- Bio-Materials and Prototyping Applications in MedicinePublication . Bártolo, Paulo Jorge; Bidanda, Bopaya; Bártolo, Paulo Jorge; Bidanda, BopayaThis second edition maintains a focus on integrated biomaterials, computer-aided design, and physical prototyping techniques as examples of the materials and applications that are found in medical environments. All original chapters, written by renowned experts in the field, have been updated along with the addition of four new chapters on: • Smart insoles • Medical applications of additive manufacturing • Additive manufacturing in craniofacial applications • Additive manufacturing in hearing aids This wide-ranging treatise on biomaterials and prototyping applications in medicine also focuses on solid freeform fabrication, rapid prototyping, layered manufacturing, and computer-aided design in the development of prosthetic devices. This book is a must-have for bioengineers seeking a comprehensive overview of this important subject and examples of medical applications, as well as researchers and academics in the same field.
- Manufacturing a Better Future: Scientific Report 2018-2023Publication . Ruben, Rui Miguel Barreiros; Gaspar, Marcelo Rudolfo Calvete; Dias, Juliana Rosa; Ruben, Rui; Calvete Gaspar, Marcelo; Dias, Juliana; Politécnico de LeiriaThe Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development (CDRSP) of the Polytechnic of Leiria (IPL) is a leading research center with the mission of contributing to scientific and technological development through new products, materials and processes that are more sustainable, effective, and efficient. The CDRSP is an organic research unit of the IPL. It was founded in May 2007 to promote economic competitiveness, social cohesion, and sustainable development through new, more efficient, and sustainable products, materials, and processes. Portuguese Additive Manufacturing Initiative (PAMI) was a project that finished in 2021 and CDRSP was the leader. PAMI was a network for fundamental research and development of new techniques for additive manufacturing. The PAMI network was part of the National Roadmap of Research Infrastructures of Strategic Interest to foster an intelligent distribution of the excellent infrastructures that already exist in the central region of Portugal, with different areas of specialty (mechanics, materials, biomedical, and electronics) to increase competitiveness and the capacity to fix the high-performance production sector.
- PrefacePublication . Moreira, António Carrizo; Dantas, José Guilherme LeitãoEntrepreneurship is far from being a novel concept. To find its roots we have to go back to the 18th century and to the original authors of the concept, namely Richard Cantillon and Jean-Baptiste Say. Nevertheless, despite the multiple authors who have successively addressed this issue over the many decades, entrepreneurship only earned “citizenship rights” in the economy from the 1970s/80s onwards, given the evidence that SMEs were critical regarding wealth and jobs creation, the reduction of regional asymmetries, and being more effective than larger firms in terms of innovation (particularly in the early stages of the innovation process).
- PrefacePublication . Dantas, José Guilherme Leitão; Carvalho, Luísa CagicaOver the last years we have witnessed the enormous success of quite demanding ventures all over the world. We are particularly talking about technology-based projects which, in some cases, have revolutionized the way we live. Their impact on the national and international level has been unequivocal concerning jobs and wealth creation, the new solutions their development have enabled, etc. That kind of ventures, regardless of their outstanding relevance, is the exception rather than the norm, i.e., they are only the visible tip of the iceberg, in that they only account for a very small percentage of the entrepreneurial activity. Nevertheless, they belong to the so-called mainstream entrepreneurship, are the dream of every economy, and deserve the attention of many researchers. (...) In short, the book starts by covering a set of activities upstream of the entrepreneurial activity, and then addresses a significant, though not exhaustive, set of different types of entrepreneurship, often paving the way for more in-depth investigations which will allow us to continue expanding such a relevant theme for our collective future.
- Virtual Prototyping & Bio Manufacturing in Medical ApplicationsPublication . Bidanda, Bopaya; Bártolo, Paulo Jorge; Bidanda, Bopaya; Bártolo, Paulo JorgeThis new edition focuses on modeling and manufacturing in the field of prototyping and bio manufacturing. The principles utilized draw heavily from more traditional engineering fields including mechanical, industrial, civil (structures), electrical, and bio engineering. Written for engineers and academics seeking a comprehensive overview of virtual prototyping and rapid prototyping, this book discusses in detail applications related to surgery, medical imaging, tissue engineering, bone replacement, and more. Seven new chapters address: • Two-photon polymerization for tissue engineering • Molding in medicine • Organ printing • Skin printing • Nerve regeneration and spinal injury repair • Cartilage regeneration • And Structural analysis of the human shoulder.
