  • Exploring the Relationship Between Wall Drop Punt Kick and Catch (Tripela Sports) Performance and Manipulative Tests of the Motor Competence Assessment Battery in Early Adolescents
Publication . Matos, Rui; Amaro, Nuno; Lopes, Nataniel; Costa, Pedro; Jacinto, Miguel; Rodrigues, Filipe; Antunes, Raul; Coelho, Luís; Ibáñez, Sergio J.; Estevan, Isaac; Monteiro, Diogo
Our aim in this study was to analyze associations between the two manipulative tests of the Motor Competence Assessment (MCA) battery and the Wall Drop Punt Kick & Catch (WDPK&C) motor task. One hundred and twelve early adolescents (60 boys; 52 girls; M age = 12.67, SD = 1.78 years) participated. Overall, strong correlations were found between the WDPK&C and the MCA manipulative tests, either separately (r = .802 for kicking, r = .762 for throwing) or collectively (r = .835). In boys, correlations between WDPK&C and MCA kicking (r = .722) and MCA throwing (r = .754) were similar. In girls, MCA kicking was more closely related to WDPK&C performance (r = .612) than MCA throwing (r = .330). These results reinforce the possible use of WDPK&C as a gross manipulative coordination test, either by itself or when integrated into motor competence batteries.
  • Physiological and mechanical loads in Portuguese sub-elite football refereeing: a preliminary study
Publication . Rebelo-Goncalves, Ricardo; Pardal, Hélder; Coelho, Luís; Antunes, Raul; Amaro, Nuno
This study aimed to examine the variation in physiological and mechanical load in a sub-elite refereeing team, considering the different parts of the match and their role (field referee vs. assistant referees). One field referee (32.57 years) and two assistant referees (31.05 years) were monitored during 4 matches of the Portuguese championship throughout the 2018-2019 season (senior age category, or adult), using the ZephyrTM BioHarness. The following variables were considered for analysis: skin temperature, respiratory rate (RR), heart rate (HR), percentage of maximum heart rate (%HRmax), posture, activity, and peak acceleration (ACCpeak). The impulse load, expressed as N∙s, was also calculated. No physiological and mechanical differences were observed according to match half, considering the refereeing team members. Significant differences were verified between field referee and assistant referees in the 1st half and the 2nd half and for total match-play: on average, the field referee had higher values for skin temperature (p = 0.016; r = -0.759), HR (p = 0.017; r = -0.757), %HRmax (p = 0.017; r = -0.757), activity (p = 0.017; r = -0.757), and ACCpeak (p = 0.017; r = -0.757). Curiously, no differences were found for impulse load between the field referee and the assistant referees. The football referee's activity profile is both physiologically and mechanically demanding, even at a sub-elite level. Differences between field referee and assistants must be considered in refereeing fitness and conditioning training programs to cope with physical demands of a football match.
  • Seniors Road Safety Enhancement through Perceptual-Motor Competences Training Program Impact upon the Performance on the Useful Field of Vision (UFOV)
Publication . Matos, Rui; Varregoso, Isabel; Comprido, Ana; Coelho, Luís; Morouço, Pedro; Amaro, Nuno; Barroso, Marisa
The purpose of this study was to verify the efficacy of a PerceptualMotor Competences Training Program upon the performance on UFOV of an experimental active group of elderly drivers. Program tasks were conceived to force subjects to divide their attention for central and peripheral stimuli, using a visual strategy of gazing at an anchor-point and, from there, detect important clues on peripheral visual field. For this purpose, almost all tasks were performed on groups of two, being one responsible for testing the other and switching functions from time to time (for instance, dropping one of two juggling handkerchiefs hold apart, one in each tester hand, with the partner having to detect which was dropped and react as quick as possible, catching it before it felt to the floor). We found a significant improvement in the capacity of dividing attention for central and peripheral stimuli under a visual environment full of distractors (selective attention UFOV test) following the Program, as well as a significant reduction on the category of risk (component based upon the three UFOV subtests results), which evidence very clearly the benefits of this training program on the elderly experimental group and its potential to reduce their risk of being involved in car accidents, on their fault, due to perceptual reasons.
