  • What is a football champion made of? Scoring and preventing opponent teams from scoring in the 21st century in the top six European leagues
Publication . Matos, Rui; Rodrigues, Filipe; Amaro, Nuno; Jacinto, Miguel; Mendes, Diogo; Monteiro, Diogo
The present study aimed to compare the scored and conceded goals of the top six European football leagues (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, England, and Germany) between 2001 and 2020. The champions have a mean combo (indicator that combines attack and defence ranking) result between 1 and 1.40. The French and Italian leagues were the only ones where variation coefficients of this combo result overpassed 50% (71 and 59%, respectively) compared to the remaining football leagues. Further subsequent analysis showed that the Portuguese and French leagues differ significantly from Italy in terms of the best attack position of the champions (Z= 3.196; p= 0.01; η2= 0.123). Regarding position in the defensive ranking, Portugal and Italy showed significantly different results compared to France (Z= 3.763; p= 0.003; η2= 1.42). Besides, the only two countries with significant differences in scored and conceded goals positioning were France (attack better than defence; t= -3; p< 0.01; d= 2.236) and Italy (defence better than attack; t= 2.881 p< 0.01; d= 1.164). Hence, in the French football league, a higher attack performance than a defence seems to indicate the champion. Oppositely, in the Italian football league, champions traditionally occupy top positioning on defence, even if they do not present the same performance on scored goals.
  • Assessment of Isokinetic Strength of Knee Extension/Flexion of Individuals With Intellectual Developmental Disabilities—Systematic Review With Protocol Proposal
Publication . Jacinto, Miguel; Caseiro, André; Antunes, Raul; Monteiro, Diogo; Campos, MJ; Matos, Rui; Ferreira, José Pedro; Gomes, Beatriz Branquinho
Muscle performance is a crucial determinant of physical function in the daily lives of individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities (IDD), with lower strength levels often leading to loss of independence. The isokinetic dynamometer has been established as a reliable method for assessing muscle performance in this population. This article outlines the design of a protocol to be adopted to assess isokinetic knee strength in individuals with IDD. Using systematic review methodology, electronic searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science databases, including articles published between January 1990 and September 2022. The key terms were combined with the Boolean operator “AND” or “OR”. After the methodological process, 23 studies were included for analysis. The protocol proposal consists of 8 phases, covering previous considerations: (a) warm-up, (b) familiarization; (c) equipment adjustment, choosing the limb to evaluate and in what type of action (concentric and/or eccentric); (d) number of repetitions and sets; (e) the rest duration; (f) angular velocity to be tested; and (g) parameters for analysis. It is intended that this article provide insights into the development of a useful tool for the various stakeholders interested in assessing the isokinetic knee strength of individuals with IDD.
  • Exploring the Dynamics of Athletes’ Enjoyment and Self-Determined Motivation, and of the Motivational Climate in Youth Football: A Longitudinal Perspective
Publication . Rodrigues, Filipe; Monteiro, Diogo; Matos, Rui; Jacinto, Miguel; Antunes, Raul; Amaro, Nuno
We aimed to explore a short period longitudinal interplay between athletes’ enjoyment and their self-determined motivation and motivational climate in youth football. We recruited 109 youth football athletes (79 males, 30 females) through a convenient sampling method. We included individuals within the 12–17-year-old age range, with a mean age of 14.31 (SD = 1.46) years. To examine these proposed associations, we performed hierarchical multiple regression analyses and found that enjoyment at pre-season assessment (T1) and self-determined motivation and a task-involving sport climate at mid-season (T2) were significant predictors of mid-season enjoyment (at T2). However, self-determined motivation and task-involving climate at T1 did not significantly contribute to the model. These findings emphasize the importance of initial enjoyment and an evolved self-determined motivation, and task-involving climate in understanding later enjoyment in sport. Coaches, practitioners, and policymakers should prioritize strategies that enhance intrinsic motivation, provide opportunities for autonomy, and cultivate a supportive and growth-oriented environment.
  • What Drives Portuguese Women to Be Physically Active? Associations between Motives and Well-Being Indicators
Publication . Silva, Alicia; Antunes, Raul; Monteiro, Diogo; Jacinto, Miguel; Matos, Rui; Rodrigues, Filipe
Motives and self-esteem play crucial roles in shaping personal behavior and emotions and have been shown to impact well-being. However, the association between these constructs has been overlooked in women who seem to be more externally driven to engage in exercise. The present study was carried out with the objective of analyzing the associations between motives for physical exercise, positive and negative activations, and self-esteem of Portuguese women exercising at gyms and fitness centers. The sample consists of 206 women aged between 16 and 68 years old (M = 35.77; SD = 11.47). Participants answered a short sociodemographic questionnaire, the Goal Content for Exercise Questionnaire, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, and the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale. The results showed that the health motive had the highest predictive value (β = 0.24; p < 0.01) on self-esteem and demonstrated a positive and significant correlation with positive activation and self-esteem (p < 0.01). On the other hand, the social recognition motive had the lowest predictive value on self-esteem (β = −0.04; p > 0.05) and demonstrated a non-significant correlation with positive activation and self-esteem (p > 0.05). Looking at the coefficients in the hierarchical regression model, it can be seen that the health motive and positive activation were positively and significantly correlated with self-esteem. This study points to the need to raise awareness about the motives of exercise related to the physical and mental health of Portuguese women. Portuguese women that exercise for health motives display greater perceived self-esteem which is an indication of a greater sense of well-being. While the results are limited to Portuguese women, exercise physiologists assessing exercise motives could provide information on how to prescribe exercise as a means to increase self-esteem, considering the positive activation resulting from this behavior.
