- Advanced face mask filters based on PCL electrospun meshes dopped with antimicrobial MgO and CuO nanoparticlesPublication . Ferreira, Carolina A. M.; Guerreiro, Sara F.C.; Valente, Joana F. A.; Patrício, Tatiana M.F.; Alves, Nuno; Mateus, Artur; Dias, Juliana R.The pandemic situation caused by coronavirus clearly demonstrated the need for alternatives able to protect the respiratory tract and inactivate the infectious agents. Based on this, antibacterial face-mask filters of polycaprolactone (PCL) dopped with magnesium oxide (MgO) and copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) were produced using an electrospinning technique. A morphological analysis of electrospun meshes evaluated the success of nanoparticles’ incorporation as well as the average fibers’ diameters (481 +- 272 nm). The performance of electrospun nanofibers was also assessed in terms of tensile strength (0.88 +- 0.25 MPa), water vapor permeability (11,178.66 +- 35.78 g.m-2.day-1), stability under wet conditions and antibacterial activity according to the standard guidelines. The filters showed structural stability up to 2 h of washing and improved antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) for optimized concentrations of MgO and CuO NPs. Overall, electrospun meshes with antibacterial activity were successfully developed for advanced filtering applications.
- Occurrence and distribution of persistent organic pollutants in the liver and muscle of Atlantic blue sharks: Relevance and health risksPublication . Muñoz-Arnanz, Juan; Bartalini, Alice; Alves, Luís; Lemos, Marco F.L.; Novais, Sara C.; Jiménez, BegoñaBlue shark score among the most abundant, widely distributed and worldwide consumed elasmobranchs. In this work contents of PCBs, PCDD/Fs and PBDEs were studied by means of GC-HRMS in muscle and liver of sixty blue sharks from the North East Atlantic sampled in 2019. Concentrations relatively similar were found for PCBs and PCDD/Fs in comparison with those in Atlantic specimens from the same area sampled in 2015. In contrast, PBDE loads doubled, likely mirroring the increased environmental presence of these pollutants. This, together with the different congener profiles reported for the same species in other geographical areas, highlighted the blue shark’s potential as bioindicator of the degree and fingerprints of regional pollution by POPs. Interesting dissimilarities between muscle and liver concentrations were detected, most likely ascribed to distinct toxicokinetics involved for the different pollutants. Whereas most POPs preferentially accumulated in liver, some did the opposite in muscle. BDE-209 was the most prominent example, being almost negligible its presence in liver (0.3%) while accounting for ca. 14% of the total PBDE content in muscle. Different findings in this regard described for other shark species call for focused research to ascertain the role of the species in this apparent favored metabolization of BDE-209 in the liver. From a consumption perspective, the concentrations found in muscle -the most relevant part in the human diet-for PCBs and dioxin-like POPs were below the EU maximum allowed levels in foodstuff. Conversely, in liver about 58% and 78% of samples overpassed the European levels for tolerable intake of i-PCBs and dioxin POPs, respectively. Concentrations of PBDEs exceeded EQS (0.0085 ng/g w.w.) established by the European Water Framework Directive in 100% and 92% of liver and muscle samples, respectively, which adds to the open debate of such as a reduce value for this current EQS.
- Management accounting practices in the hospitality industry: A systematic review and critical approachPublication . Campos, Filipa; Santos, Luís Lima; Gomes, Conceição; Cardoso, LucíliaThe hospitality industry has been making a remarkable contribution to the growth of several countries’ economies. From a business perspective, the best management accounting (MA) techniques and practices are fundamental to the success of companies. However, studies in this specific area in the hotel industry are scattered in the scientific literature in different types of documents and different languages, and with an irregular distribution throughout the years (2000–2020). To fill this gap, a thorough analysis of the global performance of management accounting practices in hospitality is crucial. This study accessed theWeb of Science database in three different languages and systematized the articles to be included in this research through the PRISMA guidelines, which allowed an empirical basis for the critical approach to this topic. The greatest relevance of the study is the fact that it presents a systematic review of the literature on hotel management accounting practices, for which these results were enriched with a critical approach. The innovative character of the study focuses on evidence of the increasing implementation of some hotel management accounting practices over the years, such as some operating ratios and the USALI. In practical terms, The results of this study explain the overall performance of management accounting practices in the lodging industry and which ones are most widely used. The importance of the practices to support the decision-making of hoteliers and the challenges that they need to face in their implementation are also shown.

