As espécies-alvo foram o roque-de-castro Hydrobates castro, a cagarra Calonectris borealis, a galheta Gulosus aristotelis, a gaivota-d'asa-escura Larus fuscus, a gaivota-de-patas amarelas Larus michahellis e o airo Uria aalge.
- Pulmonary Rehabilitation Guideline Referral in COPD - a FHIR mapping proposalPublication . Hipólito, Nádia; Jácome, Cristina; Almeida, Rute; Vieira-Marques, PedroChronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a highly prevalent progressive respiratory disease, characterized by airflow limitation, respiratory symptoms, and exercise intolerance, which greatly impacts patient’s daily life. Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) is a well-recognized, cost-effective, and safe intervention with known benefits, recommended by COPD management guidelines. Despite this, there is a potential sub-diagnosis of the condition and low access rates to PR in the COPD population. Reasons may include a lack of detailed knowledge about how to refer potential patients to PR and the lack of specific criteria for the referral. Information about the patient’sstatus and available services also plays a vital role in referrals. Additionally, there is high heterogeneity of outcomes and measures reported in the literature for PR, hindering the benchmark and dissemination of its efficacy and evidence synthesis; it also prevents communication and inter-institutional and international work. Thus, improving information availability and flow can facilitate a more efficient process. This study aims to develop an interoperable digital protocol for PR referral, to support healthcare professionals in the datacollection and referral process, making the process simpler and more efficient while also contributing to a transparent and coherent interinstitutional data exchange and continuous workflow. The variables and associatedoutcomes recommended by the Portuguese General Health Direction (Direção Geral da Saúde, DGS) in the standard 014/2019 regarding PR programs referral in primary care were described and translated to the HL7-FHIR health datastandard. The flow of the protocol was also presented. This work aims to contribute to facilitating the process of PR referral by proposing a FHIR-based approach for describing relevant information and the decision-making process for PR referral, aiming to contribute for the support of health professionals in the referral decision-making process in primary care, making it simpler and more efficient while also contributing to inter-institutional workflow articulation and information availability.
- Falls efficacy scale – Formal caregivers: Adaptation and validation in Portuguese nursing homesPublication . Lavareda Baixinho, Cristina; Marques-Vieira, Cristina; Sousa, Luís; Abrantes, António; Conceição, Nuno; Martins, Amaro; Henriques, Maria Adriana; Dixe, Maria dos AnjosThe literature review shows that the fear of falling is present in older persons’, but also in their careers and influences the performance of activities of daily living. The objective of this methodological study was to adapt and validate the Falls Efficacy Scale – Formal Caregivers. The development of the examined scale was based on the Falls Efficacy Scale – International, which was adapted for assessing the fear of falling in formal caregivers. The instrument was filled out by 319 formal caregivers of older people living in 11 Portuguese nursing homes for older people. Their average age was 46.8 ± 10.7 years, they had been working in this role for 13.4 ± 8.2 years, and 67.7 % of them attended vocational training in the workplace after being employed at the nursing home. Falls Efficacy Scale – Formal Caregivers, which contains 16 items, showed good internal consistency (α = 0.848). These items were organized into 3 factors after exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (lesser physical effort activities; intermediate physical effort activities, carried out in safe conditions; and intermediate physical effort activities, carried out in less safe conditions), with adequate convergent validity.
- Strategy Conduct in Strategy-as-Practice: A Look into the Social Interactions Inside an Advisory BoardPublication . Marietto, Márcio Luiz; Serra, Fernando Antonio Ribeiro; Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Cassol, AlessandraResearching social interactions within advisory boards, our study focuses on a family-holding company’s strategy formation process. Applying Strategy-as-Practice (S-as-P) within a Structurationist perspective, we analyzed practitioners’ strategic conduct. Through 1 year of non-participation observation, interviews and document analysis, we uncovered complex social dynamics and paradoxical behaviors, emphasizing structural properties influencing strategic formation. Our contribution lies in a model proposing four propositions for future S-as-P studies in advisory boards within Structuration Theory. This research sheds light on discrepancies between formal practices and actual social behaviors, enhancing transparency in corporate dynamics, which often remain obscure.
- Abieta-7,13-Diene in Nematode-Infected Pinewood Pinus pinaster Branch Extracts: Isolation and the Elucidation and Characterization of Its StructurePublication . Gaspar, Marisa C.; Cruz, Pedro F.; Brito, Rui M. M.; Sousa, Hermínio C. de; Braga, Mara E. M.The oleoresin and volatile fraction produced by conifers, such as Pinus pinaster, play a crucial role in plant defence, acting as precursors to resin acids and adapting in response to environmental stress or pathogen attacks. Abietadiene (abieta-7,13-diene), the biosynthetic precursor to abietic acid, has been identified as the most abundant compound in extracts from pinewood nematode (PWN)-infected P. pinaster trees. As abietadiene is not commercially available, this study aimed to achieve, for the first time, its isolation, structure elucidation, and detailed characterization from readily available forestry residues. Abietadiene was successfully isolated using thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and its purity and identity were evaluated using multiple analytical techniques: gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). GC analysis indicated a purity of over 70% for the isolated compound, while LC provided the higher purity value of 98%. The identity of abietadiene was unequivocally confirmed through LC, FTIR, and NMR analysis. This work represents the first isolation and comprehensive characterization of abietadiene from a natural source, making detailed chemical data on this compound available to the scientific community. These findings may be used for future studies on the biological interactions and ecological roles of abietadiene, particularly in the context of plant defence and pathogen resistance.
