- The bond between Higher Education institutions and society: A scoping review about knowledge transfer and valorisation to promote sustainable developmentPublication . Aleixo, Ana Marta; Leal, Susana; Mano, Margarida; Azeiteiro, Ulisses MirandaThis chapter aims to identify how higher education institutions (HEIs) have operationalised the transfer of knowledge to society in terms of research, development, and innovation; the determinants of this process; and how the knowledge transfer to society contributes to local and regional development and sustainability. Herein, a scoping review was carried out to address this goal. Out of 197 retrieved articles, 30 met the inclusion criteria. These studies concentrate on the following themes: (1) determinants of the knowledge transfer process between HEIs and society; (2) the state of knowledge transfer in HEIs; (3) transfer knowledge to local and regional development; and (4) transfer of knowledge to sustainability. This study concludes that although different determinants influencing this collaboration have been identified, most studies reveal that the transfer level is still at a very early stage.

- Towards sustainable seaweed production: Optimising the culture of Gracilaria gracilisPublication . Ferreira, Francisco; Freitas, Marta; Cavaco, Mário; Mouga, TeresaGracilaria gracilis is a well-known cultivated seaweed, sought after for its high agar content. For this purpose, it is one of the most cultivated species worldwide. Depending on the biotic and abiotic conditions to which it is exposed, the species also exhibits a very interesting nutritional profile, making it an excellent candidate for use as a food or food supplement. Thus, aiming to improve the productivity and biomass quality, G. gracilis was cultivated under different light conditions and nutrient media, to evaluate the impact of these parameters on the growth rate and the chemical composition of the biomass. Thus, the nutritional profile of the biomass was evaluated. Our results indicate that environmental parameters have a significant impact both on growth and quality of the biomass, affecting the amount of protein, ash, and carbohydrate. The cultivation methods, therefore, significantly affected the quality of the biomass produced. Thus, there is scope to optimise the cultivation of G. gracilis, in order to efficiently produce high quality biomass, enhancing the effective use of resources, particularly nutrients, while producing nutritionally balanced biomass for human consumption.
- Effect of Preoperative Home-Based Exercise Training on Quality of Life After Lung Cancer Surgery: A Multicenter Randomized Controlled TrialPublication . Machado, Pedro; Pimenta, Sara; Garcia, Ana Luís; Nogueira, Tiago; Silva, Sónia; Santos, Cláudia Lares dos; Martins, Maria Vitória; Canha, André; Oliveiros, Bárbara; Martins, Raul A.; Cruz, JoanaBackground. Preoperative exercise training is recommended for improvement of clinical outcomes after lung cancer (LC) surgery. However, its efectiveness in preventing postoperative decline in quality of life (QoL) remains unknown. This study investigated the efect of preoperative home-based exercise training (PHET) on QoL after LC surgery. Methods. Patients awaiting LC resection were randomized to PHET or a control group (CG). The PHET program combined aerobic and resistance exercise, with weekly telephone supervision. Primary outcome was QoL-assessed with the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Questionnaire C30 (QLQC30) at baseline, before surgery, and 1 month after surgery. The secondary outcomes were hospital length of stay and physical performance. The main analysis included a factorial repeated-measures analysis of variance. Additionally, the proportion of patients experiencing clinical deterioration from baseline to post-surgery was assessed. Results. The study included 41 patients (68.1±9.3 years; 68.3% male) in the intention-to-treat analysis (20 PHET patients, 21 CG patients). A signifcant group × time interaction was observed for global QoL (p =0.004). Betweengroup diferences in global QoL were statistically and clinically signifcant before surgery (mean diference [MD], 13.5 points; 95% confdence interval [CI], 2.4–24.6; p =0.019) and after surgery (MD, 12.4 points; 95% CI, 1.3–23.4; p=0.029), favoring PHET. Clinical deterioration of global QoL was reported by 71.4% of the CG patients compared with 30 % of the PHET patients (p =0.003). Between-group diferences in favor of PHET were found in pain and appetite loss as well as in physical, emotional and role functions after surgery (p <0.05). Compared with CG, PHET was superior in improving preoperative fve-times sit-to-stand and postoperative exercise capacity (p <0.05). No between-group diferences in other secondary outcomes were observed. Conclusion. The study showed that PHET can efectively prevent the decline in QoL after LC surgery.
- O Direito europeu das sociedades: que futuro?Publication .
- Sulfated polysaccharides from macroalgae: A simple roadmap for chemical characterizationPublication . Martins, Alice; Alves, Celso; Silva, Joana; Pinteus, Susete; Gaspar, Helena; Pedrosa, RuiThe marine environment presents itself as a treasure chest, full of a vast diversity of organisms yet to be explored. Among these organisms, macroalgae stand out as a major source of natural products due to their nature as primary producers and relevance in the sustainability of marine ecosystems. Sulfated polysaccharides (SPs) are a group of polymers biosynthesized by macroalgae, making up part of their cell wall composition. Such compounds are characterized by the presence of sulfate groups and a great structural diversity among the different classes of macroalgae, providing interesting biotechnological and therapeutical applications. However, due to the high complexity of these macromolecules, their chemical characterization is a huge challenge, driving the use of complementary physicochemical techniques to achieve an accurate structural elucidation. This review compiles the reports (2016–2021) of state-of-the-art methodologies used in the chemical characterization of macroalgae SPs aiming to provide, in a simple way, a key tool for researchers focused on the structural elucidation of these important marine macromolecules.
- Development, characterisation, and consumer acceptance of an innovative vegan burger with seaweedPublication . Fernandes, Wilson D.; Pinto, Filipa R.; Barroso, Sónia; Gil, Maria MWhat consumers choose when purchasing food is of most importance to promote sustainability. The consumption of more sustainable foods should be stimulated, for example, by using more sustainable ingredients and by consumer education. Therefore, an innovative and highly nutritious vegan burger with seaweed (VBS) was developed using sustainable ingredients, such as pulses—grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) and chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)—and the seaweed Dulse (Palmaria palmata L.) from aquaculture. VBS was analysed for its physico-chemical and nutritional characteristics, including antioxidant activity (DPPH, TPC) and fatty acid and mineral element profiles. Shelf life and consumer acceptability were determined. The VBS was shown to be a source of protein (8.01 ± 0.14% fresh weight (FW)), fibre (5.75% FW), and mineral elements, such as P, Fe, rich in Mg, Mn, and Cu, while having low sodium content. Moreover, it presents a low sugar content. Furthermore, no antioxidant activity was detected. The pasteurised and vacuum-packed product had a shelf life of 90 days and was well accepted by consumers (64.0% acceptance). It may be concluded that an innovative VBS, nutritionally rich and with a shelf life of 90 days, was developed and well accepted by consumers, which is a good addition to a rich and diverse diet.
