- Abieta-7,13-Diene in Nematode-Infected Pinewood Pinus pinaster Branch Extracts: Isolation and the Elucidation and Characterization of Its StructurePublication . Gaspar, Marisa C.; Cruz, Pedro F.; Brito, Rui M. M.; Sousa, Hermínio C. de; Braga, Mara E. M.The oleoresin and volatile fraction produced by conifers, such as Pinus pinaster, play a crucial role in plant defence, acting as precursors to resin acids and adapting in response to environmental stress or pathogen attacks. Abietadiene (abieta-7,13-diene), the biosynthetic precursor to abietic acid, has been identified as the most abundant compound in extracts from pinewood nematode (PWN)-infected P. pinaster trees. As abietadiene is not commercially available, this study aimed to achieve, for the first time, its isolation, structure elucidation, and detailed characterization from readily available forestry residues. Abietadiene was successfully isolated using thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and its purity and identity were evaluated using multiple analytical techniques: gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). GC analysis indicated a purity of over 70% for the isolated compound, while LC provided the higher purity value of 98%. The identity of abietadiene was unequivocally confirmed through LC, FTIR, and NMR analysis. This work represents the first isolation and comprehensive characterization of abietadiene from a natural source, making detailed chemical data on this compound available to the scientific community. These findings may be used for future studies on the biological interactions and ecological roles of abietadiene, particularly in the context of plant defence and pathogen resistance.

- Acute, periprocedural and longterm antithrombotic therapy in older adultsPublication . Andreotti, Felicita; Geisler, Tobias; Collet, Jean-Philippe; Gigante, Bruna; Gorog, Diana A; Halvorsen, Sigrun; Lip, Gregory Y H; Morais, João; Navarese, Eliano Pio; Patrono, Carlo; Rocca, Bianca; Rubboli, Andrea; Sibbing, Dirk; Storey, Robert F; Verheugt, Freek W A; Vilahur, GemmaThe first international guidance on antithrombotic therapy in the elderly came from the European Society of Cardiology Working Group on Thrombosis in 2015. This same group has updated its previous report on antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs for older patients with acute or chronic coronary syndromes, atrial fibrillation, or undergoing surgery or procedures typical of the elderly (transcatheter aortic valve implantation and left atrial appendage closure). The aim is to provide a succinct but comprehensive tool for readers to understand the bases of antithrombotic therapy in older patients, despite the complexities of comorbidities, comedications and uncertain ischaemic- vs. bleeding-risk balance. Fourteen updated consensus statements integrate recent trial data and other evidence, with a focus on high bleeding risk. Guideline recommendations, when present, are highlighted, as well as gaps in evidence. Key consensus points include efforts to improve medical adherence through deprescribing and polypill use; adoption of universal risk definitions for bleeding, myocardial infarction, stroke and cause-specific death; multiple bleeding-avoidance strategies, ranging from gastroprotection with aspirin use to selection of antithrombotic-drug composition, dosing and duration tailored to multiple variables (setting, history, overall risk, age, weight, renal function, comedications, procedures) that need special consideration when managing older adults. © The Author(s) 2022. - Adolescent gender identity and sexual orientation: a school-based correlational studyPublication . Cordeiro, Ana Catarina Lobo Maurício; Da Mota, Ana João Dinis; Barros, Teresa Madalena Kraus Brincheiro Hüttel; Ramalho, Sónia; Gordo, Clementina Maria Gomes de Oliveira; Dixe, Maria dos Anjos Coelho Rodrigues; Moleiro, PascoalAdolescents are increasingly encouraged to freely express their sexuality. The purpose of this study was to compare non-cisgender adolescents with cisgender/heterosexual adolescents and those who have an undefined gender identity and/or sexual orientation, on their future prospects, emotional state, sexuality, risk behaviors, and their perception of health care and its accessibility. Adolescents who identify as non-cisgender/heterosexual seem to have higher future aspirations, however, they have a more unstable emotional state, higher risky behaviors, and fear being prejudiced by health care professionals. The undefined group appears to be undefined about their sexuality and future aspirations, while reporting less risky behaviors.