- Speech and Language Therapy Degree: reflections about school admission criteria in Portugal and worldwidePublication . Soares, Elsa Marta Pereira; Lima, Etelvina; Pinto, Carina; Franco, Débora; Salvador, Andreia; Lopes, Inês; Mina, Sónia Pós deThe purpose of this study is to identify the admission processes to the speech and language therapy degree worldwide and characterize how Portuguese speech and language therapists assess the candidates to the speech and language therapy degree. This is a descriptive, exploratory, and cross sectional study. This study is divided into two studies. Questionnaires were used to collect data in both studies. The data were inserted and analyzed through descriptive statistics (via Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27) and content analysis. Considering study 1, the results show that there are no school admission criteria performed by a speech and language therapist in most countries. However, in some institutions, there are some specific procedures considering the acceptance of applicants to enter the speech and language therapy degree. Study 2 reveals that Portuguese speech and language therapists use mainly informal assessment procedures when performing school admissioncriteria. The skills/areas most valued as school admission criteria for accessing the degree are writing and reading skills. Most participants consider it essential to perform the school admission criteria before candidates can access the speech and language therapy degree. There are different procedures worldwide considering the entrance in speech and language therapy degree. If school admission criteria should or should not exist is a matter of debate concerning inclusion and non discrimination policies. Even in Portugal, where school admission criteria are mandatory, there is a high variability of procedures. All these results state the importance of discussing this matter in more depth, involving all the institutions and entities that formally represent the scientific area of speech and language therapy.

- Trophic-mediated pelagic habitat structuring and partitioning by sympatric elasmobranchsPublication . Afonso, André S.; Macena, Bruno C.L.; Mourato, Bruno; Bezerra, Natalia P.A.; Mendonça, Sibele; Queiroz, Joyce D.G.R. de; Hazin, Fábio H.V.Pelagic elasmobranchs are key elements of oceanic ecosystems and must be preserved if marine trophic networks are to be kept in balance. Yet, they face intense fishing pressure that has been threatening their populations worldwide. Ensuring proper conservation management of these taxa depends on a better understanding of the strategies they use to explore the pelagic realm and their contributions to trophic web structuring across the ocean column. This study aimed at examining relationships between vertical habitat use and trophic attributes among six sympatric pelagic elasmobranchs using satellite transmitting tags in the western equatorial South Atlantic Ocean. The vertical movements of 35 elasmobranch individuals were tracked during an overall total of 1911 days. Clear relationships between species’ feeding habits, maximum diving depths, and proportion of time spent either in epipelagic or in surface waters were evidenced by Bayesian generalized linear mixed models and multivariate analysis. Filter-feeders made most use of deep waters from the mesopelagic and bathypelagic and shifted their diving depths in phase with diel vertical migrations of the deep scattering layer, i.e., shallower during the night and deeper during the day. Specialists exhibited distinct diving patterns in epipelagic and mesopelagic waters across the diel period which are potentially indicative of habitat partitioning, whereas generalists were more surface-oriented but also explored deeper waters compared to specialists. The trophic level also seemed to influence elasmobranch maximum diving depths, which tended to become shallower as species’ trophic level increased. These results corroborate previous evidence of widespread vertical habitat partitioning among sympatric pelagic predators and depict a trophicmediated structuring of the pelagic environment where top-down control may be exerted at different depths by distinct species. Further research is yet required to understand the role of elasmobranch vertical movements in structuring pelagic habitats as well as to guide ecosystem-based fisheries management aimed at reducing species susceptibility to fishing gear and at preserving the structure and functionality of marine trophic networks.
- Responsible leadership, organizational commitment, and work engagement: The mediator role of organizational identificationPublication . Gomes, Jorge F. S.; Marques, Tânia; Cabral, ConstançaAs a recent concept in leadership and organizational studies, responsible leadership is said to bring many benefits to organizations in all sectors. This statement is more theoretically grounded than empirically based, as field studies are still scarce in many sectors and industries, and even more so in nonprofit organizations. The current investigation seeks to explore the multiple relationships between responsible leadership and a number of important outcome variables in organizations, namely organization commitment and work engagement. The study further examines organizational identification as a moderating and explaining mechanism between responsible leadership and the two mentioned outcomes, in the nonprofit sector. Questionnaires from 231 employees from Portuguese nonprofit organizations were collected and analyzed with structural equation modeling, partial least squares (SEM-PLS). The results confirmed that responsible leadership is an antecedent for the three variables, and that organizational identification mediates the relationship between responsible leadership on the one hand, and organizational commitment and work engagement on the other hand. Responsible leadership provides several benefits for the understanding and management of leadership in nonprofit organizations. Thus, nonprofit organizations should be able to select, prepare, train, and develop leaders with the aim to become more responsible oriented and capable of engaging the workforce, which implies the associated need to nurture employee-relations in nonprofit organizations
