- Sharing of tacit knowledge in volunteer Portuguese firefighters – paths to diagnosisPublication . Oliveira, Márcio; Pinheiro, PauloPurpose - focusing on the study of tacit knowledge sharing in nonprofit organizations (NPOs) in Portugal and taking as a case study the Portuguese voluntary firefighters, we set as objectives, identify the most relevant factors for sharing tacit knowledge and identify the types of barriers most prevalent to such sharing in these organizations. Design / methodology / approach - a literature review on tacit knowledge sharing allowed the identification of indicators and barriers to the sharing of this knowledge. This was followed by a mixed methodology that combines qualitative and quantitative techniques through questionnaires and interviews, whose treatment allowed to determine the indicators that influence each of these factors and which types of barriers. Findings - Three factors have been identified that lead to the sharing of tacit knowledge within these organizations: organizational culture, individual characteristics, and organizational structure. Four typologies of barriers were identified: communicational, technological, personal and resource or infrastructure. Research limitations / implications - The present research focuses exclusively on the sharing of tacit knowledge, not considering other forms of knowledge. As a case study, although with heterogeneous organizations, the same cannot be replicated to different realities. Originality / Value - Studies in this area, targeting NPOs are scarce, as opposed to what is happening in the private and public sectors. The option of a case study of organizations such as the Portuguese fire brigades (FBs), unique in their action and identity, accompanies the need increasingly recognized by society, in enabling these organizations of competencies for the best possible performance, in the face of tragic events that have occurred in recent years in Portugal.
- Strategic management and value creation in Non-Profit OrganisationsPublication . Oliveira, Márcio; Santos, Tânia Cristina Simões de Matos dos; Gomes, Sofia; Sousa, Marlene; Lopes, João M.The present study aims to assess the impact of strategic management on value creation in Non-Profit Institutions (NPOs). The research is based on an online questionnaire applied to 67 directors of NPOs in the district of Leiria, located in the central region of Portugal, whose functions are focused on the definition and implementation of the strategic management of these institutions to fulfil their missions. This quantitative study found that the formulation and implementation of strategies directly positively impact value creation and that the formulation of strategies has an indirect positive impact, when mediated by the implementation of strategic choices, on the value creation of these same organisations. This study reinforces the theoretical argument that points to the growing importance of strategic management in this type of organisation's performance and value creation. It can also serve as a benchmark for leaders and managers to fulfil these organisations' missions. Finally, it was possible to identify a set of indicators that, in each dimension of the strategic management studied, can help create the most value.
- Regional Innovation Ecosystems: Tuning the Regional Engine’s Helix Through Smart SpecializationPublication . Lopes, João; Ferreira, João J.; Oliveira, Márcio; Farinha, Luís; Oliveira, JoséThe present research aims to contribute for the analysis of the theoretical evolution of the triple helix, quadruple helix, quintuple helix and multiple helix concepts, embracing the dynamic interaction of different stakeholders in the context of regional innovation systems. Following a preliminary literature review on the subject, it was possible to develop a systematic literature review with a bibliometric analysis of research that addressed the evolution of the triple helix until the multiple helix, into the regional innovation systems perspective. Extensive research was conducted using the Web of Science database between 1990-2018, covering a total of 378 articles, generators of 9991 citations. Four clusters were found in the literature for this field of research: R&D Collaborations and Innovation; Entrepreneurial Activity in Entrepreneurial University; Triple Helix Dynamics, and Quadruple Helix in Regional Innovation Systems. New theoretical perspectives based on bibliometric analysis and new research paths have been identified, aiming to better understand the regional interaction of stakeholders for innovation and entrepreneurship.
- The Mediating Effect of Motivation between Internal Communication and Job SatisfactionPublication . Santos, Tânia Cristina Simões de Matos dos; Santos, E.; Sousa, Marlene; Oliveira, MárcioCommunication in organisations is essential for them to be competitive in a global world that is constantly changing. Internal communication especially can be a highly effective and useful strategic tool for improving organisational performance through employee motivation and satisfac tion. Based on a questionnaire survey completed by 426 employees of Portuguese organisations, this work aims to understand, using a partial least squares structural equation model, the importance of internal communication in the motivation and satisfaction of Portuguese employees. The results show that internal communication in organisations directly influences job satisfaction and also indirectly, through motivation at work, giving motivation at work the role of mediator. It is therefore important for Portuguese organisations to invest in effective internal communication strategies in order to promote employee motivation and satisfaction, recognising motivation as a key mediator in the relationship between internal communication and job satisfaction.
