Abstract(s)
The increase in plastic production and consumption has led to significant environmental challenges. Sustainable plastic management within the circular economy emerges as a strategic approach to mitigate environmental impacts, promoting the reuse and recycling of these materials. Oceans are crucial for life on Earth, providing a wide range of ecosystem services that sustain biodiversity and human well-being. However, the growing amount of plastic in the oceans poses a significant threat to these marine ecosystems. The specific goal of this research is to address plastic pollution in the oceans and actions like those of Ocean Cleanup to mitigate the harmful effects of this pollution. Plastic reaches the oceans through countries that do not engage in any collection or treatment of this plastic. It is also known where the largest concentrations of plastic in the oceans are found. It is essential to understand how plastic reaches the oceans, and how it is collected and treated. This gives rise to the need for a case study with the selected institution. The dissertation will also explore the concept of Circular Economy, its principles, and its environmental benefits.
