- A bibliometric model to analyze country research performance: SciVal topic prominence approach in tourism, leisure and hospitalityPublication . Cardoso, Lucília; Silva, Rui; Almeida, Giovana Goretti Feijó de; Santos, Luís LimaThis paper aimed to evaluate the Portuguese scientific production within Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality Management (TLHM). To this end, 572 papers from 51 peer-reviewed Scopus journals were mapped through a mixed bibliometric analysis method. The results indicated that Portugal has a significant TLHM research production, with an outstanding performance in terms of topic prominence percentile. Additionally, Portuguese TLHM research collaboration has increased significantly in recent years. It should be pointed out, however, that this production is significantly skewed towards tourism-specific studies rather than hospitality. This study presents a new bibliometric contribution by bringing the SciVal topic prominence and prominence percentile to the TLHM field and presenting a new country research performance model, indicating a new way to evaluate a country’s research performance. Additionally, this investigation featuring the overall structure of Portuguese TLHM research provides clear outlines to concerned bodies regarding researcher and institution performance and gives helpful and timely information to researchers, scholars, government managers, industry managers, and tourism and hospitality consultants.
- Demystifying neurotourism: An interdisciplinary approach and research agendaPublication . Cardoso, Lucília; Araújo, Arthur; Silva, Rui; Almeida, Giovana Goretti Feijó de; Campos, Filipa; Santos, Luís LimaThe academic discourse surrounding tourism's interdisciplinary approach has long piqued the interest of the scholarly community. More recently, attention has pivoted towards the intersection of neuroscience and neuromarketing within the realm of tourism, giving rise to the concept of “neurotourism”. This emergence requires a comprehensive elucidation of the relevance of neuromarketing and neuroscience to the field of tourism, thereby addressing the imperative to bridge existing knowledge gaps. In light of this, the present paper endeavours to fulfil this objective by synthesizing global research in this domain. The study adopts an interdisciplinary approach, employing a hybrid systematic review methodology that encompasses a literature review encompassing nine key indicators and a bibliometric analysis through co-word analysis of author keywords. In total, our investigation unearthed 45 papers from Scopus, each exploring the application of neuroscience and neuromarketing theories and methods within the context of tourism. Among these, three papers delve into the concept of neurotourism. In this paper, we underscore the deep connection between neuroscience, neuroscientific methodologies, and neuromarketing within the realm of tourism research. The outcomes of this research significantly enhance our comprehension of the current state of neurotourism research, revealing both existing voids and emerging areas of interest. Furthermore, this study introduces a pioneering methodological approach, fusing Scival topic prominence and hybrid systematic review techniques into bibliometric analysis. Ultimately, our findings illuminate a notable research lacuna, presenting a fertile terrain for prospective investigations. Additionally, we deliberate on current trends and propose directions for future research within the neurotourism landscape.
- Determinants of financial performance of non-profit organizationsPublication . Oliveira, Márcio; Silva, Rui; Sousa, Marlene; Santos, Tânia Cristina Simões de Matos dosFinancial performance can be seen as a determinant of organizational sustainability. Although non-profit organizations do not present as their main objective of obtaining profit but rather the fulfilment of a mission, this logic should not be very different for these organizations. Nevertheless, given this specificity, it is important to understand which major areas in managing these organizations effectively influence their financial performance. Thus, for the present study, and using a quantitative methodology, we analyzed strategic management, governance, human resource management and management of social services, promoted by the Holy Houses of Mercy, a non-profit organization with a stronger presence in portuguese society. It was possible to verify that, among these areas, only human resource management positively influences the financial performance of these institutions, that strategic management presents a negative influence and that governance and social responses do not present a direct relationship with financial performance.