- Valuation of the secretarial profession in the current organizational contextPublication . Oliveira, Márcio; Gomes, Sofia; Sousa, Marlene; Lopes, João M.; Santos, Tânia Cristina Simões de Matos dosThis research analyses the impact of tasks and competencies (personal and professional) on the valuation of the secretarial profession. The study is based on a questionnaire applied to 125 managers of Portuguese companies who perform their professional activity in a direct relationship with secretarial professionals. This research validates empirically the theoretical arguments that suggest that the importance attached to the tasks performed by secretaries has a positive impact on the valuation of the profession of secretaries, that personal and professional skills have a positive impact on the valuation of the secretarial profession and that professional skills have a positive impact on the valuation of the tasks performed by secretaries. This study reinforces the theoretical argument that points to the growing importance of the performance of these professionals and the impact that this performance brings to organisational behaviour, and the growing importance of these professionals' professional and personal competencies. The present research may serve as an indicator for leaders and managers to adjust their human resources policies and strategies, namely with regard to the promotion of strategies to promote and develop the competencies of these professionals.
- Authentic leadership in small businesses: the importance of humility and resiliencePublication . Oliveira, Márcio; Sousa, Marlene; Lopes, João M.; Santos, Tânia Cristina Simões de Matos dos; Gomes, SofiaThe main objective of this study is to analyse the impact of authentic leadership on resilience, directly or when mediated by humility, in small and medium-sized enterprises and small businesses since these are personal characteristics that are increasingly determining and differentiating. All over the world, these organisations have been feeling the need to adapt to major societal changes that are taking place at the level of economic, social, political, cultural and ethical relations. The emergence of these new societal conjunctures imposes new conditions on organisations and rebuilds the world of work and business. In this way, authentic leadership and its influence on the behaviour of employees and organisations as a whole are increasingly gaining the attention of academics. This research empirically validates the theoretical arguments that suggest that authentic leadership relates to humility and resilience, both directly and indirectly, and demonstrates that employees are essential resources to help organisations face competitive challenges, take advantage of their employees' potential, and promote organisational efficiency competitive advantages over competitors. The study is based on a questionnaire applied to 109 employees of Portuguese companies, who, in the performance of their professional activity, are in a position of direct subordinates of the top management of these SMEs and small businesses. The analysis of the results obtained allows the conclusion that authentic leaders arouse more humility and more resilience in their subordinates.
- Strategy and Human Resources Management in Non-Profit Organizations: Its Interaction with Open InnovationPublication . Oliveira, Márcio; Sousa, Marlene; Silva, Rui; Santos, Tânia Cristina Simões de Matos dosThe socioeconomic changes that many countries have been experiencing in recent decades, caused by structural factors or by specific circumstances, where the pandemic crisis of COVID-19 is only the most recent example, have posed challenges to organizations, which present themselves more and more and in various forms as threatened by the possibility of fulfilling their mission. Public and private sectors increasingly present themselves as insufficient to respond effectively to day-to-day requests. This context of instability and the resulting impacts for non-profit organizations pose serious problems to the way in which governance is exercised and served as a motivation for carrying out a study that aimed to understand the influence of strategy and human resources on the governance of these organizations. A review of the literature on the variables under study made it possible to identify the sub-dimensions associated with each one of them and the respective indicators. Thus, for a quantitative study, it was possible to apply a questionnaire to 242 Holy Houses of Mercy in Portugal to understand the direct and indirect influences of strategic management and human resources management on the governance of these institutions. The results obtained show the existence of a positive relationship between the variables under analysis, confirming that not only do these variables influence, by themselves and directly, the governance of the institutions studied, but also the strategy influences human resources policies, which in turn have implications for the way the Holy Houses of Mercy deal with aspects associated with governance. It is concluded that, in general, for these organizations to be more effective in efforts to improve their governance processes, they must focus on strategic management and human resources management instruments.
- Analyzing the root of regional innovation performance in the European territoryPublication . Lopes, João M.; Silveira, Paulo; Farinha, Luís; Oliveira, Márcio; Oliveira, JoséRegional innovation performance is an important indicator for decision-making regarding the implementation of policies intended for regional development. However, regional development policies have led economies to very different competitive positions in matters of innovation. To address these issues, this paper aims to identify the variables that most contribute to the positioning of economies in terms of performance innovation in Europe. The data for this study were collected at the Regional Innovation Scoreboard (RIS). We use a quantitative methodology, through a multivariate statistical technique (Discriminant Analysis). The results suggest that specific innovation strategies explain the competitive positioning of economies within each group of countries. It was possible to demonstrate that economies with Leader classification show greater comparative robustness in the variables “SMEs with Product or Process Innovations”, “SMEs with Product or Process Innovations”, “R&D Expenditure Public Sector” and “Population with Tertiary Education”, constituting an effective instrument of innovation policy. Furthermore, it was possible to show that the economies belonging to the Modest group do not have a competitive advantage in any of the variables under study, thus providing a reflection opportunity for policymakers at this level. The present research identifies which variables are most relevant to the classification considering the regional innovation performance in Leader, Strong, Moderate, and Modest. Several suggestions were given to companies, policy makers, and higher education institutions in the sense that the regions where they operate can improve their innovative performance, which may help to a change in their current classification.
