- A adaptação da firma ao ambiente internacional de negóciosPublication . Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Serra, Fernando; Reis, NunoEste trabalho versa sobre a importância da adaptação da firma ao ambiente de negócios internacional (IBE). A adaptação é considerada como um processo dinâmico e direcionado internamente que leva à firma a co-evoluir com o ambiente externo. A habilidade de adaptar-se a diferentes ambientes internacionais de negócios é desenvolvida ao longo do tempo pelas experiências da firma e construída nas suas rotinas. Sugere-se que a adaptação incorpora tanto os elementos da estratégia planejada como uma variação aleatória na procura por picos locais, dado a racionalidade limitada, imperfeição de informação e o atual conjunto de recursos e capacitações. A habilidade de adaptação ao ambiente é uma potencial fonte de vantagem competitiva para a corporação multinacional.
- An overview of three decades of mergers and acquisitions researchPublication . Reis, Nuno; Carvalho, Fernando; Ferreira, JoséMergers and acquisitions (M&A) have long attracted managers’ attention and have been researched in different perspectives and using different theories. In this study we grasp the wealth of extant research in the field of M&As. We conducted a bibliometric study of 635 articles on strategic management and international business research published in 34 highly ranked management journals between 1983 and 2012. We performed citation, co-citation and factor analyses to uncover the issues examined by scholars, the main theoretical approaches and themes researched. The results show a relative shift from economic and financial approaches to knowledge-based and organizational learning perspectives in recent years. There was also an evolution from assessing the performance of firms after an M&A to seeking an understanding of what may drive synergy creation after the integration process. Furthermore we observed an increasing interest in cross-border M&As. We discuss our findings, identifying gaps and suggesting paths for future research.
- A bibliometric study of the cultural models in international business researchPublication . Reis, Nuno; Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Santos, João Carvalho; Serra, Fernando RibeiroCulture and the influence of national cultures and cultural differences have been widely studied in International Business (IB) research especially over the past three decades. To better understand what culture actually means and its implications on firms’ international operations, several cultural models and taxonomies have been put forward. In this paper we review the main cultural models in the extant IB research – Hofstede’s (1980), Hall’s (1976) and Troompenaars’ (1993) – and Kogut and Singh’s (1988) concept of cultural distance. In a bibliometric study of over 3,600 articles published in seven top ranked journals for IB research, we examine citations and co-citations to assess the relative use of the cultural models and the ties binding authors and theories studied. This study offers a wealth of information on the current state of IB-related research using culture that may be used to better understand the intellectual structure of the sub-field of cultural issues in IB studies but also to identify gaps for future inquiry. The results help setting a profile of the network of knowledge and permit us to conclude that Hofstede’s (1980) taxonomy on cultural characteristics is the most cited cultural taxonomy and holds ties to many of the core streams of IB-related research. In fact, despite the well-known criticisms, there is an increasing use of Hofstede’s dimensions.

Reis, NunoThe financial and economic crisis the World has faced from 2008 was the starting point for the thorough and systematic review of the World Pankaj Ghemawat offers us in the book World 3.0. The global crisis, with strong effects in several countries and industries, has shattered the convictions on the benefits of globalization. Ghemawat proposes analyzing and provide a factual answer of 2 fundamental questions: 1) are the alleged benefits of market integration greater than market failures it arises? and 2) does it make sense to reduce – instead of increasing – the integration of markets to make the problems smaller and easier to address? The answer to these questions offer the readers a data-driven perspective of globalization and a simple understanding of the leading market failures commonly associated to globalization. Ghemawat also puts forward an avenue for the future – the World 3.0 – where there is no trade-off between further integration and greater regulation of markets.
