- The role of higher education institutions (HEIs) in the path to sustainability: analysis of sustainable development goals (SDGs) from a scientific perspectivePublication . Bautista-Puig, Núria; Aleixo, Ana Marta; Sanz-Casado, Elias; Azeiteiro, UlissesThe sustainable development goals (SDGs) are presented as the promising and critical success to respond to the societal challenges in worldwide. It supposes a change in comparison with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs): all countries and all stakeholders (e.g. enterprises, organizations, civil society, policy-makers…) need to be involved (lemma ‘No one left behind") in the path towards sustainability (Brown, 2006). On this regard, as Salvia (2019) stated success of the SDGs will depend on the strong collaboration between the different actors. In 2017, Walter Leal Filho, Ulisses Miranda Azeiteiro, et al. (2017) refers to the SDGs as an opportunity to encourage sustainability research, reviewing the importance given to the research of the SDGs', which SDGs have already been implemented and in which countries. One of the central actors is higher education institutions (HEIs) who have the lead to respond to this enormous challenge. In this regard, they should be leaders in the search for solutions and alternatives to current environmental problems and agents of change (Hesselbarth and Schaltegger, 2014). The University within the framework of the 2030 Agenda can collaborate through teaching, research, knowledge transfer and innovation in promoting policies of sustainability and commitment not only to the environment but also to the achievement of all other sustainable goals (e.g. eradication of hunger and poverty extreme, health and well-being, quality education…). On this regard, authors such as Leal (2019) states that it is important to align universities with the research on SDGs. About this pillar, one way to analyze how universities are doing research on this topic is through bibliometric studies. There are different studies that analyze sustainability or sustainable development (Hassan and Zhu, 2014, Olawumi and Chan, 2018) as well as in universities (Bizerril, 2018). However, few studies have analyzed the production specifically on SDGs at Universities. Nakamura (2019) analyzes 2,800 documents related to the SDGs, as well as topic analysis. On the other hand, Bautista-Puig (2019) analyzes the core of scientific production on the MDGs and the SDGs with 4,532 2 documents and highlights the growth in the last 4 years, which coincides with the launch of the SDGs, in addition to the interrelations between the different SDGs. This study analyzes the scientific output of development goals research from 2000-2017 based on Web of Science, with the aim to map the global research of sustainability at HEIs. A total of 25,185 bibliographic records were analyzed. The purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive review of the literature of HEIs about the research that these institutions are doing related to MDGs and SDGs. This paper also analyzes the topics in which are involved based on keyword co-occurrence classification of the SDGs by creating an ad-hoc glossary. The findings reveal the important participation of HEIs on this research (85.71%) and an increase of participation over time (660 institutions in 2000-2005 to 1771 institutions involved in 2012-2017). In terms of specialization measured by an Activity Index (AI), some institutions present a higher production and a higher specialization on the topic; however, others present less production but higher specialization. Regarding the topics, health (especially in developing countries), women and socio-economic aspects are the most prominent ones. Moreover, it is observed an increase of the topics related to the launch of the SDGs, including topics such as governance or policy denoting the increase of the political interest on those issues. This study provides an overview of how Universities are doing research on SDGs to respond to major societal challenges and could be useful for the policymakers in order to promote the research agenda on this topic.
- Student receptiveness to Kahoot! in higher educationPublication . Pires, A.; Pais, S.; Chagas, L.The use of technology in higher education has been increasing in the past few years and new online tools have emerged for very different purposes. Kahoot! is an example of a platform that can be used for reviewing content and motivating students for learning. Our research is based on data from a quantitative survey conducted in the previous school year and the participants were 86 undergraduate students from a Portuguese higher education institution. The preliminary results of the survey showed that students are very receptive to this tool and highly recommend it, as it promotes motivation. Other studies have shown that higher education students are usually receptive to web tools and consider technology can positively impact learning. To better understand students’ responses to the platform, in this study we aim at analysing the results according to area of study and investigating new correlations between variables, specifically (i) gender vs receptiveness to Kahoot!, (ii) gender vs recommendation of its use and (iii) technology readiness vs receptiveness to Kahoot!.

