  • Ultimate at Schools Programme, Teacher's File
    Publication . Amoroso, José Pedro
I have been involved in Ultimate and frisbee sports for 20 years. I have lots to tell, lots of stories, I’ve come up against several obstacles and setbacks. However, my passion for the sport and, in particular, for what Ultimate represents in all its different fields of knowledge, has helped me remain focused on a well-defined objective. #frisbeelifestyle is now here to stay. One of the aims of this Programme for PE Teachers is, without a doubt, to provide the tools so that every professional can understand and prepare their lessons/activities using the disc, where the SOTG – Spirit of the Game is clearly presented and reinforced so that teachers can understand how and in what manner they can put it into practice. I soon realised how important disc games are in children’s multilateral, eclectic and well-balanced development. Pedagogically comprehensive, including in terms of affections and emotions, of motor control, and including a number of features that make these games unique in teaching and in developing soft skills for life. The first training course at a school in Portugal took place in 2003, and since then there have been contacts with several hundreds of schools throughout the country and several training sessions aimed at Physical Education teachers. In 2020, we will be part of the national physical education curriculum and we aim to reach each and every school in Portugal and the Portuguese archipelagos. Each country has their own laws in terms of Education and Sports, and it is not my place to assess them or refer better teaching models or methods. We have created this programme with the aim of reaching each and every teacher and anyone who is passionate about sports. The programme is easy to read and perfectly adaptable to the curriculum in other countries. We would like to make this tool, Ultimate and disc sports accessible to everyone, and the place to start is at schools! It is now up to each professional to use the disc to develop teaching strategies according to their subject, so that we may make an impact and create a sound teaching mechanism in the medium and long run! I take this opportunity to thank the municipality of Leiria, the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, the IPDJ, Sports School and Leiria Flying Objects, for all their support over the years.
  • Handbook For Sport Clubs On The Move
Publication . Simões, Paula; Amoroso, José
The benefits of physical activity for health have been widely acknowledged, namely by the World Health Organization (WHO) and by the European Union. In view of that, worldwide policies and initiatives for the promotion of physical activity have been launched from different sectors of society, namely from organizations whose core is on health, education, sports, youth, old age, or on social inclusion. Sports clubs are important players in this arena because, besides the physical activity, through socio-cultural processes, they encourage social interaction, reinforce a sense of place and community, and the range of physical and mental health benefits contribute significantly to well-being. There is evidence of better psychological and physical health outcomes in club-based (team) sports’ participants compared to the lonely ones. Moreover, especially in small communities, sport events are likely to be an important tool in promoting cultural exchange and social networks and to have a non-neglectable economic impact on the local economy due to tourism expenses. Hence, especially in the most remote rural areas, the work of small sports clubs is valuable from different perspectives.

In ultimate games governed by the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF), all competitors also take on the role of referee. The players discuss disputed calls with each other during the game, and then follow rules designed for these situations to determine how the play continues. The number one rule of the sport is to respect the spirit of the game (SOTG), which encourages competitive play while preserving mutual respect and minimizing the risk of injury. The use of SOTG in ultimate in the framework of self-arbitration as a moral practice aligns well with other tools of critical pedagogy. For this study, the SOTG scores of the WFDF Joint Junior Ultimate Championship (JJUC 2022) were analyzed. A total of 1009 players from 19 countries competed in 434 self-refereed games (29 national teams in the WJUC Under-20 (U20) tournament and 20 teams in the EYUC Under-17 (U17) tournament). All the scores from the individual criteria correlated well with the overall scores, but for the most part, they did not correlate with each other. Our experience with the scoring system has highlighted the importance of participants understanding the meaning of the results and how they may lead to a constructive reflection to improve exceptions, including scores representing fouls and rules knowledge. The findings provide important information for physical education teachers, coaches, and sport consultants and may be of use to design SOTG programs that could foster the experience of sportsmanship and to facilitate the ethical conduct of athletes in either recreative or in competitive contexts.
