- Complexity Analysis of a Business Process Automation: Case Study on a Healthcare OrganizationPublication . Martinho, Ricardo; Rijo, Rui, Rui Pedro Charters Lopes; Nunes, AnaHealthcare organizations have been struggling to get Business Process Management (BPM) and associated Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) properly aligned to improve their patients' service and quality of care. Nevertheless, the highly structured nature of larger organizations such as hospitals hampers this alignment, and commonly ICT is applied to isolated tasks or fragments of processes. In this paper, we present and discuss the results, in terms of complexity, of the introduction of a new scheduling system within the medical appointment and exam business processes of a large hospital. During the case study, we began by modelling the processes using the Business Process Modelling and Notation (BPMN) standard. We then used abstract metrics to compare the complexity between old (before the introduction of the scheduling system) and new processes, and interpreted the obtained results. Finally, we derived important conclusions that will help guide us in further business process optimization endeavors.

- DOTS: Drift Oriented Tool SystemPublication . Antunes, Mário; Costa, Joana; Silva, Catarina; Bernardete RibeiroDrift is a given in most machine learning applications. The idea that models must accommodate for changes, and thus be dynamic, is ubiquitous. Current challenges include temporal data streams, drift and non-stationary scenarios, often with text data, whether in social networks or in business systems. There are multiple drift patterns types: concepts that appear and disappear suddenly, recurrently, or even gradually or incrementally. Researchers strive to propose and test algorithms and techniques to deal with drift in text classification, but it is difficult to find adequate benchmarks in such dynamic environments. In this paper we present DOTS, Drift Oriented Tool System, a framework that allows for the definition and generation of text-based datasets where drift characteristics can be thoroughly defined, implemented and tested. The usefulness of DOTS is presented using a Twitter stream case study. DOTS is used to define datasets and test the effectiveness of using different document representation in a Twitter scenario. Results show the potential of DOTS in machine learning research.
- eServices - Service Platform for Pervasive Elderly CarePublication . Marcelino, Isabel; Laza, Rosalía; Domingues, Patrício; Gómez-Meire, Silvana; Pereira, AntónioIn this paper, we present a solution to improve elderly’s quality of life. eServices – Service platform for pervasive elderly care was designed to aggregate several services developed to meet senior population’s needs. It monitors basic life signs, environment variables and uses personal location technology. Besides sensor services, eServices solution contains digital services align with emotional and social care needs. Due to target population specifications, eServices was designed to be as simple and accessible as possible in order to remove technological barriers. One of eServices major features is to detect imminent danger situations, act accordingly. It also collects the data from the sensors, location routines and from the interactions between the elderlies and the provided services to detect behavior deviations in order to act preventively. The platform was tested by seniors in real scenario. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed platform was well accepted and easy to use by seniors, which demonstrated enthusiasm and interest in daily bases use.
- A hybrid multi-objective GRASP+SA algorithm with incorporation of preferencesPublication . Oliveira, Eunice; Antunes, Carlos Henggeler; Gomes, ÁlvaroA hybrid multi-objective approach based on GRASP (Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure) and SA (Simulated Annealing) meta-heuristics is proposed to provide decision support in a direct load control problem in electricity distribution networks. The main contributions of this paper are new techniques for the incorporation of preferences in these meta-heuristics and their hybridization. Preferences are included in the construction phase of multi-objective GRASP, in SA, as well as in the selection of solutions that go to the next generation, with the aim to obtain solutions more in accordance with the preferences elicited from a decision maker. The incorporation of preferences is made operational using the principles of the ELECTRE TRI method, which is based on the exploitation of an outranking relation in the framework of the sorting problem.
