- Strategy and Human Resources Management in Non-Profit Organizations: Its Interaction with Open InnovationPublication . Oliveira, Márcio; Sousa, Marlene; Silva, Rui; Santos, Tânia Cristina Simões de Matos dosThe socioeconomic changes that many countries have been experiencing in recent decades, caused by structural factors or by specific circumstances, where the pandemic crisis of COVID-19 is only the most recent example, have posed challenges to organizations, which present themselves more and more and in various forms as threatened by the possibility of fulfilling their mission. Public and private sectors increasingly present themselves as insufficient to respond effectively to day-to-day requests. This context of instability and the resulting impacts for non-profit organizations pose serious problems to the way in which governance is exercised and served as a motivation for carrying out a study that aimed to understand the influence of strategy and human resources on the governance of these organizations. A review of the literature on the variables under study made it possible to identify the sub-dimensions associated with each one of them and the respective indicators. Thus, for a quantitative study, it was possible to apply a questionnaire to 242 Holy Houses of Mercy in Portugal to understand the direct and indirect influences of strategic management and human resources management on the governance of these institutions. The results obtained show the existence of a positive relationship between the variables under analysis, confirming that not only do these variables influence, by themselves and directly, the governance of the institutions studied, but also the strategy influences human resources policies, which in turn have implications for the way the Holy Houses of Mercy deal with aspects associated with governance. It is concluded that, in general, for these organizations to be more effective in efforts to improve their governance processes, they must focus on strategic management and human resources management instruments.
- Uncovering the Role of Motor Performance and Creative Thinking on Sports Creativity in Primary School-aged ChildrenPublication . Santos, Sara; Monteiro, DiogoThe demand for creativity in sports has attracted great interest, looking for factors that predict and release children’s creative behavior. Our aim was to determine the effects of motor skills and creative thinking on sports creativity, according to gender and age. 198 children (7.71 ± 1.39 years) were recruited. They completed three motor skills tests, the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking and the Creative Behavior Assessment in Teams Sports. Sprint and change of direction (COD) established to be complementary pairs since predicted all the creative thinking (CT) components. COD emerged as a reliable indicator for attempts and originality in game settings. Abstractness of titles emerged as a key component of CT on sports creativity. According to gender, sprint and COD differently predicted the outcomes; in younger ages both were more effective in predicting CT components. Our findings support an interplay between motor, thinking, and sports creativity, revealing commonalities in the underlying processes responsible for driving CT and novel behaviors in sport. Training programs enforced in motor performance and CT should be included in primary schools’ curricula and in youth sports academies, assisting sports scientists, coaches, and teachers to develop more effective enrichment environments for fostering children’s creative behavior and sports creativity.
- Taxation policies of Croatia: Proposals for implementation of preferential tax regimes on islandsPublication . Budanec, Damir; Sá, Cristina Isabel Branco deWhat causes growth and development of a Croatian island? Could preferential tax regimes be one of the solutions to the challenges of Croatian islands without leading to base erosion and profit shifting? The primary goal of this thesis was to analyse the factors that influence the growth of Croatian islands and suggest possible solutions for increasing that growth within the international scope. The literature review performed identifies the several factors influencing the growth of a Country or an Island. A multivariate regression analysis of specific factors was used to develop a parsimonious model. The results show that tax, political, demographic factors affected the GDP of a Croatian island, with certain limitations. The possible solutions for increasing growth within these factors using preferential tax regimes included decentralisation, incentives for population growth, and changes in fiscal regulations.
