- Harmonic Analysis on the Möbius GyrogroupPublication . Ferreira, MiltonIn this paper, we propose to develop harmonic analysis on the Poincaré ball B, a model of then-dimensional real hyperbolic space. The Poincaré ball B is the open ball of the Euclidean n-space $\bkR^n$ with radius t >0, centered at the origin of $\bkR^n$ and equipped with Möbius addition, thus forming a Möbius gyrogroup where Möbius addition in the ball plays the role of vector addition in $\bkR^n.$ For any t>0 and an arbitrary parameter $\sigma \in \bkR$ we study the $(\sigma,t)$-translation, the $(\sigma,t)$-convolution, the eigenfunctions of the $(\sigma,t)$-Laplace-Beltrami operator, the $(\sigma,t)$-Helgason Fourier transform, its inverse transform and the associated Plancherel's Theorem, which represent counterparts of standard tools, thus, enabling an effective theory of hyperbolic harmonic analysis. Moreover, when $t \rightarrow +\infty$ the resulting hyperbolic harmonic analysis on B tends to the standard Euclidean harmonic analysis on $\bkR^n,$ thus unifying hyperbolic and Euclidean harmonic analysis. As an application, we construct diffusive wavelets on B.

- Duchenne muscular dystrophy: Symptoms, management and prognosisPublication . Honório, SamuelA child with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) faces a childhood and adolescence with a disability that develops gradually. This book intends to expose the problems of children with DMD. The authors discuss situations related to the disease in an attempt to provide some quality and improvement of life for those affected since DMD is a degenerative disease which affects muscle. This book offers a historical study of muscular dystrophy. It also shows some profiles of excellent clinicians and scientists that have contributed to this book with a description of muscular dystrophy from the clinical picture, to the latest techniques in genetics. Also included in the chapters are resolutions of several approaches to DMD, like scales, in order to anticipate how to manage the disease. This book relates some techniques of moderate exercise, like Yoga and water exercises, that are compliable with some advantages in mobility. The book concludes with some current trends and what can be done in the future. This book can be a good read to everyone that is interested in DMD, and also for the ones who know or provide care for those with this terrible disease.
- Energy audit as an input for energy management and energy efficiency improvement in a gypsum manufacturing plantPublication . Bernardo, Hermano; Oliveira, Filipe Tadeu; Serrano, LuisThis paper aims at presenting the main results of an energy audit performed to a gypsum production plant, in Portugal, which due to the amount of energy consumed must comply with the Portuguese program SGCIE (Intensive Energy Consumption Management System). The program was created in 2008 to promote energy efficiency and energy consumption monitoring in intensive energy consuming facilities (energy consumption higher than 500 toe per year). Facilities operators are required to perform energy audits and take actions to draw up an action plan for energy efficiency, establishing targets for energy consumption reduction and greenhouse gases emissions indexes. An energy audit was carried out to identify potential energy conservation measures for improving energy efficiency, and also typical energy consumption patterns, sector/equipment load profiles and thermal equipment performance. This tool gives managers the information to support decision making on improving energy performance and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A number of tangible targets and measures were devised and set to be implemented in the next few years. Results show that there is a considerable potential for reduction in the energy consumption and greenhouse gases emissions of gypsum manufacturing plants. Here, as elsewhere in the industrial sector, energy efficiency can only be achieved through a continuous energy monitoring and management system.
