- Alternative heavy tailed models in seismologyPublication . Felgueiras, Miguel; Martins, João; Santos, RuiGreat earthquakes are commonly considered as the ones with moment magnitude (Mw ) above or equal to 8.0. Since these earthquakes can destroy entire communities located near the epicentre, the search of physical laws that explain the energy released by them is an important issue. There is a connection between the radiated energy of an earthquake, its magnitude and its seismic moment (M 0). Thence, when fitting a heavy or an extremely heavy tailed distribution to a seismic moment dataset, we are in fact adjusting a mathematical model which explains the amount of energy released by these great seisms. Therefore, the main goal of this work is to study the more appropriated Pareto based models (the most used family in this field) when explaining the seismic moment of the great earthquakes. With this purpose in mind, we selected two different catalogs that accommodate recent events and are considered more accurate than other catalogs used in previous works. We conclude that the traditional Pareto distribution remains a good choice to deal with this kind of data, but Log-Pareto lead to higher p-values and Location-scale Pareto is better fitted to the biggest events.
- Application of Renewable Energy—The Case of San Tomé IslandPublication . Ceita, Ludcelma de; Manso, Ricardo; Eugénio, TeresaIn the current context, the energy sector is one of the most important strategic points for the economic transformation of any society. Access to energy is a universal human right and a concern of the state. Whatever national development strategy is defined or implemented, it will always require measures to promote access to energy for all. Although the strong growth of renewable energies worldwide is evident, there are still few studies on their applicability in developing countries. The aim of this study is to contribute to energy sustainability in an emerging country where renewable energies have been little analysed and developed. The country analysed is São Tomé and Príncipe (STP). This paper develops a study on the application of renewable energy, energy sustainability, and clean electricity generation as challenges of the present and ways forward. Aware of the potential of natural resources on the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe, the study follows the following methodology: first phase: a preliminary study to describe the current energy situation on the island; second phase: presentation of a simulation on the use of available resources that has a direct impact on minimising the consumption of fossil fuels on the islands and on the country’s dependence on foreign fuel imports. As a result, the following proposal is made: Utilisation of photovoltaic solar energy with the help of agro-voltaic systems and floating panels, a biomass plant and a transition to electromobility with the help of electric vehicles as energy storage and means of transport.
- Aprendizagem Interorganizacional e Capacidade Absortiva: Investigação em Pequenas e Médias EmpresasPublication . Cassol, Alessandra; Marietto, Márcio L.; Tonial, Graciele; Werlang, Nathalia B.Objetivo: Esta pesquisa analisa a influência da aprendizagem interorganizacional (AIO) sobre a capacidade absortiva (Acap), potencial (Pacap) e realizada (Racap), no ambiente de pequenas e médias empresas (PMEs). Originalidade/valor: O estudo contribuiu para o entendimento e a expansão das pesquisas da AIO operacionalizadas por meio dos elementos da Acap. A compreensão desses elementos é fundamental para o desenvolvimento de novas competências das PMEs brasileiras e/ou de países emergentes, imersas em setores dinâmicos e de alta mobilidade tecnológica, para se adaptarem e desenvolverem novas capacidades dinâmicas. Design/metodologia/abordagem: A pesquisa foi realizada por meio de uma survey em uma amostra de 215 PMEs do setor de tecnologia da informação e comunicação (TIC) no estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil. Os dados foram analisados a partir da técnica de modelagem de equações estruturais. Resultados: Os resultados demonstraram que as relações de AIO são capazes de influenciar o desenvolvimento de novas competências e possuem forte influência sobre o desenvolvimento da Acap. A habilidade das organizações em adquirir, assimilar, aplicar e internalizar os conhecimentos disponíveis no setor, por meio de relações interorganizacionais, foi fundamental para a adaptação e sobrevivência.
