- O Museu Nacional Grão Vasco e o Centro Histórico de ViseuPublication . Mateus, José Manuel Gorgulho; Brasão, Inês Paulo Cordeiro; Pires, Ana Luísa Oliveira GonçalvesA presente Dissertação de Mestrado aborda a relação entre o Centro Histórico de Viseu e o Desenvolvimento Sustentável, através de um workshop criativo para o Serviço Educativo do Museu Nacional Grão Vasco, no contexto da função social dos museus. Propõe a seguinte questão para investigação: “Pode o MNGV contribuir para a educação sobre o Desenvolvimento Sustentável do Centro Histórico de Viseu?” O projeto foi desenvolvido na perspetiva da recente “Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape”, da Unesco, que representa a visão mais atual sobre esta problemática, e o público-alvo foi constituído por um grupo de 11 estudantes pré-universitários. É um projeto pluridisciplinar, porque convoca diversas áreas de conhecimento, com destaque para os Centros Históricos e o Património, o Desenvolvimento Sustentável, o Turismo, a Museologia e os Serviços Educativos, a Educação não formal. E transdisciplinar porque se situa precisamente na intersecção e diálogo entre todas estas áreas. Utilizou-se uma metodologia qualitativa, mais flexível e apropriada para explorar novas áreas de estudo. A metodologia incluíu o desenvolvimento de um site de apoio ao projeto, a observação etnográfica de diversos eventos, e a realização de um evento final na Sé Catedral. Confirmou-se que: (1) existe uma relação estreita entre o Centro Histórico de Viseu, o Museu Nacional Grão Vasco e a Sé Catedral, com expressão no Turismo; (2) o conceito de "função social dos museus" pode englobar o desenvolvimento de atividades sobre o Desenvolvimento Sustentável, a partir da coleção do museu; (3) é possível identificar, no grupo em estudo, um conjunto significativo de idealizações pré-formadas sobre este assunto; (4) o formato de workshop criativo é adequado, mas a sua configuração bem como a composição dos grupos e o envolvimento da escola são fatores que devem ser repensados; (5) existe um défice significativo ao nível da literacia sobre Desenvolvimento Sustentável. Recomendações: (1) Configurar uma atividade de acordo com os resultados desta dissertação, pelo Serviço Educativo do Museu, que desenvolva a literacia sobre Desenvolvimento Sustentável, na formulação integral das Nações Unidas; (2) Estudos adicionais, particularmente sobre (a) o Centro Histórico na perspetiva dos moradores recentes (jovens) e do comércio e serviços disponíveis na zona e (b) a dimensão da procura do turismo em relação ao Centro Histórico.
- Perceptions of residents and hospitality agents towards tourism impacts on sustainability: The Case of UNESCO Literature Creative town of ÓbidosPublication . Cláudio, Sílvia de Carvalho; Brasão, Inês Paulo Cordeiro; Schön, MichaelThis master thesis focuses on the perceptions of residents and hospitality agents, of the tourism impacts in the historic walled town of Óbidos, classified as a Portuguese monument and part of UNESCO's Creative Cities network, as Literature Town. In recent years, the historic center of Óbidos has seen an influx of tourists and day visitors, with a consequent overcrowding of the narrow streets, increase of waste, excessive traffic, rise of costs of goods and housing, abandonment of the town center, by the local residents, and fewer local service infrastructures. It is certain that the historic center of Óbidos has seen, over the last decade, an economic boost in the tourism offer, with almost all the businesses and services inside the walls being tourism related. The town hall, the parish church, social security and finance offices are of the few infrastructures used by local residents, who are non-tourism related. The following master thesis examines the positive and negative economic, socio-cultural and environmental perceptions of residents and the hospitality agents, in the historic town. The study was conducted through the use of two different surveys: one administered to local hospitality agents managers and one to the residents, in the historic center. Furthermore, an interview to the town's mayor was also conducted.
- Power and Empowerment: community-based tourism and the perception of empowerment experienced by women in the rural village of Paramin, Trinidad & TobagoPublication . Touche, Khadesha La; Caetano, Marta Lúcia Clemente de Aguilar; Brasão, Inês Paulo CordeiroEmpowerment as a theory has been studied within the tourism industry in many dimensions such as social constructs. However, in the Caribbean, gender-focused studies on women’s role in tourism have mainly focused on sex tourism. Women meanwhile play a larger and crucial part in the tourism workforce in the Caribbean, the most tourism-dependent zone in the world according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). As a marginalised group, their activity in community-based tourism sectors provide benefits for them that spread to their wider community and support their empowerment. These activities can provide new niche tourism activities, preserve cultural heritage as well as provide benefits such as employment for other marginalised societal groups. Taking into account the lack of research in this area, studies must be done in order to support sustainable tourism policy development in the Caribbean. This dissertation thus has the goal of examining the perception of empowerment experienced by women in tourism businesses in rural Trinidad. Using the village of Paramin as the backdrop, semi open interviews were conducted to give voice to the village women’s experiences and shed light on the way they have perceived their empowerment through the leveraging of their tourism-related businesses and activities for tourism development in Trinidad & Tobago.
