- Assistive mobile software for public transportationPublication . Silva, João De Sousa E; Silva, Catarina; Marcelino, Luís; Ferreira, Rui; Pereira, AntónioThe need of mobility on public transport for persons with visual impairment is mandatory. While traveling on a public transport, the simple ability to know the current location is almost impossible for such persons. To overcome this hurdle, we developed an assistive application that can alert its user to the proximity of all public transportation stops, giving emphasis to the chosen final stop. The application is adjustable to any transportation system and is particularly relevant to use in public transports that do not have any audio system available. The developed prototype runs on an Android OS device equipped with Global Positioning System (GPS). To ensure the highest possible level of reliability and to make it predictable to users, the application's architecture is free of as much dependencies as possible. Therefore, only GPS, or other localization mechanism, is required. The interface was designed to be suitable not only for talkback (Android's inbuilt screen-reader) aimed at blind users, but also for people with low vision that can still use their sight to check the screen. Thus, it was meant to be graphically simple and unobtrusive. It was tested by visual impaired persons leading to the conclusion that it demonstrates an existing need, and opens a new perspective in public transportation's accessibility.

- Evaluation of fatty acids profile as a useful tool towards valorization of by-products of agri-food industryPublication . Ferreira, Rui; Lourenço, Sílvia; Lopes, André; Andrade, Carlos; Câmara, José S.; Castilho, Paula; Perestelo, RosaWorldwide, the food industry generates a large number of by-products from a wide variety of sources. These by-products represent an interesting and economical source of added value components with potential functionalities and/or bioactivities, which might be explored for industrial purposes, encouraging and promoting the circular economy concept. In this context, the current work aimed to evaluate the fatty acids (FAs) profile using gas chromatography–flame ionization detector (GC–FID) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), as well as the determination of related health lipid indices (e.g., atherogenic (AI) and thrombogenic (TI)) as a powerful strategy to investigate the potential applications of different agri-food by-products for human nutrition and animal feeding. This work results showed that polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are the predominant group in grape pomace (72.7%), grape bunches (54.3%), and brewer’s spent grain (BSG, 59.0%), whereas carrot peels are dominated by monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs, 47.3%), and grape stems (46.2%), lees (from 50.8 to 74.1%), and potato peels (77.2%) by saturated fatty acids (SFAs). These findings represent a scientific basis for exploring the nutritional properties of agri-food by-products. Special attention should be given to grape pomace, grape bunches, and BSG since they have a high content of PUFAs (from 54.3 to 72.7%) and lower AI (from 0.11 to 0.38) and TI (from 0.30 to 0.56) indexes, suggesting their potential to provide a variety of health benefits against cardiovascular diseases including well-established hypotriglyceridemia and anti-inflammatory effects, products to which they are added.
- Hydrolysis of the phosphoanhydride linkage of cyclic ADP-ribose by the Mn2+-dependent ADP-ribose/CDP-alcohol pyrophosphatasePublication . Canales, José; Fernández, Ascensión; Rodrigues, Joaquim Rui; Ferreira, Rui; Ribeiro, João Meireles; Cabezas, Alicia; Costas, María Jesús; Cameselle, José CarlosCyclic ADP-ribose (cADPR) metabolism in mammals is catalyzed by NAD glycohydrolases (NADases) that, besides forming ADP-ribose, form and hydrolyze the N(1)-glycosidic linkage of cADPR. Thus far, no cADPR phosphohydrolase was known. We tested rat ADP-ribose/CDP-alcohol pyrophosphatase (ADPRibase-Mn) and found that cADPR is an ADPRibase-Mn ligand and substrate. ADPRibase-Mn activity on cADPR was 65-fold less efficient than on ADP-ribose, the best substrate. This is similar to the ADP-ribose/cADPR formation ratio by NADases. The product of cADPR phosphohydrolysis by ADPRibase-Mn was N(1)-(5-phosphoribosyl)-AMP, suggesting a novel route for cADPR turnover.
- Silent television: S_TVPublication . Silva, Emanuel; Maximiano, Filipa; Silva, Mateus; Ferreira, Rui; Rodrigues, NunoThis paper presents a solution that allows the users of a certain place to hear the sound of a TV, even if they are in a noisy environment. This gives the users a more efficient way to hear the sound of televisions in places where the volume of noise is high. The solution, named "s_TV" comprises two modules: the transmitter and the receiver. The transmitter module is composed by equipment to capture and transmit sound from the TV to smartphones/tablets Android. This equipment is connected to the TV and a router and transmits the sound through a network to Android devices. It can also transmit other types of information, such as the TV settings. An application was also developed to allow the configuration and handling of the servers that emit the sound of televisions. The receiver module resulted in a mobile application that allows the user to choose in a very simple and intuitive way, a particular TV channel and, subsequently, receive and play the sound on the mobile device, in real time. In addition, other features are available such as recording the sound played and sharing it on social networks. The tests conducted indicate that the solution may also be used in real-world scenarios with a scalable number of users, without compromising the services available on existing Wi-Fi networks.
