- Economic And Social Benefits In FSC Certified Companies Located In BrazilPublication . Fagundes, Camila; Schreiber, Dusan; Nunes, Moema; Fernandes, Maria Eduarda; Damacena, ClaudioAmong the largest and most recognized forest certifications, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) deserves spe- cial mention. Its objective is to certify forest-origin products that come from socially fair, environmentally ade- quate, and economically viable management. This study aimed to investigate whether the duration of certification and the organizational size influence the perception of economic and social benefits of FSC Certification from the perspective of managers of Brazilian companies holding this seal. To achieve this objective, a quantitative survey was conducted with 54 Brazilian companies. Regarding the economic and social dimensions of sustaina- bility, the "Certification Time" appears to influence the perception of FSC benefits, as indicated by p-values lower than 0.05 in the Kruskal-Wallis test. Furthermore, Dunn's test revealed that companies with a longer certification period, on average 10 years, perceive more benefits. Based on the presented results, it can be concluded that the "Certification Time" can influence the perceptions of economic and social benefits of FSC Certification, while the organizational size did not demonstrate significant influence on the generation of benefits. One of the main con- tributions of this study, both in academia and for organizations in the agroforestry sector, is providing insights to support the design of actions and strategies aimed at rapidly enhancing the benefits of FSC Certification and encouraging companies to adopt it.
- Do emission permits markets' original advantages still hold?Publication . Fernandes, Maria Eduarda; Pinto, Lígia; Botelho, AnabelaEmission permits markets have been implemented all over the world but in very different conditions than those assumed in the original models developed by Dales (1968) or Montgomery (1972). This paper summarizes the assumptions that are violated when implementing this policy instrument. Reviewing the most significant literature in the area, we analyse the consequences of these violations for the outcome of emission permits markets, and derive conclusions about whether the traditional advantages associated with this instrument still hold. The major solutions that have been suggested for the identified market failures are also described. We find that despite the conflicting results reported in the literature, there are some conclusions unanimously accepted. Importantly, we find that the characteristics of market institutions are significant determinants of the outcome of these markets, which means that these aspects may no longer be treated as a mere detail as within the neoclassical approach. In addition, we find that these characteristics have important impacts on many other “market failures” identified in this paper. Since these aspects were not included in the original models, their predictions differ from the results effectively achieved with the implementation of an emissions permit market.

- Improving stakeholder engagement in local strategic planning – experience sharing based on Portuguese examplesPublication . Fernandes, Maria Eduarda; Lopes, Ana Sofia; Sargento, AnaThis article aims to share a framework composed of key practices put in place to enhance stakeholder engagement in participatory governance processes. The experience was gained through the authors’ involvement in three Portuguese practice-based cases on participatory local strategic planning where the framework was successfully applied in overcoming the major risks of these participatory processes identified in the literature. A preliminary evaluation of the applied framework’s strengths and weaknesses is provided, envisioned to support similar initiatives. The quality and diversity of the stakeholders involved, together with the group dynamics applied, were recognized as the main strengths, since they promote equal participation, knowledge sharing, new ideas and consensus reaching, with stakeholders being highly committed with the planned objectives and actions. In two cases, the plans supported successful applications to 2014–2020 European Structural Funds’ policy instruments, resulting in the allocation of important funds to local entities, vital for territorial development.

- Measuring Sustainable Practices in Agribusiness: A Bibliometric AnalysisPublication . Monteiro, Sónia; Quesado, Patrícia; Ribeiro, Verónica; Fernandes, Maria Eduarda; Eugénio, Teresa; Costa, JoãoAs global concerns for sustainability matters have gained attention for businesses, industries, and economies, including agribusiness, the need to investigate the indicators that could evaluate sustainable performance in this sector has also risen. This paper aims to analyse the scientific production in the last decade (2011-2022) related to sustainable indicators (environmental, economic, social and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) in agribusiness. A bibliometric study was carried out using articles from the Scopus database. Afterwards, the most cited articles, journals and countries were analysed, and a thematic analysis of the keywords was carried out. Word maps, trend topics and thematic maps were carried out, as well as clustering analysis. Results indicate that research on sustainable indicators of agribusiness has increased over time. In recent years, the number of scientific papers on these topics has been increasing, probably associated with the approval of the United Nations 2030 Agenda in 2015. Italy has the most publications, the highest number of citations, and most extensive collaboration network. Most papers are published in two journals of higher impact. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is cited as the most usual method to assess agribusiness impact. Regarding the indicators to evaluate the sustainability of agribusiness, there is a more significant predominance of environmental indicators compared to economic and social indicators. Clustering analysis shows clusters 2 “environmental indicators” and 8 “LCA” have greater impact and centrality. The study is limited in scope to the Scopus database. Further research should include the Web of Science (WOS) database.
- Perception of Brazilian Companies on the Potential and Concrete Benefits Resulting from the FSC CertificationPublication . Fagundes, Camila; Schreiber, Dusan; Nunes, Moema Pereira; Fernandes, Maria EduardaConcern with the adequate use of natural resources has increased the relevance of products certifications in the wood supply chain, especially in companies established in Brazil, the cradle of one of the largest forest reserves. This study investigates the perception of companies on the potential and concrete benefits resulting from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. To achieve this, a multiple case study was carried out with data triangulation through semi-structured interviews, documentary research and non-participant observation. Four FSC certified industries established in Brazil were analyzed. The results showed that of the four companies participating in the study, only one did not achieve the desired economic benefits, whereas all organizations accomplished the advantages of the other areas of sustainability, both the social and environmental.
