- 5-years after-Life Berlengas: Conservation efforts and monitoring in Berlengas Archipelago (2019-2024). Project LIFE Berlengas. SPEA - Portuguese Society for the Study of BirdsPublication . Neste relatório são apresentadas as tarefas realizadas durante 2019-2024, nomeadamente, monitorização e conservação de aves marinhas, biossegurança, controlo de plantas invasoras e monitorização da flora. Os resultados alcançados em termos de investigação, voluntariado, apoio, visitação e ações de sensibilização são também apresentados. A informação recolhida anteriormente ao pós-LIFE foi compilada de forma a apresentar todas as séries temporais disponíveis. Em termos de aves marinhas reprodutoras, foram monitorizados os tamanhos populacionais, a produtividade, as taxas de sobrevivência individual, seguimento individual, a ocupação dos ninhos artificiais e outras atividades de conservação. As espécies-alvo foram o roque-de-castro Hydrobates castro, a cagarra Calonectris borealis, a galheta Gulosus aristotelis, a gaivota-d'asa-escura Larus fuscus, a gaivota-de-patas amarelas Larus michahellis e o airo Uria aalge. Foram testadas medidas de mitigação para reduzir a captura acidental de aves marinhas e a interação com as pesca durante 229 dias de pesca. As aves terrestres reprodutoras e migradoras foram monitorizadas através de sessões de anilhagem e observações no terreno. Das 72 espécies observadas nas ilhas, foram anilhadas 20 espécies distintas. As medidas de biossegurança foram monitorizadas ao longo de cada ano na ilha da Berlenga. Não foram detetados sinais de roedores nas armadilhas A24 ©GoodNature nem nas caixas-rateiras. Apesar dos cinco alertas da potencial presença de roedores emitidos. As Berlengas continuam livres de roedores. No entanto foi feita a observação de fezes frescas de coelho-bravo Oryctolagus cuniculus em maio de 2024. Anualmente em abril, a vegetação foi monitorizada através de 75 quadrados de 2x2m. A cobertura e diversidade da vegetação aumentou ao longo dos anos, com 2024 a atingir o maior número de espécies registadas - 80. Foi monitorizada uma área de exclusão de gaivota-de-patas-amarelas durante a primavera. Foram observadas diferenças significativas entre as subáreas, com maiores abundâncias de Armeria berlengensis na subárea de exclusão, quando comparada com a área de não exclusão. Os novos rebentos de chorão Carpobrotus edulis foram removidos das áreas intervencionadas no âmbito do LIFE Berlengas, o que resultou num esforço anual de monitorização de 466 pessoas*hora. Desde 2019, foram publicados 16 artigos em revistas científicas. Entre 2019 e 2024, 71 voluntários estiveram envolvidos nos trabalhos das Berlengas. A SPEA implementou 4 projetos para assegurar as tarefas do Pós-LIFE. A visitação na ilha da Berlenga foi monitorizada anualmente. As melhorias que decorreram incluíram a implementação da Capacidade de Carga Humana e a plataforma de acesso à ilha da Berlenga. A câmara "ninho ao vivo" esteve ativa ao longo de todo o período, transmitindo imagens em tempo real a partir de um ninho de cagarra e de um ninho de roque-de-castro, em alternado. Foram desenvolvidas diversas ações para sensibilização e de educação ambiental pela SPEA e ICNF. Tais atividades tiveram como público-alvo os visitantes da ilha da Berlenga, os pescadores de Peniche, grupos internacionais, operadores marítimo-turísticos, professores e alunos das escolas locais.

- Antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of selected red seaweeds from Central PortugalPublication . Freitas, Marta V.; Inácio, Leonardo G.; Ruas, Ana; Silva, Isabela A.; Mouga, Teresa; Pereira, Leonel; Afonso, CléliaThroughout the ages, macroalgae have provided humankind with elements beneficial to human health, and often with bioactive abilities. Yet, while today we fully acknowledge such potential, especially that of the most widely known species, an even greater number of species remain unaknowledged. This holds particularly true for the highly diverse phylum Rhodophyta (red seaweeds) and, therefore, the present study aims to unveil the antioxidant and the antimicrobial potential of twelve red seaweed species collected in central Portugal. Results obtained from the antioxidant assays ABTS and TPC highlighted the high scavenging capacity of the coralline algae Corallina officinalis, Ellisolandia elongata and Amphiroa rigida, and the high phenolic content of Porphyra umbilicalis, whereas the antimicrobial analyses through MIC determination emphasized the activities of Sphaerococcus coronopifolius and Mesophyllum lichenoides against, respectively, Bacillus subtilis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This study raised awareness of the bioactive potential waiting to be discovered regarding less known Rhodophyta species, such as Amphiroa rigida and Mesophyllum lichenoides. Therefore, we believe this study provides extra steps in pinpointing Rhodophyta species with bioactive potential, encouraging further studies tailored toward a biotechnological perspective, and, ultimately, influencing current perspectives regarding the exploration of seaweeds.
