- A Cross-Sectional Study on the Association between 24-h Urine Osmolality and Weight Status in Older AdultsPublication . Padrão, Patrícia; Sousa, Ana; Guerra, Rita; Álvares, Luísa; Santos, Alejandro; Borges, Nuno; Afonso, Cláudia; Amaral, Teresa; Moreira, PedroData on the association between hydration and body weight in the elderly are scarce. The objective of this work was to quantify the association between 24-h urine osmolality and weight status in the elderly. A cross-sectional study was conducted within the Nutrition UP 65 study. A quota sampling was implemented to achieve a nationally representative sample of Portuguese older adults (≥65 years) according to age, sex, education and region. From a sample size of 1500 participants, 1315 were eligible for the present analysis, 57.3% were women and 23.5% were aged ≥80 years. Participants were grouped using tertiles of 24-h urine osmolality by sex. World Health Organization cutoffs were used to classify participants according to weight status. Multinomial multivariable logistic regression models were conducted to evaluate the association of tertiles of osmolality with weight status, adjusting for confounders. Odds Ratios (OR) and respective 95% Confidence Intervals (95% CI) were calculated. Being in the 3rd urine osmolality tertile (highest) was associated with a higher risk of being obese in men, OR = 1.97, 95% CI = 1.06, 3.66. No such association was found in women. These results highlight the need for implementing studies in order to clarify the association between hydration and weight status in the elderly.

Nabais, Leonor; Maria, Joana; Pedrosa, Tomás; Sousa, AnaSmart cities are sustainable cities with people in mind, where social progress and well-being are the basis for the development of urban projects and solutions. Through the availability of Information and Communication Technologies and human capital, it is now possible to understand and improve the quality of life of citizens, thus being able to meet the needs of each individual, promoting their participation and providing a better monitoring what is happening in different cities. Therefore, it is important to verify which projects have been implemented in different cities in Portugal, which aim to achieve the principles of smart cities, in order to understand which path has already been built, and what remains to be done for make Portuguese cities smart cities. Tourism is becoming increasingly technological, so it is necessary to have the necessary tools to accompany it.
- Using an escape room activity to enhance the motivation of undergraduate life science students in mathematics classes: A case studyPublication . Pais, Sonia; Sousa, Ana; Pires, AnaMathematics is one of the school subjects where demotivation, dislike and failure are frequent concerns. To address this, it is important to actively engage students in the classroom and employ resources that make math classes more appealing and captivating, leading to meaningful learning experiences. Active, cooperative, and participative learning methods should be prioritized over traditional didactic teaching and the mere transmission of knowledge. Active learning methods offer alternative approaches to the conventional lecture format, actively involving students in the learning process. The concept of an escape room, a gaming experience where participants must solve challenges to escape from a locked room, has gained popularity in educational contexts. The educational escape room is an extension of this concept, aiming to promote real-time problem-solving, teamwork, and discovery of clues and mysteries to facilitate active learning. By engaging in various tasks within a room, students work together in teams, fostering an active learning environment. The educational escape room offers several benefits, including the enhancement of problem-solving skills, student performance, and motivation. By incorporating gamification strategies into teaching and learning processes, this approach proves to be an effective way of promoting active learning in mathematics. In this paper, we present a case study that explores the use of an educational escape room with first-year undergraduate students from a Portuguese higher education institution, with the goal of improving their mathematical problem-solving skills. The study aims to evaluate how escape rooms can contribute to increased student motivation. To assess the perception of students regarding this escape room methodology, a quantitative survey was conducted. The findings indicate that using the escape room as an educational approach effectively increased student interest and improved learning outcomes in mathematics.
- Visual analysis of the projected image of destination: The case of the visitalgarve.pt websitePublication . Sousa, Ana; Pais, SóniaThe aim of this study is to analyze the visual content of the website visitalgarve.pt, in order to verify which online image is projected. Despite the lack of consensus on a scale for measuring the image of the tourist destination, some attributes are usually determined for this analysis, such as climate, accommodation, historical and cultural, among others. The methodology used was the analysis of the visual content of the website visitalgarve.pt. For this, a sample of 1601 photographs and videos was used. The images were collected using the ImageDownloader extension. After a first selection of images, two researchers, separately, analyzed the photographs and videos and coded them into subcategories, considering their content, description, and captions. The projected image of the Algarve is based on its natural attributes, on the accommodation it provides to tourists and on the diversity of tourist attractions and less on the attributes “culture and art”, “people” and “flora and fauna”. This study identifies the visually projected strengths and weaknesses of the Algarve image. The indication of two new cognitive dimensions allows the Destination Management Organizations (DMO) to highlight the attributes that comprise them, as a differentiating and motivating factor for tourists to visit a particular destination.