- Caraterização do poder local na Comunidade Intermunicipal da Região de Leiria: forma e género na admissão dos dirigentes intermédios de 2o grauPublication . Caçador, Solange; Marques, Tânia; Reis, Nuno; Reis, NunoO procedimento administrativo dedicado ao recrutamento e seleção dos dirigentes superiores na administração pública em Portugal, em geral, e na administração local, em particular, está regulamentado por legislação própria, sendo que a análise e a avaliação do procedimento subjacente ao processo administrativo é de extrema importância. Assim, o presente estudo tem como objetivo principal a análise do procedimento administrativo dedicado ao recrutamento e seleção em termos de forma e género de dirigentes intermédios de 2o grau dos dez municípios que integram a Comunidade Intermunicipal da Região de Leiria, no mandato municipal que decorreu entre 2017 a 2021. Em termos de método, recorreu-se à abordagem qualitativa e exploratória, com um total de 215 documentos pesquisados no Diário da República Eletrónico e mapas de pessoal dos dez municípios que integram a Comunidade Intermunicipal da Região de Leiria.
- Cross-border mergers and acquisitions: a bibliometric review and future research avenuesPublication . Reis, Nuno; Carvalho, Fernando; Ferreira, JoséCross-border mergers and acquisitions (CBMAs) are an important mode of international expansion and have attracted substantial scholarly attention in the last decades. The extant literature on CBMAs is fragmented and often presents contradictory perspectives which hinder the researchers’ ability to understand the phenomenon. Therefore it is useful to analyse the extant literature on CBMAs, to make sense of what has been published, in a systematic and objective way. In this paper we conduct a bibliometric review of CBMA research over a 20-year period (1994–2013). Using a sample of 256 articles published in 69 journals we performed citation, co-citation and factor analyses, structural and longitudinal, to understand the most influential works and to observe the evolution of the themes and theoretical approaches used. We identified the importance of culture-related works as well as the increasing importance of resource-and knowledge-related approaches, whereas finance/economics perspectives have a decreasing influence.

A obra, resultado de uma tese de doutoramento, oferece uma abordagem institucional à problemática do empreendedorismo. A abordagem institucional estabelece as bases para um estudo empírico sobre a realidade de Cabo Verde que permite validar as relações propostas. A abordagem institucional selecionada é particularmente adequada para abordar a questão do empreendedorismo em países em desenvolvimento. As condições institucionais, nomeadamente os défices em instituições que potenciem o empreendedorismo, serão um fator distintivo determinante entre economias desenvolvidas e economias em desenvolvimento.
- A empresa e o meio nas teorias económicas da empresa: uma leitura longitudinalPublication . Contudo, persistem grandes divergências acerca do papel das diferentes forças que influenciam o crescimento e os objectivos das empresas. Sintetizar os principais contributos dos autores mais relevantes das diferentes teorias económicas parece útil. Assim, neste artigo fazemos uma breve revisão das teorias da empresa desde a teoria neoclássica até ao conceito de capacidades dinâmicas e o impacto nas empresas das alterações do ambiente onde se inserem.
- Entrepreneurship research: a bibliometric study of the EnANPADs 1997-2008Publication . Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Santos, João Carvalho; Serra, Fernando A. Ribeiro; Reis, NunoWe have witnessed a fast growth in academic interest on entrepreneurship over the past two to three decades, although at disparate paces in different countries. A wealth of papers presented and published, books, dedicated journals, websites, professional and research groups have emerged accompanying this increased interest. It is thus important to understand what are these scholars studying. In this paper we examine the state of the art in entrepreneurship research in Brazil, by scrutinizing the entire track record of the papers presented at the EnANPAD over a twelve years period: 1997 to 2008. The results of the bibliometric analysis revealed that entrepreneurship research maintains a broad spectrum of interests, focusing both on contextual, individual and process issues. Less visible is a unified theoretical background or the use of established theories foundational to other management disciplines. It is notable the increase in the Brazilian empirical, theoretical and case-study based entrepreneurship research. This paper is organized in four main sections. First, we review the entrepreneurship literature, followed by a description of the method employed, the third, presents and discusses the results of the bibliometric study, and we conclude with a broad discussion, conclusions to be drawn, limitations and avenues for future research.
