- Economic And Social Benefits In FSC Certified Companies Located In BrazilPublication . Fagundes, Camila; Schreiber, Dusan; Nunes, Moema; Fernandes, Maria Eduarda; Damacena, ClaudioAmong the largest and most recognized forest certifications, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) deserves spe- cial mention. Its objective is to certify forest-origin products that come from socially fair, environmentally ade- quate, and economically viable management. This study aimed to investigate whether the duration of certification and the organizational size influence the perception of economic and social benefits of FSC Certification from the perspective of managers of Brazilian companies holding this seal. To achieve this objective, a quantitative survey was conducted with 54 Brazilian companies. Regarding the economic and social dimensions of sustaina- bility, the "Certification Time" appears to influence the perception of FSC benefits, as indicated by p-values lower than 0.05 in the Kruskal-Wallis test. Furthermore, Dunn's test revealed that companies with a longer certification period, on average 10 years, perceive more benefits. Based on the presented results, it can be concluded that the "Certification Time" can influence the perceptions of economic and social benefits of FSC Certification, while the organizational size did not demonstrate significant influence on the generation of benefits. One of the main con- tributions of this study, both in academia and for organizations in the agroforestry sector, is providing insights to support the design of actions and strategies aimed at rapidly enhancing the benefits of FSC Certification and encouraging companies to adopt it.
- Book of Proceedings of the 11th Typography MeetingPublication . Gomes, António Silveira; Morgado, Aprigio; Santos, Ricardo11ET was an event organised by the Graphic Design Masters Course of the School of Arts and Design Caldas da Rainha (ESADCR), by means of Leiria Polytechnic’s Design and Arts Laboratory. The 1st edition of the Typography Meeting was held in 2010 at ESADCR, bringing together professor, students and professionals, to discuss The teaching of Typography in Portugal. After 10 consecutive editions, LiDA (Laboratory in Design and Arts ), as part of the celebrations of the thirtieth anniversary of ESADCR, took on the organisation of the event, which due to the pandemic was not held in 2020. At that time, affected by the need for social distancing, many organisations were forced to rethink their events and opted for online formats. However, the 11th edition’s organising committee felt hat the size and intimate nature of previous editions meant it was best to retain the personal contact, postpone the event and propose a Reencounter in 2021. The theme, ‘Reencounter’, focused on the prefix ‘Re’, which denotes repetition, reinforcement and retreat, thus inviting us to rethink, reinstate and reform current theoretical and practical models of design. The pandemic scenario, with its profound environmental, economic and social implications, emerged as a form of pressure on all fields of knowledge and creativity, including, naturally, design and all types of human communication. In this light, what are the issues we can raise as a result of the political, economic and cultural challenges that teaching, research and creation in design and, in particular, Typography, have to face? At a time of pressing solidarity, which approaches to and narratives around design, teaching, history, culture, identity and technology will emerge from this crisis to be understood and shared? We invited the academic and professional communities to reflect on these issues, to attend and take part in the workshops and conference, and to submit communications (Articles, Posters or Short Talks) in the fields of graphic design, typography, typeface design; lettering, calligraphy, visual identity and language, design teaching, history or criticism. The Meeting met all of its preset goals and exceeded the organisation’s expectations in terms of the number of participants. Concerned with the uncertainty of the times, the organisation opted to hold the Meeting at the Caldas da Rainha Cultural Centre’s small auditorium. Seating only 150 it was soon sold out and those who delayed enrolling were unable to attend. A total of 137 people enrolled, of which 84 (61%) were 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle students from a range of national and international higher education establishments, 25 (18%) were speakers and the remainder (39%), teaching staff and professionals from a number of Technology and Communication Design fields. In addition to the conference, the workshops held on the eve of the event at the School of Arts and Design Caldas da Rainha proved to be popular. They were Animated Variable Font, run by Rainer Erich Scheichelbauer and Exploring New Handwritten Latin Script Styles, run by Petra Dočekalová. Given the atypical scenario we can say both the quantity and quality of the communications submitted (38) were high. The Technical and Scientific Committee accepted a total of 15 papers, 3 short-talks and 15 posters. The papers and posters are published in full herein. The submission accepted and presented at the conference dealt with the following topics: Typeface Design (67%), Typography and Communication Design (48%), Design History and Criticism (27%), Education (2%). We wish to highlight the quality of the presentations given by the guest speakers Andreu Balius, Fraçois Rappo, Petra Dočekalová, Sol Matas, Susana Carvalho and Thomas Huot-Marchand who, in a scholarly manner, shared their scientific and professional knowledge with the other participants, during and between the various sessions covering the Meeting’s range of topics. Of the seven guest speakers, only typeface designer Natanael Gama, was unable to attend for family reasons.