- Point Cloud Alignment for Deposited Material Assessment in Tunnel EnvironmentsPublication . Teixeira, Abel; Costelha, Hugo; Neves, Carlos; Bento, Luis CondeThe assessment of deposited material in tunnel reinforcement operations can be performed using a 3D model generated from multiple scans. For this purpose, an accurate alignment of the scanned models is required. Aligning existing structure model with data scanned after surface deformations can be challenging, particularly if reference markers are not available or were displaced. For scenarios where the surrounding structure is largely changed, certain procedures can be adapted when processing the scanned data to achieve consistent alignment between scanned and reference structure models. This work proposes a methodology to cope with these situations, analysing the impact of different approaches. Experiments were performed in a realistic scenario related with shotcrete of railway tunnels wall surfaces, with the results showing the applicability of the developed work. The proposed procedure relies in highlighting the importance of specific points that describe the same feature in the reference and aligning PC. The proposed methodology achieved an RMS difference of 0.0173 m, which lead to a drastic improvement in the point cloud alignment compared to the use of standard ICP algorithm without data preprocessing, which achieved 0.0518 m in the studied use-case.
- A review on Robot-Assisted Additive Manufacturing Systems and TechnologiesPublication . Cavalcanti, M.; Costelha, Hugo; Neves, CarlosAbstract. The general use of robot manipulators in the Additive Manufacturing (AM) world could cause a paradigm shift on how these technologies are used today. Adding more degrees of freedom to the AM systems decreases the limita tions of current mainstream additive technologies, such as restricted build volume, high manufacturing times, and the use of support structures. However, existing traditional techniques for slicing 3D models and path planning generation do not translate smoothly into the requirements and constraints of robot manipulator systems. This paper presents a state-of-the-art review on the current systems and technologies, as well as advantages and challenges on the use of robot manipulators in AM, focusing on extrusion-based processes.
- Survey of SLAM Algorithms with ROS SupportPublication . Teixeira, Abel; Costelha, Hugo; Bento, Luis Conde; Neves, CarlosSimultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms are a key component in enabling autonomous navigation for robotic systems. This study presents a comprehensive assessment of state-of-the-art SLAM algorithms, focusing exclusively on those with Robot Operating System (ROS) support. The study aims to provide insights into the computational performance of these algorithms by leveraging the benchmark results reported in their respective studies. Each algorithm's performance metrics, as reported in their benchmark studies, are analyzed and compared. This compara-ive analysis not only highlights the strengths and weaknesses of individual algorithms but also provides a broader understanding of their applicability across diverse robotic platforms and environments. Overall, this study contributes to the advancement of SLAM research by offering a comparative evaluation tailored to ROS-supported algorithms. The findings serve as a valuable resource to make informed decisions regarding the selection and implementation of SLAM solutions in real-world applications.
- Trajectory Generation for Robotic Additive Manufacturing: A Comparative StudyPublication . Cavalcanti, Marcella; Costelha, Hugo; Neves, CarlosThe integration of robot manipulators into additive manufacturing processes, particularly in fused filament fabrication, presents opportunities to overcome limitations of traditional three-axis systems. By leveraging the additional degrees of freedom, more versatile and efficient manufacturing solutions can be developed. However, this increased complexity introduces new challenges, including the need for trajectory planning that accounts for reachability, singularities, collision avoidance, and material deposition in various build orientations. This study focuses on the development and evaluation of trajectory generation approaches for robotic FFF using an ABB CRB 15000 manipulator. All approaches began with the same G-code input, and tests were conducted both in simulation and on the real robot. The results were analyzed in terms of trajectory accuracy, joint speed and acceleration profiles, parameters influence, and the Quality of the printed parts.
- Use of Web Based Meters to Improve Energy Efficiency and Power Quality in BuildingsPublication . Moreira, Licínio; Leitão, Sérgio; Vale, Zita; Galvão, JoãoDuring the work conducted, several buildings were analysed, in terms of energy efficiency and power quality. Two case studies are here presented: an educational building and a museum. Most of the studies were conducted recurring to traditional measurement equipment, forcing the person to travel to the site to install equipment and every time he wanted to collect data. But one of the case studies, the museum, comprised the development of an analyser (hardware and software) able to measure electric energy, temperature and humidity. This analyser has the capability to register values on a database available in the internet and issue warnings to the building manager. This allows real-time information, supporting some energy efficiency actions. The objective is to improve this model and expand its use for several buildings, providing savings in terms of time and other resources, taking advantage of cloud-based systems.
