  • Research on Public Service Motivation and Leadership: A Bibliometric Study
    Publication . Marques, Tânia
Using a bibliometric approach, this quantitative study collects and analyses 61 publications on Public Service Motivation and Leadership simultaneously, within the public administration field, published in Web of Knowledge/SSCI database until 2018. This article seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the topics by complementing conventional qualitative literature reviews. The results demonstrate that, recently, a continuous increase of the research has occurred, and the US is the country driving the research. Thus, other parts of the globe should be cautious when adopting the conclusions of studies from such a different cultural context. Moreover, the transformational leadership research emerge from the results. Nevertheless, other leadership approaches are welcome, such as responsible leadership. Based on the review, the article suggests directions for further research endeavors.
  • Responsible leadership, organizational commitment, and work engagement: The mediator role of organizational identification
Publication . Gomes, Jorge F. S.; Marques, Tânia; Cabral, Constança
As a recent concept in leadership and organizational studies, responsible leadership is said to bring many benefits to organizations in all sectors. This statement is more theoretically grounded than empirically based, as field studies are still scarce in many sectors and industries, and even more so in nonprofit organizations. The current investigation seeks to explore the multiple relationships between responsible leadership and a number of important outcome variables in organizations, namely organization commitment and work engagement. The study further examines organizational identification as a moderating and explaining mechanism between responsible leadership and the two mentioned outcomes, in the nonprofit sector. Questionnaires from 231 employees from Portuguese nonprofit organizations were collected and analyzed with structural equation modeling, partial least squares (SEM-PLS). The results confirmed that responsible leadership is an antecedent for the three variables, and that organizational identification mediates the relationship between responsible leadership on the one hand, and organizational commitment and work engagement on the other hand. Responsible leadership provides several benefits for the understanding and management of leadership in nonprofit organizations. Thus, nonprofit organizations should be able to select, prepare, train, and develop leaders with the aim to become more responsible oriented and capable of engaging the workforce, which implies the associated need to nurture employee-relations in nonprofit organizations

  • Competitividade nacional, conhecimento e investimento estrangeiro
Publication . Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Serra, Fernando; Duarte, Carlos; Marques, Tânia
  • Bibliometrics in Public Administration
Publication . Marques, Tânia M. G.; Reis, Nuno Rosa; Serra, Fernando A. R.
Introduction: Bibliometrics refers to the studies which seek to compute the processes of written communication, including several methods for tracking the scientific information on a discipline, a field, or a topic. Thus, bibliometrics make available a complementary perspective of the history, path, and evolution of a discipline through the quantitative analysis of its existent literature. In Public Administration, there is arguably a scarcity of bibliometric studies. The relevance and usefulness of the bibliometric approach has not been yet fully grasped by the Public Administration scholars. Thus, an advancement on this comprehension and a widespread use of bibliometric techniques may contribute to advance the research in the Public Administration discipline.

  • Surviving the culture shock syndrome: the role of responsible leadership and emotional intelligence in enhancing expatriates’ performance
Publication . Marques, Tânia M. G.; Miska, Christof; Crespo, Cátia Fernandes; Jesus, João
Expatriates are increasingly being challenged to execute their roles with a higher sense of responsibility. However, there is a lack of studies that have empirically examined the impact of the recent responsible leadership (RL) approach on expatriates’ performance. Using Anxiety and Uncertainty Management Theory, this study examines the relationship between RL and expatriates’ performance (EP) and the influence of the culture shock (CS) on the relationship. In addition, the moderation effect of both emotional intelligence (EI) and cultural intelligence (CQ) are also examined. A web-based survey was administered to collect data from a sample of 204 expatriates and PLS-SEM was used to analyse the data. The results show that RL is negatively associated with culture shock and culture shock is negatively associated with expatriate performance. Moreover, RL is positively associated with expatriate performance and the results show that this relationship is moderated by the expatriate’s emotional intelligence. Overall, we emphasize the reducing anxiety and uncertainty ability of expatriates’ supervisors when supervisors demonstrate RL. Moreover, although cultural intelligence has been emphasized considerably in extant research, it seems less relevant than emotional intelligence when RL is concerned in the expatriation setting. Thus, we provide a different perspective for studying leadership complexities in the expatriation context. Our study contributes to illustrate that responsible leadership can reduce psychological complexities and increase performance in international assignments, highlighting the reinforcement role of expatriates’ EI for the success.
  • The influence of organisational justice on work engagement, organisational commitment, and job satisfaction: A comprehensive study
Publication . Gomes, Jorge FS; Marques, Tânia MG
Two important outcomes in modern organisations are work engagement and organisational commitment. These are relevant for individual performance, personal wellbeing and happiness, and also for organisations’ image and performance. The existing literature deals with both outcomes; however, it does not clarify how they relate to other key variables in organisational settings. Accordingly, this research has three main goals: 1) to examine the relationship between work engagement and organisational commitment; 2) to explore the influence of organisational justice on work engagement and organisational commitment and 3) to inspect the impact of the previous three variables on job satisfaction. A survey was used to collect data from a large international consultancy firm. One hundred valid responses were obtained and these were analysed with structural equation modelling in order to assess the proposed research model. The results confirm that organisational justice has a direct impact not only on work engagement but also on organisational commitment and job satisfaction. Organisational commitment is an antecedent variable for work engagement. No mediation effects were registered in the analyses. The originality of the study lies in the combination of the four variables into one single model that explains the complex re- lationships between the above-mentioned concepts.