  • The effects of a 24-week exercise intervention and detraining on individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Publication . Jacinto, Miguel; Monteiro, Diogo; Coelho, Luís; Diz, Susana; Matos, Rui; Amaro, Nuno; Antunes, Raul
Objetive Regular physical exercise can promote physical fitness, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, increase independence and success in daily activities, and promote quality of life for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). On the one hand, if this exercise practice is discontinued or interrupted, the associated beneficial effects can be lost. This study aimed to examine possible changes in body composition and physical and functional fitness variables after regular practice of a physical exercise program, as well as after the same period of detraining. Materials and Methods This study followed a quasi-experimental methodology of 6 months of physical exercise, followed by 6 months of interruption. The sample consisted of 10 individuals with IDD, with an average age of 43.2 years (SD = 9.47). Weight, body mass index, handgrip, Timed Up and Go and Sit to Stand were assessed at initial intervention, post-intervention, and follow-up. Results Participants improved in all variables after the intervention program, but only significantly in the handgrip test (Bonferroni corrected: t = 1.05; p = 0.019; W = 0.21). After 6 months without regular exercise, the participants showed a decline in physical and functional fitness variables, but only in handgrip significantly (p = 0.044). Conclusions Although there are some gains from physical exercise program, there seems to be a loss of these gains after the end of the program. It is therefore recommended to avoid the period of detraining, which is fundamental to promoting the benefits of exercise, healthy ageing, independence, success in carrying out activities of daily living and quality of life.
  • Self-Refereeing System in Ultimate during the Joint Junior Ultimate Championship in Three Different Divisions A Different Way to Promote Fair-Play?
Publication . Amoroso, José Pedro; Coelho, Luís Pedro Inácio; Papp, Henrietta; Costa, Felipe; Christodoulides, Efstathios; Cools, Wouter; Erdosi, Zoltán; Moore Jr., James E.; Furtado, Guilherme Eustáquio
In ultimate games governed by the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF), all competitors also take on the role of referee. The players discuss disputed calls with each other during the game, and then follow rules designed for these situations to determine how the play continues. The number one rule of the sport is to respect the spirit of the game (SOTG), which encourages competitive play while preserving mutual respect and minimizing the risk of injury. The use of SOTG in ultimate in the framework of self-arbitration as a moral practice aligns well with other tools of critical pedagogy. For this study, the SOTG scores of the WFDF Joint Junior Ultimate Championship (JJUC 2022) were analyzed. A total of 1009 players from 19 countries competed in 434 self-refereed games (29 national teams in the WJUC Under-20 (U20) tournament and 20 teams in the EYUC Under-17 (U17) tournament). All the scores from the individual criteria correlated well with the overall scores, but for the most part, they did not correlate with each other. Our experience with the scoring system has highlighted the importance of participants understanding the meaning of the results and how they may lead to a constructive reflection to improve exceptions, including scores representing fouls and rules knowledge. The findings provide important information for physical education teachers, coaches, and sport consultants and may be of use to design SOTG programs that could foster the experience of sportsmanship and to facilitate the ethical conduct of athletes in either recreative or in competitive contexts.

  • Effects of strength and conditioning programs in strength and dynamic balance in older adults
Publication . Salvador, Rogério; Coelho, Luís; Matos, Rui; Cruz, João R.; Rebelo-Goncalves, Ricardo; Amaro, Nuno
To independently accomplish their daily routines with no need of assistance, older adults require an optimal physical fitness. In fact, this lack of physical fitness may reduce older individuals’ quality of life, leading to dependence on personal daily assistance or even to becoming significantly more prone to fatal falls [1]. Prevention through physical activity programs, are used to slow down and delay these aging effects, by improving individuals’ agility, flexibility and body improved functionality. Most of these programs take place in in-water environment due to age limiting factors such as high-risk osteoporosis, reduced mobility, higher risk of fracture from falls, arthrosis and spinal disorders among other.