- Management control procedures in multinationals versus subsidiariesPublication . Oliveira, Márcio; Rodrigues, Margarida; Silva, Rui; Oliveira, Cidália; Machado-Santos, C.Purpose: Much scientific research, and consequent contributions, has been done on multinationals versus subsidiaries in recent decades, particularly with regard to the management control system, a subject that remains current and relevant in the scientific literature in the management area. Thus, the aim of this study is to analyze the different perspectives of use of the management control system in organizations, in general terms, and a posteriori its importance in multinationals versus subsidiaries, through the inclusion of some variables (mechanisms for the exercise of control, commitment, autonomy) fundamental to the efficient and effective functioning of this system. Methodology: This is a theoretical and exploratory study between 2005 and 2014 focused on the accounting area magazines included in the ABS ranking (version 4). The selection of articles for the literature review for this topic was initially patented by the choice of four or five journals from the accounting area for the selection of scientific articles from the last five years. However, given the particularity of the chosen topic, it was necessary to extend the universe of journals to other areas of management, namely the area of international studies and business (journals according to the classification of the journals). It should be noted that in the other management areas not included, there were also articles on the subject, however, these did not cover the desired period of time. From research carried out in the most reputable journals in the management area, the time period from 2005 to 2014 was reviewed. However, in some of the selected journals no articles on the subject published in 2014 were identified. In summary, the following sample resulted from research on articles published by management journals: Accounting journals: Management Accounting Research, Accounting, Organization and Society, The British Accounting Review; International Business Review and Journal of International Management; Journal of Organizational Studies and Organization Science. In addition, we have included a further article from The British Accounting Review in 2009, as well as an article from The Organization Science in 2014. The latter was the basis for defining the subject of this work. The extension of the time period is due to the fact that this theme was reviewed in the literature in the 1990s, hence the change in the initial selection criteria. It should also be noted that articles in accounting journals on the management control system focus on the general perspective, fundamentally, and not on the perspective of multinationals versus subsidiaries, which also justifies the extension of the scope of the journals. Results: The results show that multinationals adopt several mechanisms to control their subsidiaries spread over several countries, such as expatriation, active participation among managers, training, sociability and technology transfer. However, they must focus on the commitment of local managers in the implementation of strategies Academy of Accounting and Financial Studies Journal Volume 25, Special Issue 3, 2021 2 1528-2635-25-S3-08 with critical and aggregate value, in the flexibility vis-à-vis the internal and external environment, so that their Control System is dynamic and interactive. Another important fact is the essence of autonomy, with the aim of sharing and transferring knowledge, regardless of the differences between the organizational and local culture between the country of origin and the host country. Given the complexity of the Relationships between the multinational and the subsidiaries, it is crucial to have a network relationship, as the network construction influences performance. Conclusions: This analysis has returned to the importance of management control systems for multinationals and their geographically dispersed subsidiaries, which require managers to be committed to the values of the parent company, to balance the autonomy of the subsidiary to avoid dynamic tensions. The empirical studies carried out only cover a specific geographical area (Japan, China, Korea, among others); Not all studies include all variables of the control system; Limited attention to the importance of social control.

- Performance of human resources in nonprofit organizations – What really counts?Publication . Oliveira, Márcio; Sousa, Marlene; Silva, Rui; Santos, Tânia Cristina Simões de Matos dosHuman resources are seen as an important asset for general associations, particularly for non-profit organizations. In the literature, it is possible to ascertain a set of factors influencing the performance of these resources, in general, in an organizational context. However, given the specificity of their missions, realizing that large management areas in this type of institutions influence their performance would significantly contribute. In practice, it was possible to implement assertive strategies to promote the performance of these employees. Thus, for the present study, and using a quantitative methodology, we started by analysing strategic management, financial management, governance and management of social services promoted by the Holy Houses of Mercy in Portugal. It was possible to ascertain that, among these areas, only financial management does not influence the performance of human resources in this type of institution. Recognizing the importance of the remaining areas, it was possible to present a set of indicators grouped into subdimensions, revealing important contributions to theory and practice. It was possible to conclude that, in a context of significant economic and social instability, such as the one we are currently experiencing, NPOs that seek to improve their level of human resource management should pay special attention to aspects related to strategy, governance and management of the social services they promote, as this is where the key factors for this performance improvement are found.
- A review of additive manufacturing studies for producing customized ankle-foot orthosesPublication . Silva, Rui; Veloso, António; Alves, Nuno; Fernandes, Cristiana; Morouço, PedroAnkle-foot orthoses (AFO) are prescribed to improve the patient’s quality of life. Supporting weak muscles or restraining spastic muscles leads to smoother and more stable locomotion. Commonly, AFO are made using thermoplastic vacuum forming, which requires a long time for production and has limited design options. Additive manufacturing (AM) can solve this problem, leading to a faster and cheaper solution. This review aimed to investigate what is the state-of-art using AM for AFO. Evaluating the used manufacturing processes, customization steps, mechanical properties, and biomechanical features in humans would provide significant insights for further research. The database searches combined AM and AFO with no year or publication type restrictions. Studies must have examined outcomes on human participants with the orthoses built by AM. Other types of orthotic devices or different manufacturing techniques were excluded. Nineteen studies met the inclusion criteria. As stated by having all studies conducted in the last nine years, this is a very recent domain. Different AM processes have been used, with the majority relying on Fused Deposition Modeling. Overall, the manuscripts’ quality is deficient, which is critical to promoting further studies with higher samples. Except for one paper, AM-printed AFO was comparable or superior to the thermoplastic vacuum forming AFO in mechanical tests, kinematics, kinetics, and participant feedback.
