- AMIGA - An Interactive Musical Environment for GerontechnologyPublication . Reis, Lee Scott; Reis, Gustavo; Barroso, João; Pereira, AntónioBenefits provided by music in humans have been reinforced through several studies, mainly by active participation in musical therapy sessons, with surprising results in physical and psychological rehabilitation. However, all the previous implemented approaches require specialized hardware to function and complex configurations to set-up. We define a computational system focused on the elderly to allow musical expressiveness through motion, solely using the resources available in an ordinary home computer. To evaluate our approach, we developed a prototype and piloted acceptance tests on several senior citizens, with an average age of eighty-three. Our experiments showed high levels of interest from the senior citizens, denoting positive capabilities of well-being and life quality enrichment. The performed experiments have also shown that an ordinary computer is capable of performing the proposed methodology, without any restriction.
- Blind Guide: An Ultrasound Sensor-based Body Area Network for Guiding Blind PeoplePublication . Pereira, António; Nunes, Nelson; Vieira, Daniel; Costa, Nuno; Fernandes, Hugo; Barroso, JoãoWireless Sensor Networks, in particular Wireless Body Area Networks, is a technology suggested by the research community as allowing elderly people, or people with some kind of disability, to live in a safer, responsive and comfortable environment while at their homes. One of the most active threats to the autonomous life of blind people is the quantity and variety of obstacles they face while moving, whether they are obstacles in the footpath or obstacles coming out from the walls of buildings. Hence, it is necessary to develop a solution that helps or assists blind people while moving either in indoor or outdoor scenarios, simultaneously allowing the use of the use of white cane or the Seeing Eye dog. In this article, the authors propose the use of an ultra-sound based body area network for obstacle detection and warning as a complementary and effective solution for aiding blind people when moving from place to place. According to the cost estimates of the solution and to the negligible setup time, this could be a real effective complementary solution for blind people.
- Blind Guide: anytime, anywherePublication . Blind people usually have enhanced accuracy and sensibility of their other natural senses in order to sense their surroundings. But sometimes this is not enough because the human senses can be affected by external sources of noise or disease. That is why technology has been used to develop many assistive tools. Artifacts like white canes or braille compasses help blind people moving around in the environment. In this article, the use of a system that detects and recognize nearby objects or obstacles is proposed, giving an audible feedback to the user. It is designed as a wireless system in order to be comfortable to be carried by the user. The system helps visual impaired people to move around in indoor or outdoor scenarios. The goals of this blind guide system is to detect obstacles that white canes or dogs cannot, extending its detection range.
- Communication Protocol for Unmanned Vehicles : An Architectural ApproachPublication . Ramos, João; Ribeiro, Roberto; Safadinho, David; Barroso, João; Pereira, AntonioThe great potential of Unmanned Vehicles (UV) for services is supported by the evolution of drones and their flexible ability to help us performing dangerous, boring and difficult tasks. The common communication solutions e.g., radio, consider a pilot and a vehicle in the same location. Besides, the alternatives based on Ground Control Stations (GCS) are difficult to configure, which makes it difficult for a common user and a developer to use and/or implement new services for drones. This work proposes a solution with a new messaging protocol to overcome the previous problems, allowing controlling a UV in a remote location after a simple configuration. The implementation of this approach is based on a cloud platform, responsible for UV and user management, and on TCP/IP WebSockets for the user to control remotely located vehicles, anytime and anywhere. This research starts with the analysis of the prior work regarding UV communication technologies and the available GCS. Minding the identified problems, we designed an architecture that represents a cloud platform and multiple users and UVs in different networks. To prototype this architecture, we developed the user interface, the platform and the UV control module. The functional assessment considers a generic simplified and controlled scenario, focusing on the real-time control and video stream. The results confirmed the possibility to control a UV in a different location, in real-time, with an average response time of 25ms. This work provides valuable insights regarding the communication in the fields of anytime and anywhere device control and vehicle-based services.

- Elder care architecture - A physical and social approachPublication . The special needs presented by the elderly are becoming a major concern for all of us, along with the lack of time demonstrated by society as a whole and, as a consequence, the lack of time is seen when families are not able to take care of their own elders. Many solutions are being presented in order to solve this problem. Some of them are taking advantage of the new technological developments in the body sensor networks area. In this paper we propose the architecture of a system called Elder Care. The Elder Care solution has two primary goals: monitoring vital signs, sending alerts to family and to specialized help and providing a social network in order to help end the elderly's social isolation.