- Quantification of upper limb kinetic asymmetries in front crawl swimmingPublication . Morouço, Pedro; Marinho, Daniel A.; Fernandes, Ricardo J.; Marques, Mário C.This study aimed at quantifying upper limb kinetic asymmetries in maximal front crawl swimming and to examine if these asymmetries would affect the contribution of force exertion to swimming performance. Eighteen high level male swimmers with unilateral breathing patterns and sprint or middle distance specialists, volunteered as participants. A load-cell was used to quantify the forces exerted in water by completing a 30. s maximal front crawl tethered swimming test and a maximal 50. m free swimming was considered as a performance criterion. Individual force-time curves were obtained to calculate the mean and maximum forces per cycle, for each upper limb. Following, symmetry index was estimated and breathing laterality identified by questionnaire. Lastly, the pattern of asymmetries along the test was estimated for each upper limb using linear regression of peak forces per cycle. Asymmetrical force exertion was observed in the majority of the swimmers (66.7%), with a total correspondence of breathing laterality opposite to the side of the force asymmetry. Forces exerted by the dominant upper limb presented a higher decrease than from the non-dominant. Very strong associations were found between exerted forces and swimming performance, when controlling the isolated effect of symmetry index. Results point that force asymmetries occur in the majority of the swimmers, and that these asymmetries are most evident in the first cycles of a maximum bout. Symmetry index stood up as an influencing factor on the contribution of tethered forces over swimming performance. Thus, to some extent, a certain degree of asymmetry is not critical for short swimming performance.
- Fast HEVC Encoding Decisions Using Data MiningPublication . Correa, Guilherme; Assunção, Pedro; Agostini, Luciano Volcan; Cruz, Luis A. da SilvaThe High Efficiency Video Coding standard provides improved compression ratio in comparison with its predecessors at the cost of large increases in the encoding computational complexity. An important share of this increase is due to the new flexible partitioning structures, namely the coding trees, the prediction units, and the residual quadtrees, with the best configurations decided through an exhaustive rate-distortion optimization (RDO) process. In this paper, we propose a set of procedures for deciding whether the partition structure optimization algorithm should be terminated early or run to the end of an exhaustive search for the best configuration. The proposed schemes are based on decision trees obtained through data mining techniques. By extracting intermediate data, such as encoding variables from a training set of video sequences, three sets of decision trees are built and implemented to avoid running the RDO algorithm to its full extent. When separately implemented, these schemes achieve average computational complexity reductions (CCRs) of up to 50% at a negligible cost of 0.56% in terms of Bjontegaard Delta (BD) rate increase. When the schemes are jointly implemented, an average CCR of up to 65% is achieved, with a small BD-rate increase of 1.36%. Extensive experiments and comparisons with similar works demonstrate that the proposed early termination schemes achieve the best rate-distortion-complexity tradeoffs among all the compared works.
- Effect of friction stir processing parameters on the microstructural and electrical properties of copperPublication . Leal, Rui; Galvão, I.; Loureiro, A.; Rodrigues, D. M.Friction stir processing (FSP) is an innovative technology, based on friction stir welding (FSW) operative principles, which can be used for changing locally the microstructure and the mechanical properties of conventional materials. In this work, the copper alloy C12200 was friction stir processed using two distinct tools, i.e. a scrolled and a conical shoulder tool, in order to promote different thermomechanical conditions inside the stirred volume, and consequently, varied post-processed microstructures. The influence of the tool geometry and tool rotation and traverse speeds on the microstructural and electrical properties of the processed copper alloy was analysed. The processing conditions were found to have an important influence on the electrical conductivity of the processed material. The differences in electrical conductivity were explained based on dislocations density effects. The effect of the dislocations density on electrical conductivity of the processed material was found to prevail over the effect of the grain boundaries.
- Interactive and Multimedia Contents Associated with a System for Computer-Aided AssessmentPublication . Paiva, Rui; Ferreira, S. Milton; Mendes, G. Ana; Eusébio, M. J. AugustoThis article presents a research study addressing the development, implementation, evaluation, and use of Interactive Modules for Online Training (MITO) of mathematics in higher education. This work was carried out in the context of the MITO project, which combined several features of the learning and management system Moodle, the computer-aided assessment for mathematics STACK, the mathematical software GeoGebra, several packages from the type-setting program LaTeX, and tutorial videos. A total of 1,962 students participated in this study. Two groups of students taking a calculus course were selected for a deeper analysis. With regard to usability and functionality, the results indicate that MITO scored well in almost all aspects, which is fundamental for their introduction into formal university courses. The analysis of the data reveals that the use of MITO educational contents by students mainly occurs about 1 week and a half prior to the evaluations. Moreover, there is a strong correlation between the results of online assessments on MITO in a continuous assessment model and the final grade on the course.
- Optimization of a perfusion bioreactor for tissue engineeringPublication .
