Gomes, P.; Diogo, S.; Santos, E.; Ratten, VanessaOrganizations characterized by a climate and culture of competition and overwork facilitate the emergence of the workaholism phenomenon, as they provide favorable conditions for employees to spend more time in the workplace. Many of these employees are successful in their careers both in financial terms and in job satisfaction. This article aims to study the influence of workaholism on the perception of career success. - Psychological empowerment for the future of work: Evidence from PortugalPublication . Oliveira, Margarida; Andrade, José Ricardo; Ratten, Vanessa; Santos, E.In the competitive global marketplace, it is becoming important for organizations to empower employees for productivity reasons. One of the organizational empowerment models with greater support and consistency in the various studies in which it has been used is Spreitzer's Model of Psychological Empowerment in the Workplace, published in 1995. The model is composed of four dimensions that allow the measurement of the components of meaning, competence, self-determination and the impact of work on individual empowerment. The present study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties, in the Portuguese context, of the referred model. After the translation and adaptation of the psychological empowerment scale, the questionnaire was applied to a sample of 545 workers from Portuguese industrial organizations. The results of the application of structural equation modeling allow identifying the same components defined by the Spreitzer model, so it can be considered a reliable and valid instrument to measure organizational empowerment in the Portuguese context. However, we consider that complementary studies are necessary to analyze the psychometric properties of the scale and to further advance the research. The results obtained allow us to affirm that empowerment will be a basic strategy to improve the organizational transformations that companies constantly face. It is therefore important for Portuguese organizations to analyze the level of psychological empowerment of their employees, in order to find solutions to problems such as turnover, talent attraction, performance, work demotivation and improve human resource management practices. This is particularly important following the COVID-19 pandemic in which the psychology of employees was tested due to working from home and social distancing requirements.

The methodology used is of a quantitative nature, based on a questionnaire survey that analyzes the risk management planning and risk management of 1647 Portuguese companies from different sectors of activity. The results allow us to conclude that the aspects that most manifest themselves in the perceptions of risk management planning are having a management plan that includes the relationship with customers, suppliers, and employees, as well as an updated security plan. This study intends to contribute to academic knowledge and for companies to know and master the concepts of risk management planning and risk management in its different aspects, helping the adoption of strategies to better plan risk management. - Strategic perspective of error management the role of leadership and an error management culture: a mediation modelPublication . Oliveira, Margarida Freitas; Santos, E.; Ratten, VanessaPurpose – Errors are inevitable, resulting from the human condition itself, system failures and the interaction of both. It is essential to know how to deal with their occurrence, managing them. However, the negative tone associated with them makes it difficult for most organizations to talk about mistakes clearly and transparently, for fear of being harmed, preventing their detection, treatment and recovery. Consequently, errors are not managed, remaining accumulated in the system, turning into successive failures. Organizations need to recognize the inevitability of errors, making the system robust, through leadership and an organizational culture of error management. This study aims to understand the role of these influencing variables in an error management approach. Design/methodology/approach – In this paper methodology of a quantitative nature based on a questionnaire survey that analyses error management, leadership and the organizational culture of error management of 380 workers in Portuguese companies. Findings – The results demonstrate that leadership directly influences error management and indirectly through the organizational culture of error management, giving this last variable a mediating role. Originality/value – The study covers companies from different sectors of activity on a topic that is little explored in Portugal, but part of the daily life of organizations, which should deserve greater attention from directors and managers, as they assume a privileged position to promote and develop error management mechanisms. Error management must be the daily work of leaders. This study contributes to theoretical knowledge and business practice on error management.
- The impact of the experiences on affects during the COVID-19 pandemic quarantinePublication . Santos, E.; Diogo, Ana; Ratten, Vanessa; Tavares, F.The beauty of the universe was designed in the sense that the human being can enjoy this experience, in freedom, each moment as a unique experience. The contact with other beings in the universe is very important, maintaining a balance between positive and negative affects. Faced with a pandemic phenomenon, this whole scenario changed in an unexpected way. The experiences started to take place in a limited space, in the human being’s own residence, without contact with other people except the family that lives together in the same space. The aim of this article is to study the impact of the experiences on the affects during the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine. In terms of methodology, it was used as a questionnaire survey to analyze the experiences and the emotions intensity. The sample consists of 726 individuals who were in Portugal during the quarantine and confinement period. The results show that the experiences lived during quarantine, in general, have an impact on affects: the factor Sense and Feel has a positive impact on positive affect and a negative impact on negative affect, the Think factor has a negative impact on positive affect and a positive impact on negative affect, and the Act factor only has a positive impact on negative affect. It is expected that this study will help academics in their investigations, contributing to increase in scientific knowledge in the behavioral area of lived experiences and in the area of positive psychology in the context of pandemic and confinement situations. The results found become useful for health professionals to define appropriate strategies to improve the way individuals experience the experiences and affects and, consequently, improve the well-being and health of individuals.
- The perception of middle managers on the organizational environment for the promotion of entrepreneurship and innovation activities in organizationsPublication . Felizardo, A.; Santos, E.; Sousa, A.; Ratten, VanessaThe purpose of this study is to assess the perception of middle-level managers on the internal factors that may influence or condition their entrepreneurial behavior in organizations. The study develops and tests the Corporate Entrepreneurship Assessment Instrument that allows to identify the internal conditions that influence the participation of middle-level management in the activities of organizational entrepreneurship. The sample consists of 66 middle-level managers with functions in nonfinancial companies with activity in Portugal. In the data analysis, descriptive analysis and statistical inference techniques were used. Intrapreneurship is a means by which companies can develop the capacity of their employees to innovate. Middle-level managers present positive levels of perception regarding the internal environment of the organization and in the discretion at work, where the results are more positive. The study suggests that intrapreneurship has effects on entrepreneurship in organizations. This is useful to understand the behaviors of organizations toward their entrepreneurial orientations and for managers of the middle-level level in order to obtain support for their decisions. The reduced number of data obtained limits the range and depth of the theme exploration. The corporate entrepreneurship assessment instrument (CEAI) instrument is reliable. However, it was not possible to validate for the Portuguese population due to the low number of responses. This emphasizes the importance of future research with the CEAI. This study contributes to a greater understanding of the advantages of organizations having an entrepreneurial culture as a factor to increase their competitiveness.