- Regional Disparities in Inflation Persistence: Unpacking the Dynamics of Price Growth in PortugalPublication . Santos, EleonoraThis paper investigates the degree of inflation persistence across regions in Portugal by analyzing the Consumer Price Index (CPI) growth rates for NUTS II regions. The study employs the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test to determine whether the CPI data for Portugal is stationary or non-stationary. The results of the ADF test reveal that the IPC data for Portugal is non-stationary, indicating that inflation exhibits persistence in the long run. The study further assesses the persistence of inflation by estimating an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model for each region. The Ljung-Box test is used to test for autocorrelation in the time series data, and the Hurst exponent is calculated to evaluate the presence of long-term memory in the time series data. The study finds that there is significant autocorrelation in the time series data for all regions, supporting the presence of persistence in inflation at the regional level in Portugal. The Hurst exponent also shows that the time series data for each region exhibits a high degree of persistence in inflation. Finally, the study applies the ARIMA model to each CPI division's data and uses the Ljung-Box test to test for autocorrelation in the time series data. The results show that some CPI divisions exhibited higher levels of persistence compared to others. For example, the "Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels" division exhibited high persistence, while the "Communication" division exhibited low persistence. This study contributes to the existing literature by exploring regional inflation persistence in Portugal and its implications for policymaking. The results provide insights into the inflation persistence patterns across regional levels in Portugal, by emphasizing the need to consider regional differences in inflation dynamics when formulating effective policy interventions. Understanding the persistence of inflation is crucial for policymakers to ensure price stability and sustainable economic growth.
- Teaching portuguese to chinese students: comparative study between remote and in person teaching in a language immersion contextPublication . Mangas, CatarinaThe Bachelor of Social Sciences in Sino-Lusophone Trade Relations aims to provide students with knowledge in the areas of Law, Management, Economics and Trade between China and Portuguesespeaking countries. The course is also expected to promote Portuguese language skills and an understanding and respect for their culture. In order to successfully achieve these goals, the students' linguistic and cultural immersion was considered a benefit to their training. Therefore, a protocol was established between the Macao Polytechnic University and the Polytechnic of Leiria, so the second year of the course could take place in Leiria, Portugal. However, there was a particularly challenging period for all members of the educational community, since, taking into account the contingency measures arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, the teaching and non-teaching activities took place in a distance format, namely in the academic years of 2020-2021 and 2021-2022. The research analyses the activities developed in the different teaching modalities and the results obtained by the students, in a comparative logic. The study has shown that remote teaching practices has made the implementation of some pedagogical actions more complex or, in some cases, impossible. Nevertheless, efforts were made to find alternatives that would provide the students with rich training moments that would contribute to the increase of their knowledge in the areas of specialty and proficiency in the Portuguese language.
