- The health impacts of poor housing conditions and thermal discomfortPublication . Vasconcelos, J.; Freire, E.; Morais, J.; Machado, J.R.; Santana, P.On summer and winter months, cardiovascular morbidity and mortality rates vary throughout Europe. For example, areas with mild winters seem to be the ones with higher number of seasonal mortality. In fact, Portugal is one of the southern countries together with Ireland that have higher mortality in winter. However, the number of studies relating cold weather with morbidity/mortality is still very rare. These occurrences are suspected to be associated with housing quality especially thermal insulation. In order to assess the relation between the incidence of coronary events and housing conditions in Portugal, a survey on inpatients with any form of acute coronary syndromes was undertaken during winter months, in order to get some data about houseability and residents behavior attitudes against cold exposure. It remained clear that poor housing conditions and/or lack of protective measures against cold exposure are common in Portugal. A better knowledge about the impact of weather and climate on health may be applied to built up a set of regulations for housing design (for new but also for old dwellings restoration); but also it is essential for the establishment of adaptation and mitigation policies and strategies, as well as on health planning and on the development of early warning systems.

- Management accounting practices in the Portuguese lodging industryPublication . Santos, Luís Lima; Gomes, Conceição; Arroteia, NunoThis paper aims to characterize management accounting techniques at the Portuguese lodging industry, identifying the techniques adopted and the determinants of adopting them and their adequacy for the decision-making process. It is also a purpose to understand the extent to which the industry adopts the Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry (USALI). The sample includes 35 hotels, which were analyzed in the years 2009 and 2010. Evidence is found supporting the fact management accounting is a tool incorporated in the daily management practices of hotels and useful to support the decision-making process. The proportion used of traditional management accounting techniques is higher than the proportion of use of contemporary ones. The adoption of these techniques is influenced by the fact of the hotels being subsidiaries of a multinational hotel chain, as well as by their annual turnover. In Portugal, there is a weak use of USALI. It is more used in the large hotels and in hotels with a foreign control. Management accounting supports hotels to improve their performance, thus becoming relevant to analyze management accounting practices used by them, particularly which instruments and techniques. In this context, this study, the first of its kind in Portugal, is justified with the increasing need for accurate and actual information of the accounting practices of the hotels operating in Portugal.

- Tourism through the gaze of stakeholders: the case of Óbidos Lagoon in PortugalPublication . Rebelo, Cátia Filipa Cerqueira; Alves, Carlos Pedro Ferreira; Moiteiro, Gilberto Coralejo; Ezequiel, Graça Maria Gomes; Brasão, Inês Paulo Cordeiro; Vasconcelos, João Viljoen de; Carvalho, Mário João Paulo de JesusCoastal lagoons are valued and sensitive ecosystems often threatened by human pressure. In our study we focused on the development of local activities in the Óbidos lagoon and we aimed to understand the stakeholders’ view about the best solutions for local development. Stakeholders were divided into residents, tourists, groups of interest and surveys and interviews were applied. The results indicated that although the lagoon is considered a dynamic economical resource for the local economy communities, tourism was identified by all stakeholders as the strategic tool for development in the lagoon. These results suggest the urgency to promote sustainable guidelines for the local tourism development.
- Evidence of social deprivation on the spatial patterns of excess winter mortalityPublication . Almendra, Ricardo; Santana, Paula; Vasconcelos, JoãoObjectives: The aims of this study are to identify the patterns of excess winter mortality (due to diseases of the circulatory system) and to analyse the association between the excess winter deaths (EWD) and socio-economic deprivation in Portugal. Methods: The number of EWD in 2002–2011 was estimated by comparing the number of deaths in winter months with the average number in non-winter months. The EWD ratio of each municipality was calculated by following the indirect standardization method and then compared with two deprivation indexes (socio-material and housing deprivation index) through ecological regression models. Results: This study found that: (1) the EWD ratio showed considerable asymmetry in its geography; (2) there are significant positive associations between the EWD ratio and both deprivation indexes; and (3) at the higher level of deprivation, housing conditions have a stronger association with EWD than socio-material conditions. Conclusions: The significant association between two deprivation dimensions (socio-material and housing deprivation) and EWDs suggests that EWD geographical pattern is influenced by deprivation.
- Learning and teaching symmetry by creating ceramic panels with Escher type tessellationsPublication . Hall, Andreia; Pais, SóniaElliot Eisner (1933-2014), a pioneer in arts education, suggested that an artistic approach to education could improve its quality and lead to a new vision for teaching and learning. This is true for any subject, including mathematics. Some topics of the mathematics school curriculum make a perfect setting for a deeper contribution of art to education and allow for a complete symbiosis between the teaching of mathematics and an artistic education. One such topic is the study of symmetry and isometry, present throughout the school mathematics curriculum from elementary to secondary levels. We believe that the learning and teaching of symmetry and isometry can be greatly facilitated by taking the role of an artist and creating works of art, eventually inspired by renowned artists. In this paper, we present some results of a professional development course for mathematics teachers where the participants created ceramic panels using the same techniques as the Dutch artist M.C. Escher did in his tessellation drawings.
- Using mathematical magic to improve student’s motivation in mathematics classesPublication . Pais, Sónia; Hall, AndreiaOne of the problems identified in the failure of mathematics teaching is the lack of motivation that students feel towards the discipline. Considering that it is imperative to make the teaching and learning processses of mathematics more stimulating, taking into account modern society and student’s interests, the authors have developed several strategies to increase the interest and improve the success of students in mathematics. Thus, they decided to use mathematical magic tricks in their classes to raise the motivation of the students, captivating them and stimulating their interest in mathematics. In this work, a case study to evaluate how mathematical magic can contribute to increase students’ motivation for learning mathematics is presented. In order to develop this experience, the techniques of inquiry, direct observation and analysis of documents were applied and the following instruments were used: questionnaires and respective analysis grids; production of a battery of tasks of a diversified nature and field notes. The analysis of the collected data allows us to conclude that the use of mathematical magic tricks in the classroom, with the purpose of motivating the students to learn mathematics, revealed to be effective.
