- An artificial reef at the edge of the deep: An interdisciplinary case studyPublication . Ramos, Jorge; Tuaty-Guerra, Miriam; Almeida, Mariana; Raposo, Ana C.; Gaudêncio, Maria J.; Silva, Alexandra D.; Rodrigues, Nuno; Leandro, Sérgio M.; Caetano, MiguelJust nearby the largest submarine canyon in Europe – off the western coast of Portugal – is located the Nazaré artificial reef (NAR) deployed in 2010 and the first of its kind in this coast. NAR aimed to improve social and economic resilience of the local communities, mainly by creating a safer and closer area for fishing and to enhance commercially exploitable marine resources. The innovative part of this research lies on the fact that for the first time was developed a multidisciplinary approach for NAR. Scientificevidence from fieldwork shows that in 2015 the reef was already mature and colonized by abundant and diversified macrobenthic assemblages. No evidence of negative impacts of NAR on the soft bottom macrofauna was observed, as assemblage composition in the NAR area and in the vicinity areas is similar. In relation to the primary producers that support the subsequent food chain, there also seems to be a balance between NAR and the surrounding area since phytoplankton was equally abundant throughout the area. Experimental fisheries and underwater visual census results on ichthyofaunal communities in the reef revealed high abundance and low levels of species richness, pouting, Trisopterus luscus Linnaeus, 1758 being the most common fish species found. Concerning NAR socio-economic impact, results from direct site observations (DSOs) showed that only some small-scale fishing vessels were eligible to operate on the NAR area. Thus, comparatively to non-AR areas nearby reef use by fishing vessels differs according to spatial and temporal strata. In what perception was concerned, the NAR has contributed to fish aggregation, though being populated mostly by small fish. Fishers have stated that some factors seemed to have changed after reef deployment. Notwithstanding, the NAR may have been a valuable contribution to an apparently overall socio-economic positive impact on the local fishing community that can be corroborated by the presence of good biological indicators.
- AR Mobile Application to Enhance the Birdwatching ExperiencePublication . Venâncio, José; Marto, Anabela; Ascenso, Rita Margarida Teixeira; Rodrigues, Nuno; Gonçalves, Alexandrino José MarquesGuard@Lis application was developed to ease the birdwatching activity. The main purpose was to support the discovery and identification of bird species along a trail, encouraging the preservation and protection of nature. To create a new bird observation perspective since augmented reality features were developed to enhance the experience of birdwatching, ensuring the chance to watch even the most elusive birds. Adding animated 3D models of some birds allows the observation of these species that, for several reasons, may not be easy to encounter in their natural habitat when the user is making the trail. The solution is composed of a multiplatform app and a back-office. It is prepared to create routes with hotspots and improve the bird species list. This first version was designed with a route in the city of Leiria, having specific points along the way, defined for the observation of certain species. Guard@Lis application intends to encourage the didactic and educational facets, so the whole development process of this application was to create a guide that allows users to be able to identify and list the number of bird species found. At this stage, the app allows its users to trail the main historical and tourist points of Leiria and collect the bird species observed.

- Energy-Efficient and Portable Least Squares Prediction for Image Coding on a Mobile GPUPublication . Cordeiro, Pedro; Falcao, Gabriel; Domingues, Patrício; Rodrigues, Nuno; Faria, SergioLeast squares prediction is a technique used to foresee pixel values during image coding by finding the minimum square error of neighbouring pixels. It has shown considerable quality gains especially for complex images with high variations in pixel intensities. The drawback of this technique consists of high computational complexity, consuming the most significant part of processing time and resources available, which makes it difficult to implement in fast, lossy image coders. One challenge is therefore to reduce the computational time of this predictor, namely through the use of new parallel programming techniques, making it more attractive for state-of-the-art coder-decoders. Also, new algorithmic propositions are made, trying to reduce the time spent in exchange for rate-distortion performance. These propositions are senseful since this predictor is used not only in lossless image coding, but also in lossy as well. Another aim of this article is to analyze energy efficiency among different types of platforms for this signal processing algorithm. Comparisons are provided on parallel computing processors ranging from very powerful Graphics Computing Units (GPUs) to mobile General-Purpose GPUs.

- IT/IST/IPLeiria Report on JPEG PCC Core Experiment 4.1: Attention ModelsPublication . Ghafari, Mohammadreza; Guarda, André; Rodrigues, Nuno; Pereira, FernandoContext and Objective: In the JPEG Pleno PC dataset, there are some PCs (e.g., sparse PCs) which are more ‘difficult’ to code and may benefit from improvements in the JPEG PCC VM DL coding model.
- IT/IST/IPLeiria Report on JPEG PCC Core Experiment 4.2: Sparse ConvolutionsPublication . Guarda, André; Rodrigues, Nuno; Pereira, FernandoContext and Objective: The current VM uses a dense 3D representation with dense convolutions Problem: Heavy in computation complexity, cannot encode a full point cloud at once; Underperforms for sparse point cloud Objective: Implement the DL models in the VM with a sparse tensor representation, and verify its performance
- Reconstruction and generation of virtual heritage sitesPublication . Rodrigues, Nuno; Magalhães, L.; Moura, J.; Chalmers, A.Traditionally procedural modelling techniques are commonly used to generate new structures and are presently established in several areas such as video games and computer animated movies. However they may also be used in heritage applications to efficiently produce models of non-existing worlds for which there is some kind of knowledge (e.g. floor plans, photographs) to support the reconstruction of realistic environments. Similarly they may also be used to support the generation of distinct possibilities that allow experts to draw some conclusions or conceive different hypotheses about lost worlds. The present paper shows the benefits and constraints that may arise from the use of such techniques in virtual heritage applications. Furthermore, a whole method is proposed, for the reconstruction and generation of virtual heritage traversable house models, provided through the means of a grammar, demonstrated with the reconstruction and generation of several Roman houses from the heritage site of Conimbriga, Portugal.
- Silent television: S_TVPublication . Silva, Emanuel; Maximiano, Filipa; Silva, Mateus; Ferreira, Rui; Rodrigues, NunoThis paper presents a solution that allows the users of a certain place to hear the sound of a TV, even if they are in a noisy environment. This gives the users a more efficient way to hear the sound of televisions in places where the volume of noise is high. The solution, named "s_TV" comprises two modules: the transmitter and the receiver. The transmitter module is composed by equipment to capture and transmit sound from the TV to smartphones/tablets Android. This equipment is connected to the TV and a router and transmits the sound through a network to Android devices. It can also transmit other types of information, such as the TV settings. An application was also developed to allow the configuration and handling of the servers that emit the sound of televisions. The receiver module resulted in a mobile application that allows the user to choose in a very simple and intuitive way, a particular TV channel and, subsequently, receive and play the sound on the mobile device, in real time. In addition, other features are available such as recording the sound played and sharing it on social networks. The tests conducted indicate that the solution may also be used in real-world scenarios with a scalable number of users, without compromising the services available on existing Wi-Fi networks.
