- A bibliometric study of the cultural models in international business researchPublication . Reis, Nuno; Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Santos, João Carvalho; Serra, Fernando RibeiroCulture and the influence of national cultures and cultural differences have been widely studied in International Business (IB) research especially over the past three decades. To better understand what culture actually means and its implications on firms’ international operations, several cultural models and taxonomies have been put forward. In this paper we review the main cultural models in the extant IB research – Hofstede’s (1980), Hall’s (1976) and Troompenaars’ (1993) – and Kogut and Singh’s (1988) concept of cultural distance. In a bibliometric study of over 3,600 articles published in seven top ranked journals for IB research, we examine citations and co-citations to assess the relative use of the cultural models and the ties binding authors and theories studied. This study offers a wealth of information on the current state of IB-related research using culture that may be used to better understand the intellectual structure of the sub-field of cultural issues in IB studies but also to identify gaps for future inquiry. The results help setting a profile of the network of knowledge and permit us to conclude that Hofstede’s (1980) taxonomy on cultural characteristics is the most cited cultural taxonomy and holds ties to many of the core streams of IB-related research. In fact, despite the well-known criticisms, there is an increasing use of Hofstede’s dimensions.
- A bibliometric study of the Resource-Based View (RBV) in International Business Research using Barney (1991) as a key markerPublication . Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Serra, Fernando Ribeiro; Costa, Benny Kramer; Almeida, MartinhoIn this study we examine how the RBV has been included in IB research over the past twenty years using Barney’s (1991) article as a key marker. Bibliometric techniques analyzing citations, co-citations and research themes delved into, were applied to the articles published between 1991 and 2010 in five leading IB journals. Data was collected from the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). We conclude that the RBV has been having an important impact on most of IB research themes and has been driving a large portion of current thought on the multinational corporations’ strategies, location choices and internationalization. Although, we also find areas that have been explored to much lesser extent. In addition to identify the stock of accumulated knowledge, this study contributes to highlight areas for future inquiry on how IB studies may further benefit from an RBV-oriented perspective.
- A bibliometric study on culture research in international businessPublication . Pinto, Cláudia Frias; Serra, Fernando Ribeiro; Ferreira, Manuel PortugalNational cultures and cultural differences provide a crucial component of the international business (IB) research context. We conducted a bibliometric study of articles published in seven leading IB journals over a period of three decades to analyze how national culture has been impacting IB research. Co-citation mappings permit us to identify the ties binding works dealing with culture and cultural issues in IB. We identify two main clusters of research, each comprising two sub-clusters, with Hofstede’s (1980) work delineating much of the conceptual and empirical approach to culture-related studies. One main cluster entails works on the conceptualization of culture and its dimensions and the other cluster focuses on cultural distance. This conceptual framework captures the extant IB research incorporating culture-related concepts and influences.
- Composition of small and large firms' business networks in transition economiesPublication . Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Li, Dan; Serra, Fernando Ribeiro; Armagan, SunguIn this study, using firm level data from twenty six transition economies collected by the World Bank and the EBRD in 1999-2000, we conduct a set of logistic regression models to investigate the composition of small and large firms’ business networks. The results show that, in contrast to smaller firms, larger firms are more likely to have formal business relationships, and relationships with national and foreign financial institutions, government, and foreign firms. In addition, in a subgroup analysis of seven transition economies we show that the composition of the firms’ business networks varies substantially across countries but that the government is still a dominant client. Furthermore, we found a large variation on firms’ reliance on informal ties and the extent to which firms exchange with foreign firms.
- Composition of small and large firms' business networks in transition economiesPublication . Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Li, Dan; Serra, Fernando RibeiroRecent research has theorized on the composition of firms' business networks but has not empirically examined business networks in transition economies may vary for different firms. - Cross-border acquisitions of foreign firms in Portugal and of portuguese firms abroad: exploration and exploitation through acquisitionsPublication . Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Li, Sali; Lopes, Márcio Continentino; Serra, Fernando RibeiroIn this paper we examine the cross-border acquisitions in Portugal in the period from 1990 to 2002. We characterize the foreign acquisitions in Portugal and the portuguese firms' acquisitions abroad focusing on the countries of origin and target industries. We discuss the observed patterns of acquisition activity in the context of firms' knowledge and internationalization strategies. In particular, we focus on the potential for knowledge access and organizational learning emerging from cross-border acquisitions, and the extent to which the potential knowledge strategy is adjusted with the structural form of the acquisitions. We conclude that most cross-border acquisitions involving portuguese firms, as targets or acquirers, are driven by a market seeking strategy and the exploitation of resources and capabilities held, rather than by a strategic asset-seeking strategy and the exploration of new sources of knowledge.
