- 3D shape prior active contours for an automatic segmentation of a patient specific femur from a CT scanPublication . Almeida, D.; Folgado, J.; Fernandes, P.R.; Ruben, RuiThe following paper describes a novel approach to a medical image segmentation problem. The fully automated computational procedure receives as input images from CT scan exams of the human femur and returns a three dimensional representation of the bone. This patient specific iterative approach is based in 3D active contours without edges, implemented over a level set framework, on which the evolution of the contour depends on local image parameters which can easily be defined by the user but also on a priori information about the volume to segment. This joint approach will lead to an optimal solution convergence of the iterative method. The resulting point cloud can be an excellent starting point for a Finite Element mesh generation and analysis or the basis for a stereolitography for example.

Rodrigues, NunoThe technologies which allow an immersive user experience in 3D environments are rapidly evolving and new services have emerged in various fields of application. Most of these services require the use of 3D video, combined with appropriate display systems. As a consequence, research and development in 3D video continues attracting sustained interest. While stereoscopic viewing is already widely spread, namely in TV and gaming, new displays and applications, such as FTV (Free viewpoint TV), require the use of a larger number of views. Hence, the multiview video format was considered, which uses N views, corresponding to the images captured by N cameras (either real or virtual), with a controlled spatial arrangement. In order to avoid a linear escalation of the bitrate, associated with the use of multiple views, video-plus-depth formats have been proposed. A small number of texture and depth video sequences are used to synthesize intermediate texture views at a different space position, through a depth-image-based rendering (DIBR) technique. This technology allows the use of advanced stereoscopic display processing and to improve support for high-quality autostereoscopic multiview displays. In order to provide a true 3D content and fatigue-free 3D visualization, holoscopic imaging has been introduced as an acquisition and display solution. However, efficient coding schemes for this particular type of content are needed to enable proper storage and delivery of the large amount of data involved in these systems, which is also addressed in this chapter.
- Adaptive Evolutionary Testing: An Adaptive Approach to Search-Based Test Case Generation for Object-Oriented SoftwarePublication . Ribeiro, José Carlos Bregieiro; Zenha-Rela, Mário Alberto; de Vega, Francisco FernándezAdaptive Evolutionary Algorithms are distinguished by their dynamic manipulation of selected parameters during the course of evolving a problem solution; they have an advantage over their static counterparts in that they are more reactive to the unanticipated particulars of the problem. This paper proposes an adaptive strategy for enhancing Genetic Programming-based approaches to automatic test case generation. The main contribution of this study is that of proposing an Adaptive Evolutionary Testing methodology for promoting the introduction of relevant instructions into the generated test cases by means of mutation; the instructions from which the algorithm can choose are ranked, with their rankings being updated every generation in accordance to the feedback obtained from the individuals evaluated in the preceding generation. The experimental studies developed show that the adaptive strategy proposed improves the test case generation algorithm's efficiency considerably, while introducing a negligible computational overhead.
- Analysis of Power Quality Disturbances in Industry in the Centre Region of PortugalPublication . These issues are of major concern for energy customers, primarily for customers with a widespread use of electronic devices in their manufacturing processes. Even though the quality of service is increasing, customers are becoming more demanding of the energy provider. This research aims to provide some industrial managers the technical support in deciding of investments in the mitigation of power quality disturbances, such as the use of less sensitive devices or the use of interface devices (UPS, DVR...) In order to recommend an appropriate solution, the problem is characterized. The technical and economic influences of the PQ disturbances in the manufacturing processes are assessed resorting to power quality audits in the customer facilities. This research covered a significant number of facilities in several industrial activities.
- Augmented Reality and 3D Technologies: Mapping Case Studies in EducationPublication . Cardoso, Teresa; Coimbra, Teresa; Mateus, ArturLearning anywhere, anytime is becoming ever more a daily routine, due to the increasing and recent growth of information and communication technologies. In the last 5 years, their key characteristic and specifically in the use of mobile equipment and software have been their portability, mobility, and network access. The technological development, including software applications available for the implementation of three-dimensional contents, has been following this trend. Hence, it is important to know whether and how these threedimensional contents are being integrated in educational situations, namely, regarding augmented reality and mobile learning. Thus, a synthesis of Portuguese and international research works and case studies on the use of threedimensional augmented reality is chronologically presented along with the evolution of information and communication technologies. The main goal of this knowledge mapping is to contribute to the state of the art in threedimensional augmented reality technologies in education. In addition, it is aimed at framing the creation and implementation of three-dimensional content in higher education, specifically in the field of mathematics. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2015.
