- 802.21-MPA-IMS ArchitecturePublication . Rodrigues, Carlos Miguel de Jesus; Rabadão, Carlos; Pereira, AntónioMobility has become a keyword nowadays with the evolution of mobile devices market and proliferation of realtime services. IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is a single, standardized service framework that supports voice, video, data and messaging services, but does not provide seamless mobility for packet based sessions. This paper purposes an IMS architecture with IEEE 802.21 and media-independent pre-authentication (MPA) integrated. IEEE 802.21 can enable this seamless mobility in IMS and, additionally, MPA provides a secure handover optimization scheme, reducing, as a consequence, handover latency. The main goal of this architecture is to provide seamless and secure handovers between different access technologies in an IMS-based environment.
- Alternative heavy tailed models in seismologyPublication . Felgueiras, Miguel; Martins, João; Santos, RuiGreat earthquakes are commonly considered as the ones with moment magnitude (Mw ) above or equal to 8.0. Since these earthquakes can destroy entire communities located near the epicentre, the search of physical laws that explain the energy released by them is an important issue. There is a connection between the radiated energy of an earthquake, its magnitude and its seismic moment (M 0). Thence, when fitting a heavy or an extremely heavy tailed distribution to a seismic moment dataset, we are in fact adjusting a mathematical model which explains the amount of energy released by these great seisms. Therefore, the main goal of this work is to study the more appropriated Pareto based models (the most used family in this field) when explaining the seismic moment of the great earthquakes. With this purpose in mind, we selected two different catalogs that accommodate recent events and are considered more accurate than other catalogs used in previous works. We conclude that the traditional Pareto distribution remains a good choice to deal with this kind of data, but Log-Pareto lead to higher p-values and Location-scale Pareto is better fitted to the biggest events.

- Estimation of prevalence in rare disease using pooled samplesPublication . Martins, J. P.; Santos, R.; Felgueiras, M.The use of pooled samples for screening infected individuals is a known procedure to reduce costs. In an estimation problem, the aim is only to determine how many individuals are infected instead of determining who is infected (classification problem). In that setting, our goal was to compare the performance of using one or two-dimensional arrays. The best performance was established according to one of the following criteria: minimizing the number of individuals or the number of tests required to attain a certain estimate accuracy. It is observed that when we want to minimize the number of individuals used, the two-dimensional procedures have a little advantage over the one-dimensional procedures. However, when the major concern is the cost, the one-dimensional procedures clearly outperform the two-dimensional procedures.
- Evolution of Artificial Terrains for Video Games Based on AccessibilityPublication . Frade, Miguel; Vega, Francisco Fernandez de; Cotta, CarlosDiverse methods have been developed to generate terrains under constraints to control terrain features, but most of them use strict restrictions. However, there are situations were more flexible restrictions are sufficient, such as ensuring that terrains have enough accessible area, which is an important trait for video games. The Genetic Terrain Program technique, based on genetic programming, was used to automatically evolve Terrain Programs (TPs - which are able to generate terrains procedurally) for the desired accessibility parameters. Results showed that the accessibility parameters have negligible influence on the evolutionary system and that the terminal set has a major role on the terrain look. TPs produced this way are already being used on Chapas video game.
- Evolutionary algorithms and automatic transcription of musicPublication . Reis, Gustavo; Fernandéz, Francisco; Ferreira, AníbalThe main problem behind Automatic Transcription (Multiple Fundamental Frequency - F0 - Estimation) relies on its complexity. Harmonic collision and partial overlapping create a frequency lattice that is almost impossible to deconstruct. Although traditional approaches to this problem of rely mainly in Digital Signal Processing (DSP) techniques, evolutionary algorithms have been applied recently to this problem and achieved competitive results. We describe all evolutionary approaches to the problem of automatic music transcription and how some were improved so they could achieve competitive results. Finally, we show how the best evolutionary approach performs on piano transcription, when compared with the state-of-the-art.
- Evolutionary Multi-objective Scheduling for Anti-Spam Filtering Throughput OptimizationPublication . Ruano-Ordás, David; Basto-Fernandes, Vitor; Yevseyeva, Iryna; Méndez, José RamónThis paper presents an evolutionary multi-objective optimization problem formulation for the anti-spam filtering problem, addressing both the classification quality criteria (False Positive and False Negative error rates) and email messages classification time (minimization). This approach is compared to single objective problem formulations found in the literature, and its advantages for decision support and flexible/adaptive anti-spam filtering configuration is demonstrated. A study is performed using the Wirebrush4SPAM framework anti-spam filtering and the SpamAssassin email dataset. The NSGA-II evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithm was applied for the purpose of validating and demonstrating the adoption of this novel approach to the anti-spam filtering optimization problem, formulated from the multi-objective optimization perspective. The results obtained from the experiments demonstrated that this optimization strategy allows the decision maker (anti-spam filtering system administrator) to select among a set of optimal and flexible filter configuration alternatives with respect to classification quality and classification efficiency.
- Fighting Elders’ Social and Technological Exclusion: The TV Based ApproachPublication . Correia, Luís; Costa, Nuno; Pereira, AntónioWe are assisting to the fastest grow of senior population ever and that tendency has brought several challenges for governments, families and for the elderly. The society was not prepared for that. On the one hand, there are many elderly who live alone in the cities and, on the other hand, active people is moving to the cities looking for a better life while leaving behind the villages where they born and grow and the older family members. On the other side, everyone is expecting the aid of technology in order to solve or at least minimize this problem. This paper present a video-calling service targeted for elderly social and technological exclusion and promoting socialization while using recent technology embedded into well-known electronic devices like TVs. The evaluation of results showed that when assisted technology is encapsulated into everyday objects, older people can use it seamlessly, without any learning curve.
- Filtering Email Addresses, Credit Card Numbers and Searching for Bitcoin Artifacts with the Autopsy Digital Forensics SoftwarePublication . Domingues, Patricio; Frade, Miguel; Parreira, João MotaEmail addresses and credit card numbers found on digital forensic images are frequently an important asset in a forensic casework. However, the automatic harvesting of these data often yields many false positives. This paper presents the Forensic Enhanced Analysis (FEA) module for the Autopsy digital forensic software. FEA aims to eliminate false positives of email addresses and credit card numbers harvested by Autopsy, thus reducing the workload of the forensic examiner. FEA also harvests potential Bitcoin public addresses and private keys and validates them by looking into Bitcoin’s blockchain for the transactions linked to public addresses. FEA explores the report functionality of Autopsy and allows exports in CSV, HTML and XLS formats. Experimental results over four digital forensic images show that FEA eliminates as many as of email addresses and of credit card numbers.
- Hybrid Honey Bees Mating Optimisation algorithm to assign terminals to concentratorsPublication . Bernardino, Eugénia M.; Bernardino, Anabela M.; Sánchez-Pérez, Juan Manuel; Gómez-Pulido, Juan Antonio; Vega-Rodríguez, Miguel AngelIn this paper we propose a new approach to assign terminals to concentrators using a Hybrid Honey Bees Mating Optimisation algorithm. Honey Bees Mating Optimisation (HBMO) algorithm is a swarm-based optimisation algorithm, which simulates the mating process of real honey bees. We apply a hybridisation of HBMO to solve a combinatorial optimisation problem known as Terminal Assignment Problem (TAP). The purpose is to connect a given set of terminals to a given set of concentrators and minimise the link cost to form a communication network. The feasibility of Hybrid HBMO is demonstrated and compared with the solutions obtained by other algorithms from literature over different TAP instances.
