  • Human-Bed Interaction: A Methodology and Tool to Measure Postural Behavior during Sleep of the Air Force Military
Publication . Desouzart, Gustavo; Vilar, Ernesto Filgueiras; Melo, Filipe; Matos, Rui
The behavioral and postural habits and sleep rhythm of air force military change depending on the specialty work at the airbase or other types of events but we did not find anything in the literature to analyze and evaluate this behavior through sleep disorders. Perhaps this is related to the fact that the evaluation of this behavior is complex and the observation of these postural behaviors in the environmental context is needed. However the observation methodology based on ISEE software [9] allows the classification and registration of postural behaviors for long periods of time and can be applied in this context. This paper presents a study whose objective was to research the human interaction with postural behaviors during sleep in the residences' bedrooms of male air force military during the periods in which the subjects were asleep, awake, out of bed, doing activities, using a pillow in different time periods and with ecological validation with observation method and Visual Analogical Scale (VAS). A sample of 8666 observations, which corresponds to 240 sleep-hours of 12 air force military, was classified into six (6) Interaction Categories (IC). The results show that 50,2% of the participants presented the Lateral position (25,38% on the left and 24,86% on the right) as the most common postural behavior during sleep and 94,1% used only one pillow under their head. In the IĆs, the most common interactions were sleep period using the pillow with 66,47%, followed by category Out of bed with 25,32% and followed the category the activities and using the pillow with 6,95%. Findings of this study allow suggesting what graphical interface designers must seek as new strategies and solutions for behavior change in posture in bed, exploring other peripheral equipment for sleep position; or, at least, to improve the posture of the participants when using the number and the placement of the pillow in bed and if these Ergonomic changes can influence the reduction in back pain indications.
  • Learning to use R2L in Portugal
Publication . Gouveia, Carlos A. M.; Alexandre, Marta; Caels, Fausto Felix Geert; Claire Acevedo, Claire; Rose, David; Whittaker, Rachel
This chapter reports on the use of the genre-based literacy pedagogy Reading to learn (R2L) in the cultural, educational and linguistic context of Portugal. R2L was officially introduced during the European Comenius project Teacher Learning for European Literacy Education (TeL4ELE). Following the project, R2L was introduced in pre-service teacher training programmes and in different university courses as part of their literacy development strategies. R2L workshops have been conducted in different parts of the country and there is a growing body of research on the use of R2L in different fields and educational settings (articles, book chapters, theses). Working closely with teachers and school boards, and creating interdisciplinary teams have proven to be crucial in overcoming initial resistance by professionals who claim to possess prior knowledge of genre principles (language teachers) and by those who fear R2L will compromise content teaching (subject teachers). Lack of materials on genre pedagogy, and the pre-existence of genre-related terminology in the Portuguese curriculum has led to a project to describe and exemplify the genres of the Portuguese curriculum and to promote dialogue between different genre-based approaches in use in Portugal.
  • Pre-service teachers integrated music teaching and learning experiences through ocean literacy
    Publication . Milhano, Sandrina
This study adopts a qualitative case study design to understand how pre-service teachers integrate music into interdisciplinary learning experiences in primary schools. This theme addresses the vital role of teacher training in fostering links between knowledge, pedagogical theory and practice and pupils' learning outcomes. Reinforcing integrated music approaches in teachers' professional development fosters learning and empowers pupils with holistic and global perspectives of the world and themselves. The study involved pre-service teachers designing and implementing lessons for 6- to 8-year-old pupils, focusing on ocean literacy through interdisciplinary approaches. Data were collected over one semester and comprised 18 critical reports collaboratively produced by student teachers, with lesson plans, reflective writings, and pupil work samples. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis, with a deductive approach that critically examined the experiences of the pre-service teacher in providing structured, coherent and articulated lessons in primary schools. Results revealed different solutions and approaches for music integration, highlighting challenges faced during implementation, and showcasing practices, content and processes experienced to enrich pupils' learning. These findings provide insights into music integration processes and highlight the role of reflexive and critical thinking in teacher education programs to prepare generalist teachers for holistic and interdisciplinary pedagogical approaches.
