- Development of a performance-based toolkit of the treatable traits of functioning in hospitalised patients with exacerbation of COPD: a survey-based study protocolPublication . Leonardi, Naiara Tais; Kawakami, Débora Mayumi Oliveira; Cruz, Joana; Burtin, Chris; Borghi-Silva, Audrey; Mendes, Renata GonçalvesBackground The management of COPD has been based on the premise of identifying problems that guide personalised treatment based on a multidimensional assessment, known as treatable traits. Exacerbation of COPD (ECOPD) results in physical and functional impairments, limitation of daily activities and negative impact on patients’ quality of life and prognosis. In this context, identifying treatable traits in patients with ECOPD is essential to properly guide individualised patient care. There is a need to develop a performance-based toolkit to identify the main treatable traits of functioning in hospitalised patients with ECOPD. Methods and analysis This is a study protocol of a survey method observational study to develop a performance-based toolkit. The study will include the following steps: 1) definition of treatable traits by both physiotherapists who provide or have provided care to hospitalised patients with ECOPD on a regular basis, and patients who have experienced at least one ECOPD which required hospitalisation; 2) selection of the most appropriate measures (markers) for each treatable trait based on established criteria and a previous systematic review; and 3) implementation of the toolkit in a pilot/feasibility study with hospitalised patients with ECOPD. Conclusion The development of a feasible performance-based toolkit with the best markers for each key treatable trait of functioning in hospitalised patients with ECOPD will make it possible to create individualised patient care for the specific demands of these patients.

- Unveiling the Cultivation of Nostoc sp. under Controlled Laboratory ConditionsPublication . Mouga, Teresa; Pereira, Jéssica; Moreira, Vitória; Afonso, CléliaCyanobacteria, photoautotrophic Gram-negative bacteria, play a crucial role in aquatic and terrestrial environments, contributing significantly to fundamental ecological processes and displaying potential for various biotechnological applications. It is, therefore, critical to identify viable strains for aquaculture and establish accurate culture parameters to ensure an extensive biomass supply for biotechnology purposes. This study aims to establish optimal laboratory batch culture conditions for Nostoc 136, sourced from Alga2O, Coimbra, Portugal. Preliminary investigations were conducted to identify the optimal culture parameters and to perform biomass analysis, including protein and pigment content. The highest growth was achieved with an initial inoculum concentration of 1 g.L−1, using modified BG11 supplemented with nitrogen, resulting in a Specific Growth Rate (SGR) of 0.232 ± 0.017 µ.day−1. When exposed to white, red, and blue LED light, the most favourable growth occurred under a combination of white and red LED light exhibiting an SGR of 0.142 ± 0.020 µ.day−1. The protein content was determined to be 10.80 ± 2.09%. Regarding the pigments, phycocyanin reached a concentration of 200.29 ± 30.07 µg.mL−1, phycoerythrin 148.29 ± 26.74 µg.mL−1, and allophycocyanin 10.69 ± 6.07 µg.mL−1. This study underscores the influence of light and nutrient supplementation on the growth of the Nostoc biomass.
- Consumers’ Acceptance and Willingness to Pay for Innovative and Sustainable Food – an Exploratory StudyPublication . C., João Maurício; Fernandes, Maria EduardaThe agricultural sector is currently facing several challenges, and needs to evolve to a more sustainable system. Consumers have a major role to play in this transformation. In this sense, this study aims to explore Portuguese consumers’ receptiveness and willingness to pay (WTP) for innovative and more sustainable food. Particularly, for apples produced in an innovative and sustainable way, making using of algae from the Portuguese coast. Additionally, the impact of information provided to consumers about the consequences of consuming this new product, on their receptiveness and willingness to pay, is tested: focusing on health benefits of the new product vs. on the environmental benefits. To this end, an online questionnaire was conducted in Portugal in July 2022. From a sample of 411 valid answers and 396 apple consumers, a wide majority (86.9%) were receptive to this innovative and sustainable apples and was willing to pay a price premium of 0.35 e/kg compared to the conventional apples (average price of 1.95 e/kg for sustainable apples, compared to 1.60 e/kg for conventional apples). This WTP was not influenced by the type of information provided in terms of benefits of the new product (health vs. environment) but the acceptance for the innovative apple increased with the provision of information. Additionally, some respondent’s ecological consumption habits and socioeconomic characteristics demonstrated to be statistically significant for the WTP. These results indicate that consumers are aware of the need to move towards a more sustainable food sector and value this innovative (and more sustainable) apples.