- Bibliometric Analysis of Sustainable Indicators in AgribusinessPublication . Monteiro, Sónia; Quesado, Patrícia; Ribeiro, Verónica; Fernandes, Maria Eduarda; Eugénio, Teresa; Costa, João; Rodrigues, Hugo; Tomás, MarinaThe aim of this paper is to analyze the scientific production in the last decade (2011–2022) related to sustainable indicators (environmental, economic, social and ESG—Environmental, Social and Governance) in agribusiness. As methodology, a bibliometric study was carried out on articles from Scopus database. Afterwards, the most cited articles, journals and countries were analyzed, as well as a thematic analysis of the keywords. Results indicate that research on sustainable indi- cators of agribusiness has increased over time. In last years, the number of scientific papers on these topics has been increasing, probably associated with the approval of the United Nations for Sustainable Development (known as 2030 Agenda, approved in 2015). Italy is the country with most publications, the highest number of citations, and with the largest collaboration network. Most papers are published in 2 journals of higher impact and LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) is cited as the most usual method to assess the impact of business. Regarding the indicators to evaluate the sustain- ability of agribusiness, there is a greater predominance of environmental indicators compared to economic and social indicators.
- Building Strategic Capabilities in Brazilian FirmsPublication . Fleury, Maria Tereza Leme; Calixto, Cyntia Vilasboas; Frias Pinto, Cláudia Sofia; Fleury, AfonsoIn this chapter, we highlight the strategic capabilities that have enabled six Brazilian companies to achieve competitive advantage. We selected firms from different industries and stages of internationalization in order to show a broad perspective of local and international successful firms. WEG and Fanen developed technological capabilities associated to both world-class manufacturing and product innovation, whereas Stefanini and Integration have consolidated knowledge about servicing emerging markets. Grendene’s production and operations are its key capabilities for international operations through exports, while innovative design and processes support their strategy in the local markets. The key capabilities of Dr.Consulta are entrepreneurship and innovation. In sum, due to highly turbulent institutional and economic environment, Brazilian firms have had to develop some specific capabilities, especially those related to financial management and organizational flexibility.
- Circular Economy and Sustainability: What Are They Saying About It? – A Literature ReviewPublication . Costa, Berta; Rodrigues, SusanaCircular economy (CE) and sustainability are two interrelated con- cepts that are increasingly gaining attention in the fields of business, economics, and environmental studies. Although both concepts share similarities as they both aim to reduce the negative impact of human activities on the environment and promote sustainable development, they have predominantly been addressed sep- arately as two independent areas of knowledge, and continue to be ambiguous. Their relationship in literature has not been clarified, which may be obfuscating their overall usage. The aim of this article is to clarify the concepts of circular economy and sustainability, to examine how these two constructs have evolved in the last decades, and to identify their similarities and differences. In this regard a specific literature review was performed. For this purpose, 48 publications were identified, and a content analysis was conducted. Based on the aforementioned literature review, key findings relatively to circular economy and sustainability are presented.
- Comparative Cases From Portuguese Social Innovation Public PolicyPublication . Ciccarino, Irene; Rodrigues, SusanaInnovation generally involves poorly structured problems, which do not have an obvious solution within the knowledge available. The solution is usually evolutionary, resulting from several attempts and refinements. Social innovation aims to address social problems and needs, which happen regardless of economic odds. This innovation can be an answer to a social need by embedded solutions and by different stakeholders' mobilization to sustain effective social change. It also can be about the best resource use or cost reduction, mainly the social ones. Portugal has developed a pioneer public policy to encourage entrepreneurship, social innovation and boost the social investment market. The Portugal Social Innovation Programme (PIS), links investors and social entrepreneurial initiatives (SEI) and offers support to structure SEI in a sustainable way by providing resources and network. Insofar SEIs accomplish the contracted results, PIS rewards their private investors. Thence public and private capital share risks, and the public capital is driven to the most effective initiatives. PIS enables the experimentation needed for innovation building and increases the chance of public services improvement, contributing to enhance the welfare-state. In this sense, this research goal is to describe three revealing cases of SEIs supported by PIS, highlighting innovation features and contextualizing theory. The data was collected by 3 semi-structured in-depth interviews which responses could be found in a database with 120 cases built by an online survey. The thematic content analysis was conducted applying codes from theory and PIS’s investment criteria. Then cases were compared to understand the outcomes of investment criteria and to examine theoretical features. The study discusses PIS investment criteria and presents SEIs types endorsed by it. Thus, it helps disclosure and stakeholders' expectations management. It also enables understanding the relationship between innovation, business model sustainability, and social value creation in the Portuguese context. The SEIs analyzed endorses PIS's innovative potential in building networks and foster the entrepreneurial ecosystem. This study also poses a new way to identify and compare different kinds of social values paving the way for a less subjective and tricky assessment routine.
