- Attitudes and perception of destination certification towards sustainable tourism developmentPublication . Chan, Tiffany Kit-Yee; Dias, Francisco Teixeira PintoSustainable tourism has been a topic of discussion for decades, but it is more relevant now than ever. Prior to COVID-19, many tourist destinations were grappling with the negative impacts of mass tourism. The global pandemic has caused international travel to pause temporarily, allowing certain tourism hotspots a much-needed break. However, without addressing the issue with appropriate measures, the crowds will return as will the consequences. Many destinations have taken the opportunity to reassess their sustainability practices by introducing improved destination management frameworks with sustainability strategies as the overarching theme of their recovery plan. Policy makers, destination managers, and tourism experts in the public and private sector are constantly seeking effective tools to better manage tourism and destination development in a sustainable manner. Certification is one of many tools available. Although not a new concept, it is well-known yet widely debated. Destination certification and assessment is an emerging trend, with more tourism destinations striving to become certified. There is also an increase in the number of ecolabels to choose from. However, tourism destinations are complex in nature, with multiple stakeholders and interest groups involved. Previous research has addressed challenges and opportunities affiliated with destination certification, but rarely from the perspective of tourism stakeholders in certified destinations. This study aims to address the impact of destination certification on tourism and sustainable development through the perspective of local tourism stakeholders in destination’s that have achieved certification.
- (Re)futuring Tourism Businesses: A Framework for a Sustainable Tourism Online CoursePublication . Oliveira, Nádia Carreira; Dias, Francisco Teixeira PintoFor the last two decades, the Travel & Tourism industry has gradually become one of the critical engines of the world’s economic and social development, while also a considerable contributor to unsustainable patterns and its consequent damaging effects. The COVID-19 pandemic that stormed the planet at the beginning of this year has created an inflexion point on the industry’s soaring growth trajectories, severely affecting and compromising both its current and future strength and vitality. Concurrently, it has presented time for reflection. The rhetoric for the need to transform the industry has underpinned the numerous pleas and expressed commitment from industry experts, to move beyond ‘business as usual’ and ‘build back better’, towards a shift to a more sustainable and equitable tourism. As a by-product of the internship at Turismo Centro de Portugal, this report consists of a framework proposal for a holistic, seven-week sustainable tourism free online course, to be provided by Turismo Centro de Portugal to its business stakeholders. The underlying idea relies on the assumption that businesses have an essential role to play in transforming the industry and thus, that education for sustainability is an imperative for encouraging them to become catalysing agents, in creating a novel and improved version of tourism and tackling its inherent challenges. Furthermore, as a Regional Tourism Organisation and due to the visibility and the interconnectedness with its stakeholders, Turismo Centro de Portugal is favourably positioned to promote and foster shared sustainable vision for the destination, namely through education. The framework hence serves the seminal purpose of urging Turismo Centro de Portugal to actively engage its business stakeholders to embark on a shared sustainable tourism quest. Given the complex nature of the tourism industry and the proposed objectives of the course, the literary review undertaken serves to substantiate its relevance, content and design structure. Grounded on a theoretical approach based on scientific and empirical research, statistical data and education industry benchmark research and analysis, it reaches the proposed result, both through deductive reasoning - from reading and critical analysis - and existing courses frameworks, framed under the economics, management, tourism, sustainability & sustainable development, innovation, marketing and leadership thematic. The framework is, however, not free from bias since it also relies on personal empirical and practical knowledge. This invariably means that the input from scholars and practitioners is essential.
- Revitalisation of culture as a tourism planning tool for small Island developing state: case study based in Rodrigues Island, Republic of MauritiusPublication . Agathe, Issana; Dias, Francisco Teixeira PintoInterest in cultural products in the tourism industry is increasing worldwide, and the World Tourism Organization predicts that the cultural tourism market will be one of the top five segments of the tourism market in the future. Local cultures are important features of a destination and become a flywheel for social and economic development thanks to tourism. Some tourism studies have highlighted the issue of cultural revitalization and/or how it should take place as a developing tool, especially for small developing island states (SIDS). This paper is based on a study undertaken in relation to SIDS and the field of research was mainly in Rodrigues Island, Republic of Mauritius. It explores the views that the local and international experts hold of cultural revitalisation as a tourism developing tool and analyse the main problems in the development of cultural products and the possibilities of enriching destinations by developing cultural tourism with a cultural offer, thus increasing the value of a comprehensive tourist offer and attracting a large number of tourists. Moreover, the focus of this paper is to analyse the concept of cultural tourism which can be an alternative form of sustainable tourism development. Sustainability is more than crucial for SIDS while developing its tourism industry. This qualitative research employed a Delphi method in collecting data from 11 experts. The inputs and comments of the experts have helped in providing important data for the good process of the research. The results have denoted that revitalising culture can be a tourism planning tool, however, there is a need to have the required resources, in terms of human, financial, and organisational. Those resources will help in the process of cultural tourism planning. The findings of the study suggest the importance of considering local people’s views during tourism development, the importance of having proper resources for the development, and proper strategies. This report concludes with a brief analysis of the key issues for this area of cultural policy in Rodrigues Island and recommendations on how to turn a cultural resource into a tourist attraction and achieve greater tourist satisfaction with their stay in a destination.
- The Influence of Creative Tourism on Sustainable Development of Tourism and Reduction of Seasonality – Case Study of ÓbidosPublication . Musikyan, Srbuhi; Dias, Francisco Teixeira PintoTourism remains one of the most fast growing and important industries in the world. It is hard to underestimate the importance and the spectrum of the benefits that tourism provides. On the other hand, nowadays, the increasing growth of tourism poses a range of challenges and problems that need to be solved. These challenges resonate in the emergence of the so called 'alternative' or sustainable forms of tourism, which deem to be an antidote against the harms the traditional forms of tourism cause to the environment and local communities. These new forms of tourism, among which is creative tourism, are reinforced by the new breed of tourists, who are no longer satisfied with the static offer of tourism but rather prefer the dynamic one. The present research shows on the case of Óbidos the potential of creative tourism to meet these new needs of modern tourists while also solving number of problems that many destinations face, namely seasonality in tourism, as well as how creative tourism contributes to the sustainable development of tourism.
