- Setting up operating indicators and ratios for independent hotelsPublication . Gomes, Conceição; Santos, Luís Lima; Malheiros, Cátia; Cardoso, PaulaHospitality managers need to optimize the decision making process. Therefore, hotel chains use operating ratios and indicators for their performance evaluation. The Uniform System of Accounts on Lodging Industry (USALI) provides a range of ratios and indicators for all hotel departments in its Part III. However, this information is prepared for hotel chains, given the fact that it is used to support information processing, standardization and comparability. Some of these ratios and indicators are used, on one hand, by public entities, and, on the other hand, to make comparisons among the hospitality performances of different countries. The Portuguese corporate structure is composed by micro and small enterprises. This fact has directed us to build a set of suitable ratios and indicators to be used on the management accounting of micro and small independent hotels, since it is possible to adapt USALI to the independent hotels. The research analyses the importance and the adaptability of USALI indicators and ratios in independent hotels. To accomplish the aim and objectives, the Portuguese case was analysed by conducting a survey to obtain data, which has then been submitted to a statistical analysis. The questionnaire was applied to hotels in the Leiria and Western regions (95 hotels) of the country. The sample was defined considering a percentage of independent hotels. It was concluded that, regarding operating indicators and ratios, the most frequently used per independent hotels are: room occupancy percentage, average daily rate (ADR), revenue per available room (RevPAR) and average occupancy per room. According to the findings, a tableau de bord was created, to be used by small and micro independent hotels.

- Pedagogical innovation through active learning practices using digital tools: a case study in tourism degreesPublication . Rafael, C.; Cardoso, P.Faced with the challenge of keeping up with the transformations of a highly complex and diverse society, higher education faculty are encouraged to rethink their traditional teaching practices, renovating them into active teaching practices that match the interests of current students and prepare them for the new world. In recent years, methodologies based on an active and cooperative learning are gaining prevalence, based on all the dynamics of organised groupwork, where students take an active role. Information and communication technologies can be applied directly to this type of teaching and learning process and play an important role in its implementation. This paper addresses the use of innovative pedagogical strategies in the generational context of digital native students, through the use of a digital tool for project management. The main purpose of this research is to understand the effect of active and collaborative pedagogical methodologies - namely Trello, a project management tool -, on productivity, collaborative work and the organisation of students’ work and projects. The specific objective is to evaluate the influence of the use of digital tools and innovative pedagogical practices applied to higher education students in the organisation of tasks. The context of the study and methodological approach is a case study, based on an exploratory approach, focused on the use of digital tools as a pedagogical strategy for higher education. To assess the use of the tool, a questionnaire was built, based on the work developed by different authors, with questions were asked regarding the use of the Trello platform as a pedagogical tool. The questionnaire was applied to first grade students of an undergraduate degree. Results of the study indicates a positive effect of the approach and the use of the tool, contributing to the motivation, involvement and sense of responsibility of students in group activities. The research allows us to conclude that the advantages of the approach help the students in organising their activities, thus contributing to increase the dynamics and productivity in elaborating projects and in the team’s task control. Finally, the study demonstrates that the collaborative tools contributes positively to the teaching and learning process, facilitating communication, material sharing, organising activities and delivery dates for assessment elements.

- Rubrics as Active Learning ToolsPublication . Cardoso, PaulaRubrics are traditionally considered as assessment tools that facilitate the learning assessment process, both for teachers and students. However, more than helping promote an assessment tool for authentic learning, it can be one of the main active learning tools. Students will not only read the assessment rubrics precreated by teachers, but they are invited to collaboratively create it, thus becoming even more engaged with their learning process right from the beginning. This idea will explain, step by step, how to successfully involve students into rubric building and reflect on their future learning, instead of only reflecting on their previous work.
- Redesigning English for Tourism Purposes (ETP) subjects during the period of emergency remote teaching: challenges and opportunitiesPublication . Pires, Ana; Cardoso, PaulaThe six undergraduate degrees offered by the School of Tourism and Maritime Technology in the scientific area of Tourism (Tourism, Tourism and Hotel Management, Marketing for Tourism, Restaurant and Catering Management, Tourism and Recreation and Event Management) have English subjects as part of their curricula. Designed under an ESP (English for Specific Purposes) framework, which privileges the needs of the learners, these subjects focus mainly on work contexts and interactions, providing practical language skills for tourism professionals. Given that contents, methodologies, and assessment are designed and planned to consider the type of language and discourse related to what the learners will need in their jobs, these subjects fall under the category of English for Tourism Purposes (ETP). Following the lockdown in March 2020, adjustments to online teaching and learning were implemented in those subjects in terms of teaching and learning methodologies, as well as in terms of assessment activities. Even though the teaching and learning contexts changed significantly, the aim of preparing students to perform specific job-related functions remained as one of the main concerns. Moving classes online was a challenging endeavor, but also created the opportunity to prepare students for their future participation in work-related online tasks. In this paper the authors describe the main adjustments made to ETP subjects and reflect on the challenges and opportunities created by the context of emergency remote teaching.
- Emergency remote teaching: challenges and opportunities in foreign languages applied to tourismPublication . Cardoso, Paula; Pires, AnaThe current paper intends to identify and analyse the challenges that both students and faculty have experienced during the process of moving online and that need to be turned into opportunities, in order to avoid replicating traditional teaching in an online environment. They are numerous and at several different levels. On one hand, students have experienced challenges such as time management, support and follow-up, communication and motivation, among others. On their turn, faculty have had difficulties in adapting the resources and, consequently, in mastering the necessary tools and skills, as well as the most suitable pedagogical strategies. On the other hand, assessment may represent a challenge on its own, both for students and faculty. By looking at the example of a Curricular unit of Foreign Languages applied to Tourism, the paper also aims to point out that the main opportunity lies in planning online teaching and learning activities as a conversational process between three axes: learning goals, learning strategies and assessment.
