- E-TherapyPublication . Reis, Catarina I.; Freire, Carla; Monguet, Josep M.Nowadays, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are being used in the mental health field to improve the quality of the services provided. Several studies refer both advantages and disadvantages for these practices. E-Therapy appears as a new way to help people in their life and existing relationships, and there is proven evidence that online therapy helps, for instance, to reduce depression symptoms. It is also seen as a complement of the technological and traditional techniques, to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the therapeutic process. As a matter of fact, some people tend to be more comfortable with the computer than in face-toface therapy. Besides patients and physicians, other direct players could be found in this domain, namely, families and caregivers. All players will be directly affected by the use of existing services and thus, a correct assessment of the effectiveness of e-Therapy solutions and studies is required. eSchi is a multimedia portal that enables an e-Therapy setting for schizophrenia patients. Currently under development, the system is described and future trends in the area are depicted.
- eSchi – A Multimedia Portal for Schizophrenia Learning and Rehabilitation - Work in ProgressPublication . Freire, Carla; Reis, Catarina I.; Monguet, Josep M.Schizophrenic patients suffer a severe psychiatric disorder that impairs their cognitive skills. They are frequently ostracized from society and their condition might lead them to isolation. In order to provide adequate and sustained treatment to these individuals, psychological interventions are being used as an adjunctive to medication. Some of these interventions imply the learning and training of cognitive and social skills by patients. E-therapy is seen as the new technical enabler of traditional therapeutic practices providing: access to an improved communication channel with a therapist, more comfort and reducing the geographical distances and costs associated to the illness. We describe an ongoing project – eSchi – a multimedia portal - that is indented to be used in a psychiatric hospital in Barcelona as a complement to their traditional learning and rehabilitation practices. The field work will provide the proof-of-concept for monitoring the patient performance and the social interactions involved in the system.
- eSchi – an e-therapy tool for rehabilitation and trainingPublication . Reis, Catarina I.; Freire, Carla; Fernandez, Joaquin; Monguet, Josep M.E-therapy aims to provide therapy sessions through recent communication mediums (internet) between patients and therapists. eSchi is an e-Therapy tool currently being developed by the authors and will work as a complement to traditional rehabilitation and training practices, It has distinct modules and the patient module, here described, will have patients as their primary actors. These patients have special psychiatric conditions that imply special attention and considerations both in the design and implementation phases of the software. In order to provide the ideal tool for its target audience, previous to the delivery, a test phase was conducted. In the test phase, both a beta test and heuristic evaluations were made. Tests results showed the lack of some significant aspects that were then corrected and a new version of the tool was produced.
- Patient Centered Design : Challenges and Lessons Learned from Working with Health Professionals and Schizophrenic Patients in e-Therapy ContextsPublication . Reis, Catarina I.; Freire, Carla; Fernández, Joaquin; Monguet, Josep M.Patient Centered Design (PCD) is a particular type of User Centered Design (UCD) where the end-user is a patient that will use an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) solution for healthcare. It focuses on needs, wants and skills of the product’s primary user and implies involving end-users in the decision-making and development process of the solution. e-Therapy aims to provide support to therapy sessions through ICT solutions. In the mental health arena is being used for specific therapeutic contexts and is an especially difficult environment due to specificities of the patients' conditions; the physical access to patients is restricted and, sometimes, not even possible. Thus, a PCD approach can be accomplished through the health professionals involved, applying some of the most well-known methods of UCD: interviews, questionnaires, focus groups and participatory design. eSchi is an e-Therapy tool that complements traditional practices for the cognitive rehabilitation and training of schizophrenic patients and was successfully developed using a PCD approach.

- Schizophrenic patients’ expectations facing technology in a cognitive rehabilitation therapy environmentPublication . Freire, Carla; Reis, Catarina I.; Monguet, Josep M.; Fernandez, JoaquineTherapy can bring numerous advantages, however people have to adapt to a different discourse. It would be interesting to know patients’ expectations regarding to this type of therapy. A questionnaire was developed with the most studied factors proved to have an important role in technology acceptance. The results allowed highlighting some important factors that influence behavioral intention, and made it possible to verify that some of these factors may be linked or influence others among different dimensions.
- Towards an adaptive web based learning environment for treating and diagnosing chronic woundsPublication . Costa, João; Costa, Rogério; Santos, Gustavo; Gaspar, Pedro; Fernandez, Joaquin; Monguet, Josep M.A wise decision when choosing adequate products to treat chronic wounds depends on proper diagnosis and characterization of the chronic wound. Developing skills for treating and diagnosing chronic wounds requires not only academic knowledge, but also other types of knowledge not easily acquired through traditional instructional methodologies. The expertise obtained by individuals, when they are solving real life practical cases, is very important to diagnose and correctly treat chronic wounds. This additional empirical knowledge is not easily transmitted in classrooms, and so the academic instruction should be completed with real life practical examples and practical cases. The e-Fer Web Based Learning Environment for chronic wounds, is a case based learning tool for assisting nursing students to develop skills for diagnosing and treating chronic wounds. This paper will briefly describe some characteristics of the platform, and our main goal is to present our novel approach to implement the adaptive version of the learning environment. We are also going to discuss our user model, and the types of learning support that we decided to implement in the system.