- Technological features of smartphone apps for physical activity promotion in patients with COPD: A systematic reviewPublication . Silva, J.; Hipólito, N.; Machado, P.; Flora, S.; Cruz, J.Introduction: Low physical activity (PA) levels have a negative impact on the health status of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Smartphone applications (apps) focused on PA promotion may mitigate this problem; however, their effectiveness depends on patient adherence, which can be influenced by the technological features of the apps. This systematic review identified the technological features of smartphone apps aiming to promote PA in patients with COPD. Methods: A literature search was performed in the databases ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. Papers including the description of a smartphone app for PA promotion in patients with COPD were included. Two researchers independently selected studies and scored the apps features based on a previously developed framework (38 possible features). Results: Twenty-three studies were included and 19 apps identified, with an average of 10 technological features implemented. Eight apps could be connected to wearables to collect data. The categories ‘Measuring and monitoring’ and ‘Support and Feedback’ were present in all apps. Overall, the most implemented features were ‘progress in visual format’ (n=13), ‘advice on PA’ (n=14) and ‘data in visual format’ (n=10). Only three apps included social features, and two included a web-based version of the app. Conclusions: The existing smartphone apps include a relatively small number of features to promote PA, which are mostly related to monitoring and providing feedback. Further research is warranted to explore the relationship between the presence/absence of specific features and the impact of interventions on patients’ PA levels.

- Cultural adaptation and validation of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the PROactive Physical Activity in COPD–clinical visit instrument for individuals with COPDPublication . Santana, André Vinicius; Fontana, Andrea Daiane; Almeida, Rafaela Cristina de; Mantoani, Leandro Cruz; Camillo, Carlos Augusto; Furlanetto, Karina Couto; Rodrigues, Fátima; Cruz, Joana; Marques, Alda; Jácome, Cristina; Demeyer, Heleen; Dobbels, Fabienne; Garcia-Aymerich, Judith; Troosters, Thierry; Hernandes, Nidia Aparecida; Pitta, FabioObjective: To adapt the PROactive Physical Activity in COPD-clinical visit (C-PPAC) instrument to the cultural setting in Brazil and to determine the criterion validity, test-retest reliability agreement, and internal consistency of this version. Methods: A protocol for cultural adaptation and validation was provided by the authors of the original instrument and, together with another guideline, was applied in a Portuguese-language version developed by a partner research group from Portugal. The adapted Brazilian Portuguese version was then cross-sectionally administered twice within a seven-day interval to 30 individuals with COPD (57% were men; mean age was 69 ± 6 years; and mean FEV1 was 53 ± 18% of predicted) to evaluate internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Participants also completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), the modified Medical Research Council scale, the COPD Assessment Test, and Saint George's Respiratory Questionnaire to evaluate criterion validity. Results: The C-PPAC instrument showed good internal consistency and excellent test-retest reliability: "amount" domain = 0.87 (95% CI, 0.73-0.94) and "difficulty" domain = 0.90 (95% CI, 0.76-0.96). Bland & Altman plots, together with high Lin's concordance correlation coefficients, reinforced that agreement. Criterion validity showed moderate-to-strong correlations of the C-PPAC with all of the other instruments evaluated, especially with the IPAQ (rho = -0.63). Conclusions: The Brazilian Portuguese version of the C-PPAC is a reliable and valid instrument for evaluating the experience of Brazilian individuals with COPD with their physical activity in daily life.
- Is Additional CEO Remuneration a Performance Driver? DAX CEOs EvidencePublication . Costa, Magali; Lisboa, Inês; Marzinzik, RenéThis study aims to understand the impact of the additional remuneration of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) over the mean remuneration of the board of directors on firms’ financial performance. The objective is to understand if the highest compensation of the CEO is a firm performance driver. In addition to the impact of total remuneration, the different remuneration components were split and analyzed. An unbalanced panel data of listed companies in DAX–Germany over the period from 2006 until 2019 is analyzed. Using dynamic methodology to estimate the models, the results show that higher additional remuneration positively explains higher firm performance measured using both accounting and market measures. The impact is also evident when additional remuneration components are analyzed. These results support the tournament theory, since when CEOs feel rewarded, they are more efficient in increasing the firm’s performance. Moreover, the firms’ financial characteristics, as well as macroeconomic factors, are also relevant to explaining its performance.
