- Antithrombotic therapy after stent implantation. One size does not fit allPublication . Morais, João; Oliveira, MárioThe study published by Baptista et al.1 sought to assess the quality of antithrombotic therapy in a group of 996 patients with diabetes prior to coronary percutaneous intervention, searching for how guidelines are being applied in a realworld setting.
- EditorialPublication . Bartolo, Paulo; Chua, C.K.In this issue of Virtual and Physical Prototyping, there are three Virtual Prototyping papers and two Physical Prototyping papers. Interestingly, three of the five papers relate to the area of bone tissue engineering, an area which is of great and current research interest to readers.
- EditorialPublication . Bartolo, Paulo; Chua, C. K.We end the year 2009, our fourth year of existence, with three state-of-the-art papers and two technical papers. In the first formal paper, Liebschner describes current efforts in identifying mechano-biological principles that are believed to guide tissue formation based on biomechanical loading. The goal of the research is to discuss a reverse engineering solution in a strategy that starts with the final product, in this case, a human trabecular bone tissue, and determines the required scaffold micro-architecture and features in order to achieve that goal. Computer models of dissected human trabecular bone samples are generated, their micro-mechanical environment analysed and results used as design goals. In the second paper, Pouzada proposes hybrid moulds as a case of integration of alternative materials and rapid prototyping for tooling. This work reviews some of the outcomes of research activity on specific issues of manufacturing and utilisation of these tools. Most of the results refer to moulding blocks produced in epoxy composites that were manufactured using the vacuum casting technique. Some references are also made to rapid tooling techniques based on laser sintering. Biomanufacturing in tissue engineering is the topic of review by Bartolo et al. In recent years, the use of rapid prototyping techniques in the fabrication of tissue engineering scaffolds has generated a lot of interest. This paper presents a state-of-the-art review of all such research activities and attempts to give a crystal ball forecast of the future trends in this growing field.
- EditorialPublication . Bártolo, Paulo; Chua, C. K.In this issue, we invited five winners of the ‘Best Paper Awards’ at the 4th International Conference on Advanced Research in Virtual and Rapid Prototyping, Leiria, Portugal, 6-10 October 2009, to enhance their conference papers to the standard of an international journal. One paper each from ‘Materials’ track, ‘Biomanufacturing’ track and ‘Virtual Environment & Simulation’ track and two papers from ‘Advanced Rapid Prototyping Technologies and Nanofabrication’ track.
- EditorialPublication . Bártolo, Paulo; Chua, C. K.As time goes on, the relevance of the Virtual and Physical Prototyping journal increases. This Journal was submitted to Thomson Scientific to be accepted as an ISI Journal and the number of conferences asking for our endorsement is growing fast, such as the following: . International Conference on Additive Technologies, IC AT2010, 22 24 September 2010, Nova Gorica, Slovenia . Virtual Concept 2010, 20-22 October 2010, Bordeaux, France Both conferences will be endorsed by Virtual and Physical Prototyping, as will the 5th International Conference on Advanced Research in Virtual and Rapid Prototyping (VRAP Conference), which will be held at Leiria by the Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, from 28 September to 1 October 2011.
- EditorialPublication . Bártolo, Paulo; Chua, C.K.The year of 2012 is a fruitful year for Virtual & Physical Prototyping. The journal has maintained its usual publication record and published a total of twenty-three original research articles (including this issue). Similarly, total citations to this journal in Year 2012 have also maintained at a near-hundred level by the mid-October (Scopus). The stabilized publication record and total citations demonstrate a mature and healthy status of the journal. In this regard, we thank all authors who have made contributions to this journal.
- The fascinating world of clinical registries. Insights into current practicePublication . Morais, JoãoRegistries are an important piece in building the pyramid of evidence, with multicenter randomized clinical trials at the top of that pyramid. Within Europe, the European Society of Cardiology has led this movement with the Euro Heart Survey, a major program comprising registries to investigate clinical conditions such as acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, chronic stable angina, among others, as well as treatments including revascularization.
