- A bibliometric study on culture research in international businessPublication . Pinto, Cláudia Frias; Serra, Fernando Ribeiro; Ferreira, Manuel PortugalNational cultures and cultural differences provide a crucial component of the international business (IB) research context. We conducted a bibliometric study of articles published in seven leading IB journals over a period of three decades to analyze how national culture has been impacting IB research. Co-citation mappings permit us to identify the ties binding works dealing with culture and cultural issues in IB. We identify two main clusters of research, each comprising two sub-clusters, with Hofstede’s (1980) work delineating much of the conceptual and empirical approach to culture-related studies. One main cluster entails works on the conceptualization of culture and its dimensions and the other cluster focuses on cultural distance. This conceptual framework captures the extant IB research incorporating culture-related concepts and influences.
- Culture and Hofstede (1980) in international business studies: a bibliometric study in top management journalsPublication . Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Serra, Fernando Antonio Ribeiro; Pinto, Cláudia Sofia FriasHow countries differ in their fundamental cultural traits and how these differences impact firms and businesses has been a recurring topic in international business research. Geert Hofstede’s (1980) work on culture and the cultural dimensions has had high impact on research carried out in international business studies and has been used in a wider array of business/management disciplines to delve into a large variety of phenomena. In this study, we conduct a bibliometric analysis of the articles published in eight top ranked business journals that quoted Hofstede’s work, over a period of thirty years. Hofstede’s work is used as a key marker for culture. In a sample of 655 articles, we conducted citation and co-citation analyses to better understand the ties binding scholars, theories and ideas. Moreover, a longitudinal analysis of both cocitation and research topics allow us to observe and better understand how much does Hofstede – and culture – matter in international business studies and how research emphasis has changed over time. For instance, we noted how the emphasis of research has shifted from methodological concerns to help explaining, contextualizing why firms made the choices they did, and how operations ought to be managed. We discuss broadly the results, pointing some implications, especially for theory and scholars.
- Assessing the influence of uncertainty in land cover mapping and digital elevation models on flood risk mappingPublication . Gonçalves, Luísa M.S.; Fonte, Cidália C.; Gomes, RicardoThis paper proposes an approach to assess the influence of the uncertainty present in the parameters dependent on the land cover and elevation data over the peak flow values and the subsequent delineation of flooded areas. The proposed approach was applied to produce vulnerability and risk maps that integrate uncertainty for the urban area of Leiria, Portugal. A SPOT-4 satellite image and DEMs of the region were used. The peak flow was computed using the Soil Conservation Service method and HECHMS, HEC-RAS, Matlab and ArcGIS software programs were used. The analysis of the results obtained for the presented case study enables the identification of the order of magnitude of uncertainty associated to the watershed peak flow value and the identification of the areas which are more susceptible to flood risk to be identified.
- WaterNetGen Helps C-TownPublication . Sousa, J.; Muranho, J.; Marques, A. Sá; Gomes, R.The methodology proposed to solve the C-Town water distribution network problem (BBLAWN) comprises two optimization models: a least cost design model to identify the pipes to be replaced and size them; and an optimal operation model to define the pump controls and the PRV settings. Both models are solved by linking a hydraulic simulation model (WaterNetGen, a pressure driven EPANET extension) with a simulated annealing algorithm. This methodology, supported by some additional engineering expertise, provided a set of good solutions in terms of capital cost, and a good commitment with the environmental and financial damage caused by water losses.
- Indoor air quality audit in two office buildings in PortugalPublication . Ramos, Joao; Pinto, FernandoThe indoor air quality that a building presents is not always from our knowledge. In fact, we may find ourselves exposed to an indoor air which can be harmful to human health, affecting the quality of life and productivity, which also will have economic repercussions at this level. Given the Portuguese law for energy and indoor air quality (IAQ) certification of large service buildings, the indoor air quality requirements were here presented and, in addition, this paper provides an overview of the current Portuguese IAQ technical procedures to audit existent buildings. It was also intended with this study to evaluate the indoor air quality experienced by the occupants of two office buildings, an old and a recent, with the same activity and occupancy, without air-conditioning systems, where were carried out indoor air quality characterizations and, in particular, have been assessed the CO2 concentration and the typical renewal air exchange rates in different zones of the buildings, as a ventilation effectiveness monitoring. During the building's regular occupancy period, the authors have been done monitoring campaigns, which took place in winter and summer seasons. They have been detected that the values of some parameters under review were non-compliance situations in winter, in contrast with the summer due to the increase of ventilation promoted by the occupants taking advantage of the favourable conditions of the Mediterranean weather. Consequently, the proposed IAQ audit approach may be helpful to characterize indoor air pollutants, to evaluate the ventilation effectiveness and to correlate it with the indoor air quality perception and self-control actions of the occupants.
- Probabilistic Analysis of High Strength Concrete Girders Strengthened with CFRPPublication . Gomes, S.; Neves, L.; Dias-da-Costa, D.; Júlio, E.; Fernandes, PauloThe strengthening or upgrading of reinforced concrete girders with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites has become a common procedure in the last years. However, the lack of standards or codes proposed within the same design philosophy of the Eurocode, and which are capable of assuring an adequate confidence level for the CFRP as for steel or concrete, often implies that the safety of prestressed girders strengthened with CFRP has to be evaluated using probabilistic tools. This manuscript presents a reliability study of a Portuguese prestressed high strength concrete (HSC) girder strengthened with CFRP. The selected bridge is representative of what has been constructed in Portuguese highways during the last two decades. First, the reliability level and the importance of design and load variables are computed using the following two codes: Portuguese RSA (1983) and European EC1 (2002). Next, partial safety factors are determined for the CFRP. © 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.
- Reconstruction and generation of virtual heritage sitesPublication . Rodrigues, Nuno; Magalhães, L.; Moura, J.; Chalmers, A.Traditionally procedural modelling techniques are commonly used to generate new structures and are presently established in several areas such as video games and computer animated movies. However they may also be used in heritage applications to efficiently produce models of non-existing worlds for which there is some kind of knowledge (e.g. floor plans, photographs) to support the reconstruction of realistic environments. Similarly they may also be used to support the generation of distinct possibilities that allow experts to draw some conclusions or conceive different hypotheses about lost worlds. The present paper shows the benefits and constraints that may arise from the use of such techniques in virtual heritage applications. Furthermore, a whole method is proposed, for the reconstruction and generation of virtual heritage traversable house models, provided through the means of a grammar, demonstrated with the reconstruction and generation of several Roman houses from the heritage site of Conimbriga, Portugal.
