- Da peregrinação presencial à digital na Casa-Museu Afonso Lopes Vieira.Publication . Nobre, Cristina; ESECS | IPLeiriaEm 2005, com a inauguração da Casa-Museu Afonso Lopes Vieira (CMALV), foi criado e partilhado com o público um ‘lugar literário’ como novo território cultural. Percorre-se a história deste local e das peregrinações literárias que lhe têm sido dedicadas durante as últimas duas décadas, dando conta das dificuldades inerentes a todos os projetos de turismo cultural. Depois dos efeitos da tempestade Kristin, reflete--se sobre a inevitabilidade de abrir o espaço CMALV para uma digitalização que permita a sua efetiva partilha com as comunidades, tanto nacionais como internacionais, bem como com os investigadores, e resulte em novos e melhores investimentos culturais em rede. A ausência de um projeto de crescimento sustentado, pode levar a CMALV a soçobrar no pó dum espólio riquíssimo, mas que a ignorância e a falta de tratamento e de meios impedem de ser ativamente colocados ao serviço da memória e da cultura comunitária, como património capaz de despertar sentimentos de identidade. Requer-se uma prudência outra, que não a dos desejos humanos de poder e afirmação, porém a de um bom senso capaz de distinguir práticas turísticas enriquecedoras do património cultural das do turismo desgastante, consumista e descartável, mancha e ruína de uma clara afirmação das identidades culturais. Sem vida cultural projetada no presente e direcionada para o futuro, com ofertas culturais e educativas de qualidade, mesmo os espaços repletos de memória podem entrar em decadência acelerada. Mudam-se os tempos, sofrem-se alterações climáticas e é preciso ter coragem para mudar as vontades. Só assim a memória do passado chegará ao futuro intacta e com capacidade para gerar novas vidas no complexo processo cultural sem o qual não há humanidade.
- Beyond the duality: passion profiles on intention, and satisfaction with life in recreational surfersPublication . Sá, J. M.; Silva, A. J.; Monteiro, Diogo; Garrido, N.; Rodrigues, FilipeSurfing is a demanding physical activity that frequently elicits a strong emotional bond in its practitioners. To address the gap in understanding these bonds from a person-centered approach, the present study pursued three primary objectives: (a) to define and identify passion profiles within a sample of recreational surfers; (b) to compare differences among these profiles concerning intention to continue practicing; and (c) to compare differences among profiles with respect to life satisfaction. The study included 132 surfers (Mage = 38.81 ± 12.19 years; 78.8% male). Through a cluster analysis based on the dualistic model of passion, three distinct profiles were identified: moderate passion (20.5%), Optimized Passion (37.1%), and Mixed Passion (42.4%). Comparative analysis using the Kruskal–Wallis test revealed that Mixed and Optimized Passion profiles reported significantly higher levels of intention to continue the practice (H = 32.38; p < 0.001) and life satisfaction (H = 10.64; p = 0.005) as compared to the Moderate Passion profile. No statistically significant differences were observed between the Mixed and Optimized groups. It is concluded that the predominant motivational configuration designated as Mixed is functional and adaptive in the surfing context, suggesting that the coexistence of harmonious and obsessive passion favors persistence and psychological well-being.
- Influence of commensal bacteria on the proteolytic and antigenic profiles of INFOGEST-like digested wheat gliadinPublication . Pereira-Costa, Flávio; Domingues, Vanessa S.; Roque, Ana; Almeida, Zaida L.; Cruz, Pedro F.; Cordeiro, Rachel; Trindade, Daniela; Moura, Carla; Melo, Joana B.; Pereira, Sónia G.; Vaz, Daniela C.Introduction: Celiac disease (CeD) is a chronic autoimmune enteropathy developed by genetically predisposed individuals when exposed to gluten. Gluten gliadins, along with gut microbiota, may influence CeD onset and progression through mechanisms that remain unclear. Methods: Gliadin-degrading bacterial isolates obtained from CeD patients, and their 1st-degree relatives’ stool and blood were identified (Bacillus tropicus, Enterococcus faecalis, Micrococcus sp., Cronobacter sakazakii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Serratia marcescens) and used in an INFOGEST-like protocol to simulate gliadin digestion after 4 h (digested gliadin, d-gliadin). The d-gliadin digesta were analyzed by fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fluorescence spectroscopy, and polyclonal and monoclonal (R5 and G12) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Results and discussion: In the absence of the bacterial isolates, gliadin is poorly digested and self-assembles within 1 day into intermediate and large protein oligomers/aggregates, enriched in β-sheet structure (FTIR amide I band between 1,600 and 1,700 cm−1) and able to bind thioflavin T and Congo red. Conversely, in the presence of the bacterial isolates, gliadin is further digested, leading to an increase in protein fragments. After 4 h, the P. aeruginosa, C. sakazakii, and B. tropicus d-gliadin digesta presented a mixture of d-gliadin peptides and aggregates that showed higher antigenicity (associated with the exposure of the 5-amino acid QQPFP and 6-amino acid QPQLPY epitopes, present in the 25-mer and 33-mer, respectively) than control digestions (without bacteria), while E. faecalis led to lower antigenicity. In turn, within 24 h of incubation, all bacterial isolates led to the formation of undigested material with lower antigenicity, either due to fewer 33-mers and 25-mers in solution, or to fragment aggregation into amorphous material, not exposing antigenic sequences. Hence, intestinal flora may enhance or diminish the antigenicity of gliadin, thereby modulating the immunogenic response to gliadin/gluten.
- Fear of Falling and Eye–Segmental Coordination in Portuguese Elderly Participants Enrolled in a Community Physical Exercise ProgrammePublication . Inácio Coelho, Luís Pedro; Dias, Diogo; Canhoto, Ricardo; Cruz, João; Monteiro, Diogo; Jacinto, Miguel; Antunes, RaulThe performance of 94 elderly subjects (73 women) (71.72 ± 5.64) in an eye–hand and eye–foot coordination test (TST) was correlated with fear of falling, based on the results obtained on the International Fall Efficacy Scale (FES-I), translated into Portuguese. The results revealed that, for the whole sample, there was a weak inverse association between the two (ρ = −0.54, p < 0.05). However, when analyzing the results by gender, this inverse association only remained significant for females (ρ = −0.305, p < 0.01), with no statistical significance for males. Thus, higher levels of fear of falling in the elderly female population were associated with lower levels of eye–segmental coordination. Additionally, men achieved significantly better results in TST than women (9.38 ± 4.70 vs. 4.67 ± 3.13, p < 0.001). Regarding fear of falling, women had significantly higher scores (23.51 ± 7.17 vs. 21.38 ± 7.59, p < 0.05). At the same time, elderly men had higher values of eye–segmental coordination, which may have reduced their fear of falling. Results highlight the importance of the maintenance of a healthy and active lifestyle through the lifespan and place TST as a potential proxy for detecting fear of falling in elderly populations, especially in women. Future studies would benefit from employing balanced, representative samples to validate and extend these results, particularly regarding possible sex-related patterns, as the study relied on a convenience sample that was markedly unbalanced in terms of sex.
