- An experimental analysis of grandfathering versus dynamic auctioning in the EU ETSPublication . Botelho, Anabela; Fernandes, Maria Eduarda; Pinto, LígiaPurpose – This study constitutes a first attempt to experimentally test the performance of a 100% auction versus a 100% free allocation of CO2 permits under the rules and parameters that mimic the EU ETS (imperfect competition, uncertainty in emissions' control, and allowing banking), with environmental targets more restrictive than the current ones but foreseeable for the near future. Methodology/approach – Two experimental treatments were run to achieve our goal. Both included the rules and the parameters that parallel the EU ETS structure, the only difference being the rule for the primary allocation of permits. Findings – Our experimental results indicate that the EU ETS has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions, achieving targets considerably more restrictive than the current ones at high efficiency levels, both with auctioned and free emission permits. Practical implications – Concerns about undue scarcity, and corresponding high prices, in secondary markets generated by a primary auction market are not warranted under the proposed dynamic auction format. This adds arguments favoring auctioning over grandfathering as the rule for the initial allocation of emission permits in the EU ETS. Originality/value of chapter – This study implements a theoretically appropriate auction format for the primary allocation of emission permits (the Ausubel (2004) auction) and incorporates a first attempt to include in the analysis measures of the risk preferences of subjects participating in emission permits experiments. These characteristics are for the first time implemented under a complex experimental design (including uncertainty of emission abatement, and banking), trying to parallel the EU ETS trading environment.
- An experimental analysis of grandfathering vs dynamic auctioning in the EU ETSPublication . Botelho, Anabela; Fernandes, Maria Eduarda; Pinto, LígiaThis study constitutes a first attempt to experimentally test the performance of a 100% auction versus a 100% free allocation of CO2 permits under the rules and parameters that mimic the EU ETS (imperfect competition, uncertainty in emissions’ control, and allowing banking). It also incorporates a first attempt to include in the analysis measures of the risk preferences of subjects participating in emission permits experiments. Another distinctive feature of this study is the implementation of a theoretically appropriate auction format for the primary allocation of emission permits. Our experimental results indicate that the EU ETS has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions, achieving targets considerably more restrictive than the current ones at high efficiency levels, both with auctioned and free emission permits. Auctioning, however, reveals a clear potential to do better than grandfathering the initial allocation of permits. In addition, the results reveal that concerns about undue scarcity, and corresponding high prices, in secondary markets generated by a primary auction market are not warranted under the proposed dynamic auction format.
Foram identificados 130 artigos, tendo a maioria sido publicados no: Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, Accounting Forum, Accounting e Organizations and Society.
- Analysing applicant's attraction with social networks on both sides of the table: those who recruit and those who are recruited have a compatible performance?Publication . Gomes, Daniel; Figueiredo, Inês; Ribeiro, NeuzaApplicant’s attraction in recruitment is perhaps one of the best known areas that integrate knowledge from different fields of research, such as the Hrm, Communication and Work and Organizational Psychology. Under this thematic, the social networks (SN) began to be understood as useful for recruitment purposes. The main objective of this research is to describe and understand the compatibility between the practices of recruiters regarding applicant’s attraction using SN and the expectations of the latter ones when looking for jobs via SN. This work has allowed us to generate a set of considerations regarding the theoretical, empirical and practical levels.
- Analysis of Family SMEs Default Risk: the Portuguese CasePublication . Lisboa, Inês; Costa, Magali; Santos, FilipaThis work aims to study the default risk of family SMEs (small and medium enterprises) in Portugal, more specifically in the Leiria region. For this purpose, a panel data of 2,658 firms over the period 2012-2017 is analyzed. Using an ex-ante classification of defaulting, results suggest that there are more compliant firms and the number of defaulting firms have decreased over the period analyzed. Then, using a logit regression technique and six variables to predict default obtained through the stepwise methodology, results show that defaulting firms compared to compliant firms are usually younger, with higher difficulties in generating return and in being efficient, and more indebted. The Z’-score model was used as a robustness test, and results suggest that this model is inaccurate to the present reality and this specific sample. Therefore, new coefficients were estimated to increase the model’s efficiency. The proposed and the modified Z’-score models have an accuracy of 88.74% and 85.49%, respectively.
- Applications of Blockchain Technology to Higher Education Arena: A Bibliometric AnalysisPublication . Reis-Marques, Carlos; Figueiredo, Ronnie; Neto, Miguel de CastroResearch related to blockchain is rapidly gaining importance in the higher education. This opportunity collaborates with a proposal for a review of papers on the main blockchain topic. The bibliometric analysis included 61 peer-reviewed articles published in the Scopus database during the period of 2016 to 2021. This paper offers the identification of gaps in the literature enabling studies on the subject in higher education. The article identifies the main applications of blockchain technology in higher education around the world, as well as suggests future investigations. For further scientific investigation, we propose the operationalization of each of the researched approaches, especially combining the blockchain relationship, artificial intelligence, digital innovation, digital maturity, and customer experience in higher education.
- Assessing an agri-food development strategy : a bi-regional input–output model with resource-constrained sectorsPublication . Cruz, Luís; Ramos, Pedro N.; Barata, Eduardo; Sargento, AnaUneven regional development is widely recognised. This paper explores the effectiveness of a regional development strategy based on the agri-food sector expansion in a laggard agriculture dependent region. We use a bi-regional rectangular Input– Output model, explicitly taking into account the methodological and policy implications of resource-constrained products. Results confirm that local transformation of agricultural products has a positive but limited effect, due to land restrictions and impact leaks to the more complex and developed region. The regional development strategy would be more effective if it focuses instead on non-tradable products or not so dependent on natural resources.