- Bibliometric Analysis of Sustainable Indicators in AgribusinessPublication . Monteiro, Sónia; Quesado, Patrícia; Ribeiro, Verónica; Fernandes, Maria Eduarda; Eugénio, Teresa; Costa, João; Rodrigues, Hugo; Tomás, MarinaThe aim of this paper is to analyze the scientific production in the last decade (2011–2022) related to sustainable indicators (environmental, economic, social and ESG—Environmental, Social and Governance) in agribusiness. As methodology, a bibliometric study was carried out on articles from Scopus database. Afterwards, the most cited articles, journals and countries were analyzed, as well as a thematic analysis of the keywords. Results indicate that research on sustainable indi- cators of agribusiness has increased over time. In last years, the number of scientific papers on these topics has been increasing, probably associated with the approval of the United Nations for Sustainable Development (known as 2030 Agenda, approved in 2015). Italy is the country with most publications, the highest number of citations, and with the largest collaboration network. Most papers are published in 2 journals of higher impact and LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) is cited as the most usual method to assess the impact of business. Regarding the indicators to evaluate the sustain- ability of agribusiness, there is a greater predominance of environmental indicators compared to economic and social indicators.
- The Influence of Business Cycles on Corporate Performance: Evidence from Outdoor TourismPublication . Santos, Eleonora; Abreu, António; Pinto, Agostinho Sousa; Carvalho, Milena; Martins, SusanaTourism contributes substantially to economies and employment opportunities. In recent years, sustainable tourism has gained prominence, seeking to harmonize economic growth with environmental preservation and social equity. This concept revolves around minimizing tourism’s environmental impact while maximizing local community benefits. Consequently, assessing the economic sustainability of tourism firms becomes imperative for destinations aspiring to cultivate sustainable tourism practices, particularly in nature-based, cultural, and nautical activities. This study delves into the economic sustainability of outdoor tourism firms in Portugal, encompassing nature-based, cultural, and nautical activities, from 2013 to 2022 across diverse business cycles. Utilizing data from the National Tourism Registry and the SABI database, we scrutinize profitability and financial structures. Our findings underscore essential insights. Nature/adventure firms struggle to maintain consistent positive returns on assets, while cultural and nautical firms exhibit variable profitability linked to economic conditions. Nature/adventure firms display relatively strong current liquidity, hinting at potential financial resilience during economic downturns. Cultural firms consistently exhibit higher financial autonomy, indicative of distinct financial management practices. Debt ratios vary significantly among firms, reflecting diverse financing strategies and risk profiles. These findings hold implications for outdoor tourism sector managers and policymakers. Managers must prioritize risk management, financial strategies, and financing approaches to bolster financial resilience and long-term sustainability. Policymakers can offer targeted support and incentives to mitigate the adverse effects of business cycles, safeguarding the sector’s enduring viability.
- The Mediating Effect of Motivation between Internal Communication and Job SatisfactionPublication . Santos, Tânia Cristina Simões de Matos dos; Santos, E.; Sousa, Marlene; Oliveira, MárcioCommunication in organisations is essential for them to be competitive in a global world that is constantly changing. Internal communication especially can be a highly effective and useful strategic tool for improving organisational performance through employee motivation and satisfac tion. Based on a questionnaire survey completed by 426 employees of Portuguese organisations, this work aims to understand, using a partial least squares structural equation model, the importance of internal communication in the motivation and satisfaction of Portuguese employees. The results show that internal communication in organisations directly influences job satisfaction and also indirectly, through motivation at work, giving motivation at work the role of mediator. It is therefore important for Portuguese organisations to invest in effective internal communication strategies in order to promote employee motivation and satisfaction, recognising motivation as a key mediator in the relationship between internal communication and job satisfaction.
