- 3D PARTICLE SYSTEMS FOR AUDIO APPLICATIONSPublication . Fonseca, NunoAlthough particle systems are well know for their use in computer graphics, their application in sound is very rare or almost non-existent. This paper presents a conceptual model for the use of particle systems in audio applications, using a full rendering system with virtual microphones: several virtual particles are spread over a virtual 3D space, where each particle reproduces one of the available audio streams (or a modified version), and the overall sound is captured by virtual microphones. Such system can be used on several audio-related areas like sound design, 3D mixing, reverb/impulse response design, granular synthesis, audio up-mixing, and impulse response up-mixing.
- 802.21-MPA-IMS ArchitecturePublication . Rodrigues, Carlos Miguel de Jesus; Rabadão, Carlos; Pereira, AntónioMobility has become a keyword nowadays with the evolution of mobile devices market and proliferation of realtime services. IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is a single, standardized service framework that supports voice, video, data and messaging services, but does not provide seamless mobility for packet based sessions. This paper purposes an IMS architecture with IEEE 802.21 and media-independent pre-authentication (MPA) integrated. IEEE 802.21 can enable this seamless mobility in IMS and, additionally, MPA provides a secure handover optimization scheme, reducing, as a consequence, handover latency. The main goal of this architecture is to provide seamless and secure handovers between different access technologies in an IMS-based environment.
- Alternative heavy tailed models in seismologyPublication . Felgueiras, Miguel; Martins, João; Santos, RuiGreat earthquakes are commonly considered as the ones with moment magnitude (Mw ) above or equal to 8.0. Since these earthquakes can destroy entire communities located near the epicentre, the search of physical laws that explain the energy released by them is an important issue. There is a connection between the radiated energy of an earthquake, its magnitude and its seismic moment (M 0). Thence, when fitting a heavy or an extremely heavy tailed distribution to a seismic moment dataset, we are in fact adjusting a mathematical model which explains the amount of energy released by these great seisms. Therefore, the main goal of this work is to study the more appropriated Pareto based models (the most used family in this field) when explaining the seismic moment of the great earthquakes. With this purpose in mind, we selected two different catalogs that accommodate recent events and are considered more accurate than other catalogs used in previous works. We conclude that the traditional Pareto distribution remains a good choice to deal with this kind of data, but Log-Pareto lead to higher p-values and Location-scale Pareto is better fitted to the biggest events.
- Comparative Cases From Portuguese Social Innovation Public PolicyPublication . Ciccarino, Irene; Rodrigues, SusanaInnovation generally involves poorly structured problems, which do not have an obvious solution within the knowledge available. The solution is usually evolutionary, resulting from several attempts and refinements. Social innovation aims to address social problems and needs, which happen regardless of economic odds. This innovation can be an answer to a social need by embedded solutions and by different stakeholders' mobilization to sustain effective social change. It also can be about the best resource use or cost reduction, mainly the social ones. Portugal has developed a pioneer public policy to encourage entrepreneurship, social innovation and boost the social investment market. The Portugal Social Innovation Programme (PIS), links investors and social entrepreneurial initiatives (SEI) and offers support to structure SEI in a sustainable way by providing resources and network. Insofar SEIs accomplish the contracted results, PIS rewards their private investors. Thence public and private capital share risks, and the public capital is driven to the most effective initiatives. PIS enables the experimentation needed for innovation building and increases the chance of public services improvement, contributing to enhance the welfare-state. In this sense, this research goal is to describe three revealing cases of SEIs supported by PIS, highlighting innovation features and contextualizing theory. The data was collected by 3 semi-structured in-depth interviews which responses could be found in a database with 120 cases built by an online survey. The thematic content analysis was conducted applying codes from theory and PIS’s investment criteria. Then cases were compared to understand the outcomes of investment criteria and to examine theoretical features. The study discusses PIS investment criteria and presents SEIs types endorsed by it. Thus, it helps disclosure and stakeholders' expectations management. It also enables understanding the relationship between innovation, business model sustainability, and social value creation in the Portuguese context. The SEIs analyzed endorses PIS's innovative potential in building networks and foster the entrepreneurial ecosystem. This study also poses a new way to identify and compare different kinds of social values paving the way for a less subjective and tricky assessment routine.