- Aprendizagem ativa aplicada às aulas teóricas da UC de Botânica MarinhaPublication . Mouga, TeresaÉ consensual que a inovação pedagógica desempenha um papel fundamental na formação dos estudantes, especialmente nas áreas STEM, crucial para os preparar para os desafios do século XXI. Nesse sentido, foi desenvolvido um projeto de aprendizagem ativa na UC de Botânica Marinha, da licenciatura em Biologia Marinha. A aplicação destas metodologias demonstrou resultados significativos em relação ao desempenho dos estudantes, diferenças de género e satisfação dos estudantes. Os resultados apontam para uma diferença marcante no desempenho académico entre rapazes e raparigas, com as raparigas obtendo consistentemente melhores resultados, mas a introdução destas novas metodologias teve um impacto positivo no desempenho geral dos estudantes, com uma notável melhoria na participação dos rapazes nos testes. Os estudantes fizeram uma apreciação global das aulas, mostrando uma ligeira preferência pelas aulas expositivas em relação às aulas invertidas. No entanto, ambas as abordagens são consideradas úteis e compreensíveis, indicando que a combinação de diferentes métodos pedagógicos pode ser benéfica para atender às diversas necessidades e estilos de aprendizagem dos estudantes. Finalmente, destaca-se a popularidade do escape-room como uma atividade de aprendizagem, evidenciando que abordagens criativas e envolventes podem aumentar a motivação dos estudantes e o seu interesse pelo conteúdo.
- Assessing Ecological Quality on the Rocky Coast of Abalo Beach, PortugalPublication . Mouga, TeresaPortugal’s rich marine biodiversity, home to approximately 550 seaweed species, is distributed across biogeographical regions influenced by Atlantic and Mediterranean climates. Human-induced stressors, including habitat degradation, pollution, and climate change, have impacted seaweed ecosystems, changed the distribution patterns and promoting the invasion of alien species. This paper evaluates the ecological dynamics of seaweed communities on the rocky coast of Abalo Beach, Portugal, using the Marine Macroalgae Assessment Tool (MarMAT) in 2022 and 2023. The MarMAT methodology, endorsed by the Portuguese Environment Agency, assesses the ecological quality of coastal areas based on taxonomic composition, diversity, and biomass of macroalgae. The assessment revealed different percentages of late-successional species (ESGI) and annual (ESGII) seaweeds, indicating a subtle decrease in late-successional species. Of concern is the increase in invasive species from one in 2009 to six in 2023, suggesting a potential threat to ecosystem integrity. Comparative analysis with previous studies confirms the ongoing ecolog ical quality and resilience of Abalo Beach. The article underscores the importance of continuous monitoring amid environmental changes and the rise of invasive species.
- Assessing High-Value Bioproducts from Seaweed Biomass: A Comparative Study of Wild, Cultivated and Residual Pulp SourcesPublication . Ferreira, Henrique S.; Mouga, Teresa; Lourenço, Sílvia; Matias, Margarida H.; Freitas, Marta V.; Clélia Neves-AfonsoThis study aimed to evaluate the biochemical composition and bioactivities of biomass derived from wild (Laminaria ochroleuca and Saccorhiza polyschides) and cultivated (Macrocystis pyrifera) kelps, as well as industrially extracted residual pulp from M. pyrifera, to assess the potential production of high value bioproducts. All samples had a low lipid content, with M. pyrifera having the lowest (1.3% dw) and S. polyschides showing the highest value (3.3%). Fatty acids such as palmitic acid (C16:0), oleic acid (C18:1n-9 cis), alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, C18:3n-3), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5n-3) were present, with the residual pulp having a distinctive n-6/n-3 ratio of less than one. The protein content was around 9% dry weight (dw) in all samples. The residual pulp and S. polyschides had the highest polyphenol content, with 4.86 and 4.94 mg GAE·g−1 extract, respectively. Hydroethanolic extracts (30–70%) confirmed Fe3+ reducing activity (FRAP) in all samples. These findings offer valuable insights on the biochemical composition and bioactivity of the kelp species under study and the residual kelp biomass (pulp), underlining their significant potential for applications in the field of Blue Biotechnology.