- Building and Using an Ontology of Preference-Based Multiobjective Evolutionary AlgorithmsPublication . There is a large variety of preference handling methods (originated from Multicriteria decision making, MCDM) and EMO methods, which have been combined in various ways. This paper proposes a Web Ontology Language (OWL) ontology to model and systematize the knowledge of preferencebased multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (PMOEAs). Detailed procedure is given on how to build and use the ontology with the help of Prot´eg´e. Different use-cases, including training new learners, querying and reasoning are exemplified and show remarkable benefit for both EMO and MCDM communities.

The recent development of melt electrospinning provides a new additive manufacturing tool, providing routes to structures from nanometres to millimetres. Here, we consider where this rollercoaster of a topic is heading and its future prospects.
- Characterising Enterprise Application Integration Solutions as Discrete-Event SystemsPublication . Sawicki, Sandro; Frantz, Rafael Z.; Basto-Fernandes, Vitor; Fabricia Roos-Frantz, Fabricia; Yevseyeva, Iryna; Corchuelo, RafaelIt is not difficult to find an enterprise which has a software ecosystem composed of applications that were built using different technologies, data models, operating systems, and most often were not designed to exchange data and share functionalities. Enterprise Application Integration provides methodologies and tools to design and implement integration solutions. The state-of-the-art integration technologies provide a domain-specific language that enables the design of conceptual models for integration solutions. The analysis of integration solutions to predict their behaviour and find possible performance bottlenecks is an important activity that contributes to increase the quality of the delivered solutions, however, software engineers follow a costly, risky, and time-consuming approach. Integration solutions shall be understood as a discrete-event system. This chapter introduces a new approach based on simulation to take advantage of well-established techniques and tools for discrete-event simulation, cutting down cost, risk, and time to deliver better integration solutions.
- Characterization of the Dagorda Claystone in Leiria, Portugal, Based on Laboratory TestsPublication . Veiga, A.; Quinta-Ferreira, M.The Hetangian Dagorda claystone Formation occupies the core of a diapir outcropping in part of the city of Leiria, exhibiting a complex geological structure. The geological and geotechnical characterization is presented based in field observation and laboratory tests allowing to conclude that the Dagorda clay soils exhibit an unfavourable behaviour for urban occupation, due to the presence of expansive clay minerals. When partially saturated these soils can lead to cracking of walls and floors, or even to endanger the stability of buildings, if they have not been strengthened to resist to expansive soil. The presence of soluble minerals, mainly gypsum and seldom halite, can allow the formation of voids and eventually the deformation or collapse of the ground. Suitable safety procedures, in order to prevent hazards should be used.
- Complexity Analysis of HEVC Decoding for Multi-core PlatformsPublication . Cordeiro, Paulo J.; Assunção, Pedro; Gómez-Pulido, Juan A.The High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is the latest standard, providing the same quality as its predecessor H.264/AVC at about half of the bit-rate. An increasing demand for higher quality and better resolutions in mobile applications require the use of more efficient video codecs, but the high computational complexity of HEVC poses problems to resource-constrained devices and portable equipment with limited batery-life. Despite the fact that video coding complexity is much higher than decoding, in most user devices, video decoding is used more often than encoding, thus particular attention must also be given to HEVC decoders. This paper presents an experimental study and complexity analysis of the HEVC decoder’s behaviour when decoding 4k ultra high definition (UHD) and HD video sequences on multi-core platforms, such as those of the most recent mobile devices. It is shown that when tile partitioning is used, different tiles have different decoding complexities. These findings are relevant for devising dynamic tile partitioning schemes capable of achieving load balancing in video decoders running on multi-core platforms.
