- Aspects of qualitative research in times of pandemicPublication . Oliveira, Ellen Synthia Fernandes de; Presado, Maria Helena; Baixinho, Cristina LavaredaIntroduction The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has posed complex challenges for researchers, not only because of the emergence of a new disease, with an atypical epidemiological behavior, but also because of the implicit challenge to train the population for prevention and mitigation measures. It is worth mentioning that some aspects related to research have also been noticed in this pandemic period, mainly in epidemiological and experimental studies, which have proved to be fruitful. In the same way, it happens with research on people’s experience, in their different life contexts, which leads, in addition to transformations in areas such as (tele) work, online education, social isolation, among others. In this sense, we note as a positive point the growing appreciation of qualitative studies that allow researchers, with a more focused praxis, an understanding of a person’s experience and the uniqueness of their needs(1-2). This change was possible because the researchers were able to adapt their qualitative research, from the study design to the introduction of the results in the clinic(2), to this ‘new reality’.
- Contributions of mindfulness in high-risk pregnancy: a mixed methods systematic reviewPublication . Dutra, Irina Neves; Seixinho, Sandra; Baixinho, Cristina; Presado, Maria Helena; García-Fernández, RubénIntroduction Experiencing a high-risk pregnancy entails pathological situations with repercussions that can interfere with maternal-fetal well-being and increase maternal anxiety. Mindfulness emerges as one of the techniques used to improve the quality of care in the transition period resulting from pregnancy, which, through meditative practice, seeks to understand observation and the nature of the lived experience, resulting in a progressive state of clarity and awareness. Objective This review assessed the contributions of applying mindfulness in high-risk pregnancies. The review considered experimental, quasi-experimental studies, randomized controlled trials and non-randomized controlled trials. Observational studies were also considered. Evidence published in the last 5 years was considered. Methods This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for systematic reviews of mixed methods using a convergent integrated approach to synthesis and integration. We searched for published and unpublished English, Portuguese and Spanish-language studies and grey literature. CINAHL Ultimate, MEDLINE (via Pubmed), Web of Science, Academic Search Complete, EBSCO Host Open Dissertations and Open Access Theses and Dissertations were searched in April–May 2024. Two authors screened titles and abstracts before full-text screening and data extraction. Two authors reviewed the extracted data. Results Ten articles were included in the review: 5 randomized controlled trials, 3 quasi-experimental studies and 2 mixed-methods studies. 9 studies measured the effectiveness of the application of mindfulness-based interventions on high-risk pregnant women and 1 assessed the acceptance of mindfulness intervention. Six studies measured the effects of the application of mindfulness in high-risk pregnant women in depressive symptoms, two reported the outcomes in stress, five on anxiety, two on psychological well-being, one on gestational weight gain, one in prenatal attachment and another in sleep quality. Conclusions Long term reduction of depressive symptoms, anxiety and stress and increased psychological well-being are contributions of mindfulness on high-risk pregnant women. The existing evidence on other contributions of the application of mindfulness is limited, further research being necessary.

Presado, Maria Helena; Lavareda Baixinho, Cristina; Ribeiro, JaimeO aumento dos estudos qualitativos e mistos na saúde tem esbatido a dicotomia quanti/qualitativo, permitindo a diversificação de métodos e técnicas. Ao contrário das concepções tradicionalistas da investigação, baseadas no modelo biomédico e no paradigma pós-positivista, a investigação qualitativa traduz um significado e uma interpretação aos achados que permite um maior desenvolvimento do cidadão, inserido no seu espaço social e conceptualiza o mundo real com uma maior susceptibilidade de transformação. Uma apreciação multidimensional, contribui para o desenvolvimento do conhecimento empírico, estético, pessoal, ético, biomecânico, entre outros. Um paradigma mais construtivista tem, progressivamente, aumentado a perspectiva de complementaridade e até de transdisciplinaridade em relação aos fenómenos da saúde. A ciência e a diversificação dos saberes são cruciais para o desenvolvimento da saúde individual e coletiva. A relação do ser humano com a saúde e com os profissionais é complexa, envolve uma multiplicidade de fatores, nem sempre fáceis de identificar e controlar, que é influenciada e influencia as múltiplas relações, não podendo ser dissociada da experiência individual.
- Qualitative Research: The Heart of Evidence-Based PracticePublication . The sheer volume of studies, methodological diversity, scarce resources, and professionals’ difficulties in locating, appraising, and implementing evidence all contribute. In addition, there is often a lack of clear, evidence-based health-policy guidelines. In addition, there is a predominant positivist paradigm in the training of most health professionals, which makes it challenging to introduce the results of qualitative studies into practice. We believe that qualitative research provides a unique insight into the experiences, needs, difficulties, and choices of people going through transitions between health and illness. This is a theoretical paper based on a narrative literature review, the authors aim to reflect on the results of qualitative healthcare research, the difficulties in translating the knowledge obtained by more constructivist and interpretative methods, and the gains that can be made from an Evidence-Based Practice supported by the results of qualitative studies that make it possible to respect the patient’s values and preferences, allowing person-centered care. Studies that enable the exploration of experiences, perspectives, and meanings in complex areas, such as self-care, behavioral change, and adherence to therapeutic regimens, support health professionals’ clinical decision-making. This support reflects the multifaceted nature of human experiences in care settings and is vital for understanding phenomena both in isolation and in relation to other research approaches. Qualitative studies are the heart of evidence-based practice because they deepen and individualize knowledge about phenomena and make it possible to focus care on people, especially those with increased vulnerability.