- Future accounting professionals – how important is teaching for sustainability?Publication . Gomes, Sónia; Jorge, Susana; Eugénio, TeresaPurpose – This study aims to analyze Portuguese professional regulators’ perspectives on the importance given to sustainable development (SD) issues and their position on integrating SD in the curricula of accounting and management courses. Secondly, it seeks to analyze, from the student’s perspective, the importance of SD for their future professional performance as accountants or auditors. Design/methodology/approach – Interviews were conducted with the heads of the two professional regulatory bodies in Portugal. A complimentary content analysis of professional journals and other types of publications, training activities, videos of conferences, meetings and training sessions available on the official websites of these bodies and social media was also carried out. Data on students’ perspectives were collected through a questionnaire sent to students enrolled in accounting and management courses at higher education institutions (HEIs) in Portugal in 2020. Findings – There is evidence that further interaction between professional regulators and HEIs is still needed to integrate teaching sustainable development (TSD) in the academic curricula; moreover, regulators expressed concern about raising awareness of the topic among future professionals. In turn, students consider that knowledge of SD is fundamental to their professional future. These students’ interests may motivate HEIs to integrate TSD since this will improve their professional performance in companies and contribute to realizing SD in general. Research limitations/implications – This study carried out in the Portuguese context, contributes to the gap in the literature. Portugal is part of the EU and must comply with EU directives on sustainability reports. Also, it contributes to answering UN calls as proposed by UNESCO, about the importance of teaching this subject nowadays, more relevant than ever. By emphasizing the importance of TSD, the study aims to raise awareness among students and educators about the urgent need for sustainable practices in business. This awareness can influence public attitudes toward sustainability and contribute to a more informed society. Originality/value – This study is innovative in that it seeks to assess, from the perspective of professional regulators, their position on integrating SD into the curricula of accounting and management courses. It also analyses the views of professional regulators and students on the importance of TSD for the performance of future professionals.
- Motor Competence and Sports Practice in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Pilot Study in GymnasticsPublication . Quito, Geraldine; Jacinto, Miguel; Amaro, Nuno; Monteiro, Diogo; Antunes, Raul; Matos, Rui; Oliveira Diz, Susana Cristina; Leitão Mira, Tânia SoraiaThe practice of physical activity, exercise, and sports brings various benefits to the general population. However, a few intervention programs involving physical activity and sports have been specifically designed for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of implementing a sports program based on gymnastics (specifically trampolines) on the motor skills of children with ASD. The program ran from September to May 2024 (8 months duration) using the Motor Competence Assessment Battery (MCA) as an evaluation tool. It included three typically developing children and three children with ASD, all aged between 4 and 5 years. The program sessions lasted 45 min and took place twice a week. The MCA Battery was administered to assess motor skills before and after the intervention. After the intervention program, significant differences were found only between moments in the Shuttle Run test (pre-intervention ≠ and post-intervention; Bonferroni correction: t = −2.00; p = 0.043; w = 0.33). Based on these results, we can conclude that practicing a sports program based on gymnastics (namely trampolines) can contribute to improving the motor skills of children with ASD.
- A Complex Intervention to Minimize Medication Error by Nurses in Intensive Care: A Case StudyPublication . Coelho, Fábio; Furtado, Luís; Tavares, Márcio; Pereira, Joana SousaBackground/Objectives: Medication errors are the most frequent and critical issues in healthcare settings, often leading to worsened clinical outcomes, increased treatment costs, extended hospital stays, and heightened mortality and morbidity rates. These errors are particularly prevalent in intensive care units (ICUs), where the complexity and critical nature of the care elevate the risks. Nurses play a pivotal role in preventing medication errors and require strategies and methods to enhance patient safety. This study aims to develop a comprehensive and evidence-based intervention to minimize medication errors by nurses in ICUs. Methods: This qualitative case study forms a part of a broader research project that commenced with a scoping review. Building on the review findings, a complex intervention was designed to address nurses’ medication errors. A focus group of experts was conducted to validate the intervention designed, evaluating its contextual feasibility and relevance. Results: This study led to the development of a complex intervention whose relevance lies in its potential implementation within the studied context. The resulting intervention was structured around four main components—educational interventions, verification and safety methods, organizational and functional modifications, and an error reporting system—meticulously designed to leverage the ICU’s existing resources. Conclusions: In conclusion, the proposed intervention has the potential to positively impact healthcare quality by reducing errors and promoting a culture of safety. Furthermore, this study’s findings provide a relevant foundation for future research and practical applications, driving advancements in healthcare service excellence.