- Composite material for thermal insulation based on moss raw materialPublication . Bakatovich, Aliaksandr; Gaspar, FlorindoThe demand for thermal insulation materials composed of sustainable raw materials remains a challenge. The substances used in the manufacture of thermal insulation materials may also, under certain conditions, have a beneficial effect on the insulated surfaces, the environment, and the human or animal body, in particular by the ability to absorb moisture and biocidal properties. Ecological insulation materials of vegetable raw materials are increasingly widespread. Most of the time, these materials are made from flax, hemp or wood fibres, agglomerated with a binder. The objective of this work was to determine the possibility of using Sphagnum moss as a fibre in thermal insulation panels. To carry out this study, several compositions were developed for thermal insulation boards based on moss, rye straw and reed, using liquid glass as a binder. The specimens were tested for thermal conductivity, and strength to compression and bending. Best results were achieved on panels of moss and straw with thermal conductivity of 0.044–0.046 W/(m.K) at a density of 156–190 kg/m3, without shrinking during drying and a compression strength between 0.20 and 0.21 MPa. Electronic microscopy of rye straw and reed stems made it possible to examine the presence of outer and inner parts in the structure, which affect the thermal and strength characteristics. With the use of natural raw materials from plants and agricultural production residues, an effective and ecologically safe rigid board insulation was obtained, which has biocidal properties and has no analogues in the market for the construction of thermal insulation materials.

- Vocational teaching: use of information and communication technologies by students outside the school contextPublication . Sousa, A.This article presents the main results of a study about the use that students of the vocational courses in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) make of the technologies outside the school context. This research intends to evaluate the degree of integration of ICT in the lifestyles of the students of vocational courses in the scope of ICT, in order to understand the extent to which ICT enriches, modifies or changes behaviors, learning modes and habits. The methodology used consisted in the application of a questionnaire in the classroom to 314 students from 4 schools, who had a large number of vocational courses in ICT, preferably with three years of secondary school (10th, 11th and 12th grade), which would guarantee greater diversity and accumulated experience and a high number of students to inquire. The questionnaire survey was previously validated by the General Board Direção Geral de Inovação e Desenvolvimento Curricular (DGIDC) and after it was applied the data was treated and analysed with SPSS 19. With the results obtained it was concluded that the preferential context of ICT use by students is at home. Although half of the students report using the computer and the Internet, both for educational and recreational activities, the rest use ICT mainly for leisure activities. Gender analysis shows that girls are less active in using these media for recreational practices than boys, but more active in communicational practices. Students in the most advanced years of schooling assume a more diversified and enriching use of ICT for school purposes, provided by learning the content of their courses. However, the use modalities are still not very enriching, privileging recreational and communicational practices, despite the field of study of their courses. The opportunities and potential of the use of ICT in the study method are not yet used to make a more effective learning, being its use by the activities more common and transversal to other students of different courses, as is the case of online research for essays or downloading worksheets and exercises. Understanding how students use ICT outside the school context makes it possible to verify whether learning about the use of technology in schools is enriching and whether it is transferred to other places outside the school by modifying or changing behavior, learning modes and habits. This is all the more important in view of the fact that vocational courses, in this specific case, courses in the field of ICT, have the main objective of forming skilled labor for the labor market, capable of responding to the requirements of a society of the information and knowledge.
- Migration and integration processes in PortugalPublication . Vieira, Ricardo; Vieira, Ana Maria de Sousa Neves; Marques, José Carlos Laranjo MarquesMigration is generally described as a process that is nationally specific and that have features common to several countries. This has been shown by several authors through comparative research that compares the migration process of the same immigrant group to several countries (among others, Engbersen, Snel, & de Boom, 2010) or which scrutinises the migration realities of different countries (Zimmermann, 2005). Most of these studies are about geographically near countries, which are part of the same political system (the EU), and that have an established (albeit differentiated) welfare system. These proximities (geographical, but also political and social) allowed the authors of these studies to conceptualise the existence of several migration models or regimes: the southern European model (Baldwin-Edwards, 2012), the Iberian model of Migration (Malheiros, 2012); the intra-EU mobility regime (Engbersen et al., 2017). These migratory regimes are intertwined by migrant integration models or by different approaches to increasingly diverse populations. Although these are often identified as ‘national models of integration’, they do not fail to integrate the developments that have been recorded in the last decades in the international contexts in which the countries are inserted. Throughout the present text, the Portuguese experience in dealing with immigrant integration is used to reflect on the development of intercultural policies and practices, and on the role of intercultural mediation. The article is structured in the following way: in the introductory section we will review the discussion on interculturalism; in a second section the Portuguese immigration context will be presented; in a third section the integration of immigrants in the country will be analysed, given special attention to the development of policies that support immigrants’ integration process. In the fourth section, the role of intercultural mediation for the integration of immigrants will be considered.
- Protein Nanocarriers for Targeted Drug Delivery for Cancer TherapyPublication . Kariduraganavar, Mahadevappa Y.; Heggannavar, Geetha B.; Amado, Sandra; Mitchell, Geoffrey R.This chapter describes how proteins can be used to provide effective targeted nanocarriers for drugs to target tumors. This approach offers an exciting framework for cancer therapies in the future, allowing multiple therapeutic agents and other functions to be combined in the same particle and ensuring a lower toxicity for the patient. The use of proteins provides a rich library of functional molecules to exploit in this methodology. The role of computer simulation to identify the best combination of protein, ligand, and drugs is highlighted.