  • The Practice of Physical Exercise and Sports in Portuguese Trans Youth: A Case Study
Publication . Oliveira, Joana; Frontini, Roberta; Jacinto, Miguel; Antunes, Raul
The following case study aims to analyze the experience of a Portuguese trans individual regarding their practice of physical exercise (PE) and sports in Portuguese gyms and sports clubs. A 30-min interview was conducted through the Zoom platform. Before the interview, four questionnaires—Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and EUROHIS-QOL 8-item index—were also applied, all in their Portuguese version. The interview was digitally video recorded after consent was obtained, transcribed verbatim, and subject to thematic analysis. Findings suggest positive values for satisfaction with life and quality of life. The values of positive affect were higher than those of negative affect, and there was an absence of depressive and anxious symptomatology. In the qualitative analysis, mental health was the main motive for the practice, while locker rooms separated by gender and university life were the main barriers mentioned. Mixed changing rooms were identified as facilitators of PE practice. This study highlights the importance of developing strategies for the creation of mixed changing rooms and sports teams in order to promote a comfortable and safe practice for all individuals.
  • Task-Involving Motivational Climate and Enjoyment in Youth Male Football Athletes: The Mediation Role of Self-Determined Motivation
Publication . Amaro, Nuno; Monteiro, Diogo; Rodrigues, Filipe; Matos, Rui; Jacinto, Miguel; Cavaco, Beatriz; Jorge, Sandro; Antunes, Raul
Background: This study aimed at examining the mediation role of self-determined motivation (identified and integrated regulation and intrinsic motivation) in the association between task-involving climate and enjoyment in youth male football athletes. Methods: A total of 109 youth males (M = 14.38; SD = 1.55) were recruited to participate in this study. The survey included sociodemographic data and validated instruments such as the Motivational Climate Sport Youth Scale, the Behavioral Regulation Sport Questionnaire, and the Sports Enjoyment Scale. Results: The results showed that the task-involving climate was a positive and significant predictor of integrated regulation and intrinsic motivation. In addition, integrated regulation and intrinsic motivation were positive and significant predictors of enjoyment. The results of the mediation analysis revealed a partial mediation role of self-determined motivation in the relationship between task-involving climate and enjoyment. Significant indirect effects only occurred through intrinsic motivation. Conclusions: Providing higher levels of enjoyment in the sport context could be an excellent option for leisure activities for children and youth, as long as self-determined motivation and task-involving climates provided by the coaches are present.
  • An overview of the effects of physical exercise programs on individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Publication . Jacinto, Miguel; Ferreira, José Pedro; Monteiro, Diogo; Antunes, Raul; Campos, MJ; Matos, Rui
Being aware of the relevance of physical exercise in individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), we intend to conduct a brief review on the importance of regular physical exercise for this population. An approach will be taken in order to acknowledge the barriers to the high rates of sedentary lifestyles in this population, the potential benefits of physical exercise, and the essential aspects for a correct assessment, prescription, and implementation of these programs in the population with IDD, through a reflection supported by scientific evidence. The current overview aims to provide relevant information regarding the health benefits of physical exercise in individuals with IDD, as the basis for QoL promoting more active and healthier lifestyles, namely through structured physical exercise. In addition, it is also a useful tool for consultation by exercise professionals since adjusted indoor and outdoor exercise programs are listed.
  • Recommendations for the Evaluation and Prescription of Strength Training in Individuals with Intellectual Difficulty and Development: Narrative Review
Publication . Jacinto, Miguel; Monteiro, Diogo; Oliveira, Rafael; Brito, João; Vitorino, Anabela
There are several benefits through the realization of physical exercise programs (EP) in individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Difficulties (DID), however, the literature presents a shortage in the implementation and a small number of studies with very different methodologies and types of training. Short-term interventions, a reduced number of longitudinal studies, methodological gaps and inappropriate training methods, hinder more explicit and consensual conclusions regarding the prescription and its results. However, EP programs, in particular strength training (ST), which has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, can be an asset for the individual with DID, given the prevalence of several comorbidities, namely hypertension, cholesterol and type II diabetes. The present study aims to identify the fundamental and structuring aspects for the prescription of ST, namely the assessment methods, intensity, duration, frequency, appropriate exercises and their relationship with the results, through the methodology using the narrative review, starting from the characterization of various ST programs implemented in individuals with DID. The results are presented in the form of recommendations for the evaluation and prescription of ST programs, in the population with DID.
  • Exploring the Relationship Between Wall Drop Punt Kick and Catch (Tripela Sports) Performance and Manipulative Tests of the Motor Competence Assessment Battery in Early Adolescents
Publication . Matos, Rui; Amaro, Nuno; Lopes, Nataniel; Costa, Pedro; Jacinto, Miguel; Rodrigues, Filipe; Antunes, Raul; Coelho, Luís; Ibáñez, Sergio J.; Estevan, Isaac; Monteiro, Diogo
Our aim in this study was to analyze associations between the two manipulative tests of the Motor Competence Assessment (MCA) battery and the Wall Drop Punt Kick & Catch (WDPK&C) motor task. One hundred and twelve early adolescents (60 boys; 52 girls; M age = 12.67, SD = 1.78 years) participated. Overall, strong correlations were found between the WDPK&C and the MCA manipulative tests, either separately (r = .802 for kicking, r = .762 for throwing) or collectively (r = .835). In boys, correlations between WDPK&C and MCA kicking (r = .722) and MCA throwing (r = .754) were similar. In girls, MCA kicking was more closely related to WDPK&C performance (r = .612) than MCA throwing (r = .330). These results reinforce the possible use of WDPK&C as a gross manipulative coordination test, either by itself or when integrated into motor competence batteries.