- IndoorCare: Low-Cost Elderly Activity Monitoring System through Image ProcessingPublication . Fuentes, Daniel; Correia, Luís; Costa, Nuno; Reis, Arsénio; Ribeiro, José; Rabadão, Carlos; Barroso, João; Pereira, AntónioThe Portuguese population is aging at an increasing rate, which introduces new problems, particularly in rural areas, where the population is small and widely spread throughout the territory. These people, mostly elderly, have low income and are often isolated and socially excluded. This work researches and proposes an affordable Ambient Assisted Living (AAL)‐based solution to monitor the activities of elderly individuals, inside their homes, in a pervasive and non-intrusive way, while preserving their privacy. The solution uses a set of low‐cost IoT sensor devices, computer vision algorithms and reasoning rules, to acquire data and recognize the activities performed by a subject inside a home. A conceptual architecture and a functional prototype were developed, the prototype being successfully tested in an environment similar to a real case scenario. The system and the underlying concept can be used as a building block for remote and distributed elderly care services, in which the elderly live autonomously in their homes, but have the attention of a caregiver when needed.
- Landmarks Detection to Assist the Navigation of Visually Impaired PeoplePublication . Visual information is the basis for most navigational tasks, so visually impaired individuals are at disadvantage due to the lack of information or given insufficient information about their surrounding environment. With the recent advances in inclusive technology it is possible to extend the support given to people with visual disabilities during their mobility. In this context we propose a new algorithm to recognize landmarks suitably placed on sidewalks. The proposed algorithm uses a combination of Peano-Hilbert Space Filling Curves for dimension reduction of image data and Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) to pre-process the image, resulting on a fast and efficient recognition method and revealing a promising solution.
- Low-Cost Smart Surveillance System for Smart CitiesPublication . With time, the implementation of safety measures is rapidly changing from a need to a priority. Video surveillance systems play a key role in the surveillance of crucial and critical areas as these systems help the authorities keep places safer. With the rapid growth of technology and the implementation of the smart city concept, it is becoming possible to develop and deploy wide area surveillance systems. The ease with which these systems can be installed in private and public spaces (e.g., homes, streets and parks) allow for the creation of ubiquitous monitored environments. Rapid intervention responses to any abnormal situation or the use of recorded video as evidence are some advantages of the use of this type of surveillance systems. Although ubiquitous video surveillance systems are relevant for present modern societies, their cost is still high. To solve or, at least to mitigate this problem, a low-cost smart surveillance system was developed, which is presented and described in this paper. The developed surveillance system, based on available low-cost technology, can help keep critical spaces under surveillance 24/7. The proposed solution was found to have a minimal cost, a low bandwidth, and to be scalable and adaptable to every client’s needs. Thus, the solution can be used by anybody (private and public) and applied in different contexts (e.g., residential, industrial). The system can provide still images, captured from surveillance video cameras, real time video and real time video processing, which can be used for motion detection. When this happens, the user is warned via an e-mail containing the identification of the respective surveillance camera. Only the relevant video events are sent, recorded and maintained in the cloud platform system, consequently reducing the amount of storage space required to maintain all the historical video events. The results of the tests carried out show that it is possible to stream a video from the surveillance cameras with an insignificant delay and that motion detection can be attained through real time video processing. The system presented potentiates a low-cost solution for a smart city in the surveillance field.
- Obstacle detection and avoidance module for the blindPublication . With recent advances in inclusive technology it is possible to extend the support given to people with visual disabilities in terms of their mobility. In this context we present and describe a wearable system (Blavigator project), whose global objective is to assist visually impaired people in their navigation on indoor and outdoor environments. This paper is focused mainly on the Computer Vision module of the Blavigator prototype. We propose an object collision detection algorithm based on stereo vision. The proposed algorithm uses Peano-Hilbert Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (PH-EEMD) for disparity image processing and a two layer disparity image segmentation to detect nearby objects. Using the adaptive ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) image analysis real time is not achieved, with PH-EEMD results on a fast implementation suitable for real time applications.
