- An overview of the effects of physical exercise programs on individuals with Intellectual and Developmental DisabilitiesPublication . Jacinto, Miguel; Ferreira, José Pedro; Monteiro, Diogo; Antunes, Raul; Campos, MJ; Matos, RuiBeing aware of the relevance of physical exercise in individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), we intend to conduct a brief review on the importance of regular physical exercise for this population. An approach will be taken in order to acknowledge the barriers to the high rates of sedentary lifestyles in this population, the potential benefits of physical exercise, and the essential aspects for a correct assessment, prescription, and implementation of these programs in the population with IDD, through a reflection supported by scientific evidence. The current overview aims to provide relevant information regarding the health benefits of physical exercise in individuals with IDD, as the basis for QoL promoting more active and healthier lifestyles, namely through structured physical exercise. In addition, it is also a useful tool for consultation by exercise professionals since adjusted indoor and outdoor exercise programs are listed.
- Analysis of Frailty Indices Based on Sociodemographic and Clinical Determinants in Older WomenPublication . Rodrigues, Filipe; Monteiro, Diogo; Susano Jacinto, Miguel Ângelo; Matos, Rui; Amaro, Nuno; Pocinho, Ricardo Filipe da Silva; Gordo, Sara; Dias Tavares da Silva, Sílvia Manuela; Antunes, RaulBackground: The aim of this study was to analyze levels of frailty, across physical, psychological, social, and overall dimensions, according to marital status, age, number of diagnosed illnesses, and number of medications taken in community-dwelling older women. Methods: The study included a total of 94 older women, aged between 60 and 89 years. All participants completed a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, as well as an instrument to measure physical, psychological, and social frailty, along with the total frailty score in the study participants. Group comparison test, such as the Kruskal–Wallis test, was applied. Results: Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in frailty were associated with marital status, clinical burden, and polypharmacy, with widowed/divorced individuals, those with more diagnosed diseases, and those taking more medications exhibiting higher physical and total frailty levels, while psychological frailty was notably higher in the oldest age group. Conclusions: The results indicate that physical and social interventions should be more relevant for older women with greater social isolation, as they may increase frailty indices and consequently the risk of hospitalization, institutionalization, and mortality.
- Assessment of Isokinetic Strength of Knee Extension/Flexion of Individuals With Intellectual Developmental Disabilities—Systematic Review With Protocol ProposalPublication . Jacinto, Miguel; Caseiro, André; Antunes, Raul; Monteiro, Diogo; Campos, MJ; Matos, Rui; Ferreira, José Pedro; Gomes, Beatriz BranquinhoMuscle performance is a crucial determinant of physical function in the daily lives of individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities (IDD), with lower strength levels often leading to loss of independence. The isokinetic dynamometer has been established as a reliable method for assessing muscle performance in this population. This article outlines the design of a protocol to be adopted to assess isokinetic knee strength in individuals with IDD. Using systematic review methodology, electronic searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science databases, including articles published between January 1990 and September 2022. The key terms were combined with the Boolean operator “AND” or “OR”. After the methodological process, 23 studies were included for analysis. The protocol proposal consists of 8 phases, covering previous considerations: (a) warm-up, (b) familiarization; (c) equipment adjustment, choosing the limb to evaluate and in what type of action (concentric and/or eccentric); (d) number of repetitions and sets; (e) the rest duration; (f) angular velocity to be tested; and (g) parameters for analysis. It is intended that this article provide insights into the development of a useful tool for the various stakeholders interested in assessing the isokinetic knee strength of individuals with IDD.

Tomé, Alexandra; Antunes, Raul; Monteiro, Diogo; Matos, Rui; Rodrigues, Filipe; Amaro, Nuno; Jacinto, MiguelThe literature clearly highlights the relationship between the levels of autonomy and independence of people with intellec-tual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their levels of physical fitness. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the effectsof a physical exercise program on the levels of autonomy, functionality in activities of daily living (ADL), and physical fitness of people with IDD. 17 participants completed the 9-week intervention, where parameters such as anthropometric data (height, weight, body mass index (BMI) and muscular mass (MM)), functionality in ADL (WHODAS 2.0) and data regarding physical fitness (handgrip test, Sit and Stand and timed up and go) before and after the intervention were evaluated. Significant improvements were found after the physical exercise intervention program in the functionality (self-reports: t=-2.19; p=0.03; η2=0,282and proxy reports: t=-2.64; p=0.01; η2=0,410) and body composition variables (BMI: t=-2.08; p=0.05; η2=0,254 and muscle mass;t=-1.94; p=0.05; η2=0,221), but not in the physical fitness variables. The intervention program seems to have contributed positively to improvingthe perception of autonomy in ADLs and body composition.
- Effect of a 12-Week Strength Training Program on Muscle Strength Measures of Institutionalized Older Adults—A Pilot StudyPublication . Pereira, Bernardo; Monteiro, Diogo; Matos, Rui; Jacinto, Miguel; Amaro, Nuno; Antunes, Raul; Rodrigues, FilipeInstitutionalized older adults are characterized by high levels of dependence and low levels of physical activity compared to those living in the community. This combination of factors leads to an increased risk of loss of muscle mass. Sarcopenia can be countered through strength training. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a strength training program on the physical fitness of institutionalized older adults. This study included a sample of 31 institutionalized older adults (20 females, 11 males) aged between 65 and 96 years (M = 81.64, SD = 8.67). Participants reported an average institutionalization duration of 2.43 years (SD = 2.20), ranging from half a year to ten years. A 12-week strength training program was implemented, with sessions held twice a week. Strength fitness was assessed through the following parameters: handgrip strength, upper limb muscular endurance, lower limb muscular endurance, agility and balance, body mass index, and waist circumference. The results demonstrated that a 12-week strength training program improved physical fitness in terms of lower limb muscular endurance, upper limb muscular endurance, agility, and dynamic balance (p < 0.05).
- Effects of combined training in individual with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trialsPublication . Jacinto, Miguel; Rodrigues, Filipe; Monteiro, Diogo; Diz, Susana; Sánchez, Raquel; Morales-Sánchez, Verónica; Matos, Rui; Amaro, Nuno; Antunes, RaulPurpose of the article: This study aims to evaluate the literature, peer-reviewed clinical trial investigating the effects of combined exercise interventions on individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.Materials and methods: Various databases, using various descriptors and Boolean operators were utilized. Results: Eight studies meet the eligibility criteria. Regarding the anthropometric measures/bodycomposition variable, the meta-analysis revealed that combined physical exercise did not have a significant effect (standard mean difference (SMD) = −0.16; 95% CI, −0.34 to 0.03; Z = 1.68; p = 0.09). For the lipid profile variable, the combined exercise interventions did not show a significant effect(SMD = −0.07; 95% CI, −0.43 to 0.29; Z = 0.38; p = 0.71). Combined exercise training had a significant effect on increasing functional capacity (SMD = 0.28; 95% CI, 0.01 to 0.54; Z = 2.03; p = 0.04),cardiorespiratory function (SMD = 0.80; 95% CI, 0.34 to 1.26; Z = 3.41; p ≤ 0.001), and strength (SMD =0.77; 95% CI, 0.45 to 1.08; Z = 4.78; p ≤ 0.001).Conclusions: Participants from the intervention group that took part in combined exercise trainings howed a higher probability of improving their functional, cardiorespiratory, and strength capacity compared to the control group.
