- Strategy Reconfiguration Modeling for Higher Education Institutions in the Context of the Bologna DeclarationPublication . Rafael, Célia SalmimThe European Union, EU, is today an European area where citizens move freely to live and work. This new reality critically impacts almost every aspect of life in Europe. As a consequence, Education (and the employment it enables) gained a European dimension. However, the establishment of equivalences among Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), educational programmes is not a trivial task, being an obstacle to the mobility and employability of European citizens. The Bologna Declaration (BD) states the EU strategic intent in this field, namely, by providing mechanisms to establish programmes equivalence. Equivalence is built using the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The purpose of this paper is to propose a new model to support HEI strategy reconfiguration in order to comply with this new reality. This model addresses two main aspects. First, a formal model is developed to compute ECTS. Second, a set of cost (human and material) indicators is proposed. In order to ascertain the main characteristics of the model, a Programme from "Escola Superior de Tecnologia, Gestão, Arte e Design" (ESTGAD) of Caldas da Rainha is used as case study.
- Designing for diversity or designing for allPublication . Bispo, Renato; Branco, VascoThis paper is based on an ongoing reflective process on the notion of Universal Design (UD), and aims to discuss it`s specific application to product design. It forms part of PhD research being conducted at Aveiro University, Portugal, which examines the concept of UD and its potential use in industrial product development. Thus we hope to contribute towards a broader understanding of the existing rapport between mainstream industrial products research and development and human diversity, as far as physical, sensory and cognitive capacities are concerned. We present our approach to the concept of UD and the systematization of two other related concepts: Universal Use and Designing for Diversity.
- Designing out stigma : the role of objects in the construction of disabled people's identityPublication . Bispo, Renato; Branco, VascoIt is an unmistakable fact that objects hold an important role in the construction of identity, acting as markers of a certain lifestyle. In this process of symbolic construction, to own a certain object entails more often than not a high social status. However, some objects can also carry with them stigma: owning them brings about a discrediting effect in the construction of the owner`s identity. For people with disabilities the use of objects employed for mitigate their impairment (as a wheelchair or a walking aid) often act as a symbol of stigma and empathize the prejudices to the people who use them.
- Designing out stigma : the potential of contradictory symbolic imageryPublication . Bispo, Renato; Branco, VascoThis paper discusses a work-in-progress research project. Its goals are to understand how one can overcome the stigmatizing effect associated to the use of products especially designed for people with disabilities and compensate this phenomenon using contradictory symbolic imagery. The stigmatizing effect of this kind of object generates a double negative role for the people who use them: on the one hand, it becomes a visible, identifying sign that underlines social discrimination; on the other hand, it exacts upon the disabled person feelings of shame which can lead to further low self-esteem and self-exclusion. To ensure a degree of control over this signification process, we must develop solutions that respond not only the basic needs but also the disabled person expectations towards social integration and interaction. Therefore, we put forward a hypothesis of using contradictory symbols to manipulate the stigmatizing dimension of objects, by discussing a design project and an evaluation model that will allow us to assess its applicability in real life contexts.
Fradique, Teresa
- Designing out stigma : a new approach to designing for human diversityPublication . Bispo, Renato; Branco, VascoThis paper sets out to present and discuss the “Designing Out Stigma” research project which focused on understanding stigma associated with products and on the repercussions of their use on the building of self-image.
Ferraz, Francisco António Vaz Guedes Delgado; Seco, Graça Maria dos Santos Batista; Beato, Isabel Maria de Sousa Henriques; Rafael, Célia Maria da Conceição Salmim; Schön, Michael; Fernandes, Isabel BarretoOrganizations including higher education institutions need to enhance the relationships with their stakeholders, especially with their alumni, in order to promote a set of long term mutual competitive advantages. In this way, organizational sustainability is gaining new ground and plays a fundamental role as a way of attaining a broad goal in terms of sustainable development. Higher education institutions should develop relationship and transparency strategies of corporate actions in order to create trust and also to leverage synergies by using alumni networks. This can be achieved through Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), especially the web, and the most recent and globalized platforms like Facebook and Linkedin as privileged channels for communicating with alumni. In addition, the development of actions that try to promote an approach and the engagement of alumni among different initiatives not only inside the institution, but also in terms of local and/or regional context, could create added value and contribute to local tourism development. The present study aims to analyze the development of the network of a higher education institution, namely, the IPLeiri@lumni Network, assessing the platform design, the measures taken by the institution to renew the relationship with their alumni, and the resulting advantages from the paths taken by some alumni as a way of identifying the potential added value for the development of local tourism of the region.
Publication . Santos, David Rodrigues dosThis paper begins with the assertion, made by Jean Baudrillard, that the technologically mediated image has a strong predisposition to perversity. Starting with this approach, we have situated this analysis between the contact line of the artistic productions created with the aid of technology and the representations of the self through social networks. To this end, we have postulated three key concepts in which we highlight the role of the mediated image in artistic practices at the turn of the 20th century, in particular with the Fluxus movement. Secondly, we’ll discuss the underlying process of the informational aesthetics and the dialogical communication based on artworks created to operate in the communication and information network and, finally, we’ll conclude with a consideration of the importance that this interfaces grasp in shifting the way we experience the real.