- A Customizable Web Platform to Manage Standards Compliance of Information Security and Cybersecurity AuditingPublication . Antunes, Mário; Maximiano, Marisa; Gomes, RicardoInformation security and cybersecurity are key subjects in modern enterprises' management, being ISO-27001:2013, NIST Cybersecurity Framework and ISO-27009 some of the most implemented international frameworks and standards. Their main goal is to globally reduce the risk, by leveraging enterprises' competitiveness in global markets and enhancing business processes and collaborators' cyber awareness. Auditing processes examine and assess a list of predefined controls. For each control, a set of corrective measures could be proposed, to increase its compliance with the standard being used. These processes are time-consuming, involve on-site intervention by specialized consulting teams on the intervened enterprises, and a set of status reports of all the interventions should be elaborated and delivered. The existing auditing information systems are not developed to meet Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) requirements, as they are mostly proprietary and expensive, ground usually on off-the-shelf applications, and are not generic to be used by several standards with different checklists and auditing methodologies. In this paper, a generic and web-integrated cybersecurity auditing information system is described. Its architecture, design, and data model enable it to be used in a wide set of auditing processes, by loading a predefined controls checklist assessment and their corresponding mitigation tasks list. It was designed to meet both SMEs and large enterprises' requirements, and stores auditing and intervention-related data in a relational database. The information system was tested on an ISO-27001:2013 information security auditing project, which has integrated fifty SMEs. The results obtained during the project are promising and reveal the appropriateness of using this information system in further similar auditing processes.
- Defining Semantic Meta-hashtags for Twitter ClassificationPublication . Costa, Joana; Silva, Catarina; Antunes, Mário; Ribeiro, BernardeteGiven the wide spread of social networks, research efforts to retrieve information using tagging from social networks communications have increased. In particular, in Twitter social network, hashtags are widely used to define a shared context for events or topics. While this is a common practice often the hashtags freely introduced by the user become easily biased. In this paper, we propose to deal with this bias defining semantic meta-hashtags by clustering similar messages to improve the classification. First, we use the user-defined hashtags as the Twitter message class labels. Then, we apply the meta-hashtag approach to boost the performance of the message classification. The meta-hashtag approach is tested in a Twitter-based dataset constructed by requesting public tweets to the Twitter API. The experimental results yielded by comparing a baseline model based on user-defined hashtags with the clustered meta-hashtag approach show that the overall classification is improved. It is concluded that by incorporating semantics in the meta-hashtag model can have impact in different applications, e.g. recommendation systems, event detection or crowdsourcing.
- An easy-to-use tool to inject DoS and spoofing networking attacksPublication . Almeida, Rafaela; Pacheco, Vasco; Antunes, Mário; Frazão, LuísComputer network attacks are vast and negatively impact the infrastructure and its applicational services. From a cyber offensive and defensive perspective, there are a plethora of tools to craft and inject customized malicious packets in the network and exploit operating systems and application vulnerabilities. Those tools are however hard to operate by practitioners with less knowledge on networking fundamentals and students in the early stage of their studies. This paper proposes an easy-to-use application tool that can produce customized Denial of Service (DoS) and spoofing attacks. It was developed in Python and takes advantage of scapy library to process and inject network packets. A set of experiments was made, and the results obtained show the efficiency and accuracy of the attacks, by impairing the proper functioning of the victim's machines.
- EasyBDI: Near Real-Time Data Analytics over Heterogeneous Data SourcesPublication . Silva, Bruno; Moreira, José; Costa, Rogério Luís de C.The large volume of currently available data creates several opportunities for sciences and industry, especially with the application of data analytics. But also raises challenges that make unfeasible the use of batch-based ETL processes. Indeed, near real-time data analytics is a requirement in several domains as an alternative to traditional data warehouses. In the last years, big data platforms have been developed to enable query execution over distributed data sources. However, they do not deal with subject-oriented analysis, do not provide data distribution transparency, or do not assist with schema mapping and integration. In this demonstration, we present EasyBDI. It's a near real-time big data analytics prototype that enables users to run queries over heterogeneous data sources based on global logical abstractions created by the system and provides some usual concepts of data warehouse systems, like facts and dimensions. We use two motivating scenarios, one based on three years of real data on photovoltaic energy production and consumption, and the other based on the SSB+ benchmark. We will also present implementation challenges, issues, solutions, and insights.