- Algorithm for transitional care for caregivers of dependent older adults: A validation studyPublication . Gomes, Thawanna Jeremias Barbosa; Ferreira, Bruna Alexandra da Silva; Baixinho, Cristina Lavareda; Ferreira, ÓscarTo construct and validate an algorithm for transitional care for caregivers of dependent older adults. Method: This was a methodological study developed in three phases: a literature review, designing an algorithm, and its validation by a peer panel with twentyseven experts selected according to pre-defined inclusion criteria. Results: The algorithm predicted interventions in transitional care (hospital stay, at discharge, and 30 days at home post-discharge) aimed at the exercise of the caregiver role; needs assessment; training in care management of dependent older adults and management of self-care, and ensuring continuity of care (of older adults and caregivers). Conclusion: Agreement between expert raters and a reliability test of 0.92 indicate that the algorithm can be used by professionals to decide the transitional care interventions to be administered to the caregivers of dependent older adults. Future studies should be conducted to perform its clinical validation.

- An in-depth introduction to arts-based spiritual healthcare: Creatively seeking and expressing purpose and meaningPublication . Laranjeira, Carlos; Querido, AnaArt therapy entails a therapeutic relationship that allows the expression and exploration of mental and spiritual needs through art (Bell, 2011). It integrates artistic creation, making use of different artistic mediators (Martins, 2013). Through various forms of artistic expression, a person communicates and explores their feelings and intimacy (Lev, 2020). Creative development allows the individual to break forms of resistance, recognize their own capabilities, and feel greater self-esteem and wellbeing (Hu et al., 2021; Ryff, 2021). Exercising creativity enables a differentiated view of oneself and favors the encounter of alternative points of view regarding psychological and spiritual issues (Alvarenga et al., 2018). The aim is personal growth and contact with our sensitive world and emotional development. In the art-therapeutic process, the artistic experience through creation enriches the imaginary and contributes to self-knowledge, driving the elaboration of internal contents and personal transformation (Martins, 2013; Ettun et al., 2014). In the art-therapeutic setting, different artistic mediators facilitate creation, expression and communication, including plastic, musical, dramatic, body, literary, and playful expression. These constitute the technical and material basis for creation. Considering the particular symbolic, expressive, and creative characteristics of different resources and understanding the therapeutic potential of each resource and how they can meet individual needs is fundamental to effective Art Therapy. - An Intervention Program to Reduce Medication-Related Problems Among Polymedicated Home-Dwelling Older Adults (OptiMed): Protocol for a Pre-Post, Multisite, Pilot, and Feasibility StudyPublication . Pereira, Filipa; Dixe, Maria dos Anjos; Pereira, Sónia Gonçalves; Meyer-Massetti, Carla; Verloo, HenkBackground: Effective medication management is one of the essential preconditions for enabling polymedicated home-dwelling older adults with multiple chronic conditions to remain at home and preserve their quality of life and autonomy. Lack of effective medication management predisposes older adults to medication-related problems (MRPs) and adverse health outcomes, which can lead to the degradation of a patient’s acute clinical condition, physical and cognitive decline, exacerbation of chronic medical conditions, and avoidable health care costs. Nonetheless, it has been shown that MRPs can be prevented or reduced by using well-coordinated, patient-centered, interprofessional primary care interventions. Objective: This study aimed to explore the feasibility and acceptability of an evidence-based, multicomponent, interprofessional intervention program supported by informal caregivers to decrease MRPs among polymedicated home-dwelling older adults with multiple chronic conditions. Methods: This quasi-experimental, pre-post, multisite pilot, and feasibility study will use an open-label design, with participants knowing the study’s objectives and relevant information, and it will take place in primary health care settings in Portugal and Switzerland. The research population will comprise 30 polymedicated, home-dwelling adults, aged ≥65 years at risk of MRPs and receiving community-based health care, along with their informal caregivers and health care professionals. Results: Before a projected full-scale study, this pilot and feasibility study will focus on recruiting and ensuring the active collaboration of its participants and on the feasibility of expanding this evidence-based, multicomponent, interprofessional intervention program throughout both study regions. This study will also be essential to projected follow-up research programs on informal caregivers’ multiple roles, enhancing their coordination tasks and their own needs. Results are expected at the end of 2024. Conclusions: Designing, establishing, and exploring the feasibility and acceptability of an intervention program to reduce the risks of MRPs among home-dwelling older adults is an underinvestigated issue. Doing so in collaboration with all the different actors involved in that population’s medication management and recording the first effects of the intervention will make this pilot and feasibility study’s findings very valuable as home care becomes an ever more common solution.