- Berlengas Biosphere Reserve : plan for the assessment of ecosystem services and functionsPublication . Leandro, Sérgio; Marques, Daniel; Mouga, Teresa; Coelho, Helena; Rodrigues, Sandra; Maranhão, PauloThe project Berlengas Biosphere Reserve Plan for the Assessment of Ecosystem Services and Functions arises from the need to identify and assess ecosystem services, promoting sustainable uses of the services in the Reserve. The high degradation rate currently observed in the natural systems, thus reducing the level and quality of ecosystem services, is reflected in a negative effect on environmental quality, human wellbeing and in some economic activities. Thus, it becomes inevitable to promote the need to convey the importance of these services to society. It is also essential to contribute to the development of innovative and environmentally sustainable practices which will maintain the functioning of the local ecosystem and the sustainability of the services. Thus, the main goals of this project are i) to identify and analyse the impacts and dependencies on ecosystem services in the Reserve; ii) to analyse the trends of the priority services, iii) to identify the risks and opportunities associated with these services; iv) to evaluate their value and ultimately iv) to disseminate the results improving conservation and management. Based on the results to be obtained through the evaluation and maintenance of these services it is expected an improvement on the environment in the region and the development of efficient mechanisms for the management of resources. Started in February 2014, over the past 3 months much research has already been conducted, with emphasis for the identification of services and opportunities in the Reserve. Ecosystem services in Berlengas can range from simply providing essential goods or support (e.g. fish) to cultural services (e.g. field trips, diving). Work is also being done to develop, define and optimize the methods to assess ecosystems services trends and values.
- BUBBLE-NET : system to catch fish and the respective method of usePublication . Correia, Claudia; Matos, Carlos; Mouga, TeresaFishing is a socio-economic activity of great relevance worldwide. However the environmental sustainability of the fishing gears is far from being effective. It is necessary to find more selective types of fishing to ensure sustainable catches of target species and also to protect other organisms accidentally caught with no commercial value. The answer to these problems arises, often, from the nature itself, as in the case of bubble net feeding, the feeding behavior of the humpback whale (Megaptera novaengliae). These whales trap the school of fish surrounding them with a wall of bubbles they send by the blowhole (Leighton et al, 2004) (Johson et al, 1984), (fig. 1). Thus, we are developing a device that mimics the whale behavior. This device presents large environmental benefits such as the reduction of bycatch, the absence of ghost fishing, clean capture, that is the absence of human handling, and sustainable yield by allowing the capture of the legal quantities and sizes. There are also economic advantages, such as the reduction of fishing gear, increased device lifetime and reduction of maintenance cost associated .
- Can Phlorotannins Purified Extracts Constitute a Novel Pharmacological Alternative for Microbial Infections with Associated Inflammatory Conditions?Publication . Lopes, Graciliana; Sousa, Carla; Silva, Luís R.; Pinto, Eugénia; Andrade, Paula B.; Bernardo, João; Mouga, Teresa; Valentão, PatríciaBacterial and fungal infections and the emerging multidrug resistance are driving interest in fighting these microorganisms with natural products, which have generally been considered complementary to pharmacological therapies. Phlorotannins are polyphenols restricted to brown seaweeds, recognized for their biological capacity. This study represents the first research on the antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of phlorotannins purified extracts, which were obtained from ten dominant brown seaweeds of the occidental Portuguese coast. Phlorotannins content was determined by the specific dimethoxybenzaldehyde (DMBA) method and a yield between 75 and 969 mg/Kg phloroglucinol units (dry matter) was obtained. Fucus spiralis ranked first, followed by three Cystoseira species. The antiinflammatory potential of the purified extracts was assessed via inhibitory effect on nitric oxide (NO) production by lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells, Cystoseira tamariscifolia being the one showing promising activity for the treatment of inflammation. NO scavenging ability was also addressed in cell free systems, F. spiralis being the species with highest capacity. The antimicrobial potential of the extracts was checked against five Gram-positive and four Gram-negative bacteria and three fungi strains, that commonly colonize skin and mucosa and are responsible for food contamination. The different extracts were more effective against Gram-positive bacteria, Staphylococcus epidermidis being the most susceptible species. Concerning antifungal activity, Trichophyton rubrum was the most sensitive species. Although the molecular mechanisms underlying these properties remain poorly understood, the results obtained turn phlorotannins purified extracts a novel and potent pharmacological alternative for the treatment of a wide range of microbial infections, which usually also present an inflammatory component. In addition to the biological properties demonstrated herein, phlorotannins extracts may also be preferred, in order to avoid side effects and allergic reactions commonly associated with synthetic drugs.

J.The chemical control of limestone-growing wall vegetation has to be made carefully, to prevent damage caused by acid herbicides. The results obtained with a new methodology of herbicide neutralisation by potassium hydroxide are here presented. This neutralisation proved its efficiency both in killing the plantsand decreasing the damage caused to the stone.
