- Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in the Elderly: The Perspective of Nursing StudentsPublication . Therefore, intervention to increase individuals’ knowledge is essential if action is to be taken to promote a healthy lifestyle with support from health professionals for decision making on choices leading to behavioral change. Taking into account the growing aging population, nurses and nursing students have to develop interventions to promote health and prevent disease in these people, in order to keep them healthy and with quality of life. This study aims to understand how nursing students’ experiences in a clinical teaching context contributed to the development of their competencies in the promotion of health and prevention of disease in the elderly. Method: Qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive study carried out with ten students about to finish a graduate nursing course in a higher education institution in the South of Portugal. This study was carried out through narratives, one of the most common data collection procedures in social and health investigations. The content analysistechnique, more specifically the thematic categorical analysis, was used for data analysis. The study received authorization from the Ethics Committee of the institution where it took place. Results: Three categories were found: “Strategies to promote health and prevent disease in the elderly”, “Health improvements from the implementation of the strategies to promote health and prevent disease in the elderly”, and “The impact your participation in these strategies to promote health and prevent disease in the elderly had on your formative process”. Conclusion: The students developed competencies during their clinical teaching experiences through the implementation of strategies of health promotion and disease prevention adapted to/focused on the needs of the elderly.
- Algorithm for transitional care for caregivers of dependent older adults: A validation studyPublication . Gomes, Thawanna Jeremias Barbosa; Ferreira, Bruna Alexandra da Silva; Baixinho, Cristina Lavareda; Ferreira, ÓscarTo construct and validate an algorithm for transitional care for caregivers of dependent older adults. Method: This was a methodological study developed in three phases: a literature review, designing an algorithm, and its validation by a peer panel with twentyseven experts selected according to pre-defined inclusion criteria. Results: The algorithm predicted interventions in transitional care (hospital stay, at discharge, and 30 days at home post-discharge) aimed at the exercise of the caregiver role; needs assessment; training in care management of dependent older adults and management of self-care, and ensuring continuity of care (of older adults and caregivers). Conclusion: Agreement between expert raters and a reliability test of 0.92 indicate that the algorithm can be used by professionals to decide the transitional care interventions to be administered to the caregivers of dependent older adults. Future studies should be conducted to perform its clinical validation.
- Nursing Interventions for Head and Neck Cancer Patients That Promote Embracement in the Operating Room/Surgery Unit: A Near-Empty Scoping ReviewPublication . They are hostile invasive neoplastic diseases that negatively impact individuals’ functionality. The aim of this study was to map the nursing interventions to be carried out with head and neck cancer patients in preoperative nursing consultations. Given the study’s aim, a scoping review was chosen based on the principles advocated by the Joanna Briggs Institute and using the CINAHL and Medline databases. The review was conducted in April and May 2021. Of the 56 articles obtained, only 1 met the inclusion criteria, indicating a gap in studies about head and neck cancer patients. Preoperative nursing consultations allow patients and family members to ask questions and voice concerns. The nursing intervention identified by the review included interviews, in which nurses explain the concepts related to the diagnosis, the procedures involved in the surgery, and the inherent consequences. Flyers containing images and photos can be used to facilitate interpretation.
- Sense of Belonging and Evidence Learning: A Focus Group StudyPublication . Baixinho, Cristina Lavareda; Ferreira, Óscar; Medeiros, Marcelo; Fernandes de Oliveira, Ellen SynthiaAbstract: A sense of belonging is a prerequisite for the professional and clinical success of nursing students. The objective of this study was to elucidate whether students’ participation in projects oriented toward translating knowledge into clinical practice promoted a sense of belonging and assisted with their integration into clinical practice services. Fifteen students were distributed into two focus groups, and the study was carried out by means of a semi-structured interview script using the research question as a starting point for directing the discussion toward more specific topics. Qualitative analysis followed a predefined protocol. WebQDA® software was used to organize and analyze the findings, as well as to increase their rigor. The study design was approved by an ethics committee. Three categories related to belongingness emerged from the data analysis: integration, participation, and collaborative work. Belongingness was a central element for integrating students into services, and it influenced their clinical education, their motivation, and the quality of their experience. It also allowed them to learn about evidence, communicate science, carry out evidence based practice, and develop competencies. Concurrently, student integration was facilitated by the sharing of knowledge between professors and nurses, and the existence of ongoing work with clinical practice services.