- O efeito do greenwashing no consumo ético mediado pela confusão verde e pelo ódio à marcaPublication . Santos, Célia; Coelho, Arnaldo; Marques, AlziraO greenwashing verifica-se quando as empresas enganam os consumidores quanto às suas práticas ambientais ou benefícios dos seus produtos/serviços. Esta investigação centra-se nos impactos dessas práticas no consumo ético e analisa como a confusão verde e o ódio à marca atuam como mediadores nessa relação. Baseado em informações recolhidas por meio de questionário aplicado numa amostra de 420 consumidores portugueses, foi realizado estudo confirmatório, quantitativo e transversal (ou de corte único). A análise foi conduzida através de um modelo de equações estruturais com o software SmartPLS. Os resultados sugerem que o greenwashing aumenta a confusão verde entre os consumidores, dificultando a correta interpretação de aspetos ambientais de um produto/serviço. Além disso, o greenwashing gera emoções negativas extremas, como o ódio à marca. Os resultados também demostram que os consumidores, quando percecionam práticas de greenwashing por parte de uma empresa/marca tendem a deixar de comprar os seus produtos/serviços, optando por alternativas mais éticas e responsáveis. Foi estabelecida relação positiva direta e indireta entre greenwashing e consumo ético. Esta investigação avança o estado da arte, que carece de estudos relacionados com as consequências das práticas de greenwashing e elucida as empresas da necessidade de eliminar essas atividades enganadoras e irresponsáveis. Limitações e oportunidades de estudo futuras são abordadas.
- Estimation of prevalence in rare disease using pooled samplesPublication . Martins, J. P.; Santos, R.; Felgueiras, M.The use of pooled samples for screening infected individuals is a known procedure to reduce costs. In an estimation problem, the aim is only to determine how many individuals are infected instead of determining who is infected (classification problem). In that setting, our goal was to compare the performance of using one or two-dimensional arrays. The best performance was established according to one of the following criteria: minimizing the number of individuals or the number of tests required to attain a certain estimate accuracy. It is observed that when we want to minimize the number of individuals used, the two-dimensional procedures have a little advantage over the one-dimensional procedures. However, when the major concern is the cost, the one-dimensional procedures clearly outperform the two-dimensional procedures.
- Examining the Role of Perceived Source Credibility on Social Media Influencer’s Ascribed Opinion LeadershipPublication . Crespo, Cátia Fernandes; Tille, MelanieBuilding on the theoretical framework of the source credibility model, this study aims to investigate how the different dimensions of social media influencer’s (SMI) perceived source credibility, respectively expertise, attractiveness, and trustworthiness impact on influencers’ ascribed opinion leadership, and ultimately affect social media users’ purchase intentions. A cross-cultural analysis focused on the German and Portuguese markets of Instagram users was implemented. Data were collected with an online survey distributed in Germany and Portugal, resulting in a sample of 467 participants, 214 from Germany and 253 from Portugal. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling with partial least squares (PLS-SEM). Findings confirmed that expertise and attractiveness enhance the influencer’s ascribed opinion leadership. On the contrary, trustworthiness does not influence ascribed opinion leadership. The influencer’s ascribed opinion leadership promotes purchase intention. This study advances influencer marketing literature by deepening our understanding on the influence of online opinion leaders on social media user’s behavioral intentions.
