- Thermal and environmental simulation of buildingsPublication . Ramos, João António Esteves; Pitarma, Rui A.; Carvalho, Maria da GraçaThe purpose of most buildings is to provide a comfortable and healthy indoor environment for the occupants. As a result of increasing energy prices in the last decades, much effort has been done to reduce the cost arising from mechanical and natural ventilation of buildings. This often involves lowering the outdoor air intake. At the same time, many new pollution sources have been introduced in the buildings. These issues are important if we take into consideration that today the majority of the people spends more than 90% of their time indoors. In this work will be presented a physical and mathematical models to study the three-dimensional turbulent air flow patterns with thermal buoyant effects, the heat transfer, including radiation between walls, the gas contaminant trasnport and the most air transport into mechanical or natural ventilated spaces. the calculations made use of a numerical procedure, which solves the three-dimensional equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, thermal energy and air contaminant transport. The turbulence is modelled by the k-e model and thermal radiation by the discrete transfer method. To validate the mathematical model, the predictions results were compared with experimental data for two different scales - full scale office room and 1/4 laboratory scale model. A physical modelling technique, based on dimensional analysis, was used to derive the physical properties of the laboratory model, designed to provide similarity with the room. The simulation of the air contaminant distribution, the thermal and the air flow patterns in an office natural ventilated room (prototype and model) was performed.
- Aplicação de celulases e xilanases na reciclagem de fibras de papelPublication . Pala, HelenaA produção de pasta e de papel representa um dos sectores mais importantes da economia nacional. Esta posição de mercado é consequência de constantes desenvolvimentos no sector, que o tornam competitivo. Como alterações principais, devem considerar-se: a utilização de técnicas fabris eficazes, que permitem uma produção de elevada qualidade; e a implementação de sistemas de recuperação e de recirculação, que garantem o reaproveitamento de água e a reutilização de resíduos, como matéria-prima ou fonte de energia. Paralelamente, a conscencialização ambiental conduziu ao aperfeiçoamento (ou implementação) de processos despoluidores. É nesta perspectiva de inovação que se insere o presente trabalho. Pretendeu-se com os estudos efectuados, explorar a possibilidade de modificar o processo tradicional de fabrico, que recorre a tratamentos químicos e/ou mecânicos, com base em soluções ambientalmente mais favoráveis, nomeadamente a utilização de enzimas. A análise incidiu sobre as etapas de modificação das propriedades das fibras do papel (principalmente das recicladas) e de destintagem. No âmbito deste projecto teve-se por objectivo justificar as alterações de comportamento das pastas durante os processos de manipulação, nomeadamente a modificação das propriedades das fibras pelas enzimas.

- The first twenty years of the strategic management journalPublication . Phelan, Steven E.; Ferreira, Manuel; Salvador, RommelThe Strategic Management Journal (SMJ) has now entered its third decade of publication and consistently ranks among the most influential journals in management. While several authors have examined the impact of SMJ vis-a-vis other management publications, few studies have examined the internal changes in the publication over time, particularly with regard to the diversity and content of the journal. The current study finds that there has been a significant shift in the number of authors, publication lags, reference lists, and page lengths in SMJ over the past 20 years, while the diversity of authorship has stayed relatively constant. There has also been a marked rise in the proportion of empirical papers being published. The implications of these results are discussed.
