- A Software-Defined Radio for Future Wireless Communication Systems at 60 GHzPublication . Gomes, Rodolfo; Duarte, Luis; Ribeiro, Carlos; Caldeirinha, RafaelThis paper reports on a complete end-to-end 5G mmWave testbed fully reconfigurable based on a FPGA architecture. The proposed system is composed of a baseband/low-IF processing unit, and a mmWave RF front-end at both TX/RX ends. In particular, the baseband unit design is based on a typical agile digital IF architecture, enabling on-the-fly modulations up to 256-QAM. The real-time 5G mmWave testbed, herein presented, adopts OFDM as the transmission scheme waveform, which was assessed OTA by considering the key performance indicators, namely EVM and BER. A detailed overview of system architecture is addressed together with the hardware considerations taken into account for the mmWave testbed development. Following this, it is demonstrated that the proposed testbed enables real-time multi-stream transmissions of UHD video content captured by nine individual cameras, which is in fact one of the killing applications for 5G.
- Accessible Options for Deaf People in e-Learning Platforms: Technology Solutions for Sign Language TranslationPublication . Martins, Paulo; Henrique Rodrigues; Rocha, Tânia; Francisco, Manuela; Morgado, LeonelThis paper presents a study on potential technology solutions for enhancing the communication process for deaf people on e-learning platforms through translation of Sign Language (SL). Considering SL in its global scope as a spatial-visual language not limited to gestures or hand/forearm movement, but also to other non-dexterity markers such as facial expressions, it is necessary to ascertain whether the existing technology solutions can be effective options for the SL integration on e-learning platforms. Thus, we aim to present a list of potential technology options for the recognition, translation and presentation of SL (and potential problems) through the analysis of assistive technologies, methods and techniques, and ultimately to contribute for the development of the state of the art and ensure digital inclusion of the deaf people in e-learning platforms. The analysis show that some interesting technology solutions are under research and development to be available for digital platforms in general, but yet some critical challenges must solved and an effective integration of these technologies in e-learning platforms in particular is still missing.
- Augmented Reality and 3D Technologies: Mapping Case Studies in EducationPublication . Cardoso, Teresa; Coimbra, Teresa; Mateus, ArturLearning anywhere, anytime is becoming ever more a daily routine, due to the increasing and recent growth of information and communication technologies. In the last 5 years, their key characteristic and specifically in the use of mobile equipment and software have been their portability, mobility, and network access. The technological development, including software applications available for the implementation of three-dimensional contents, has been following this trend. Hence, it is important to know whether and how these threedimensional contents are being integrated in educational situations, namely, regarding augmented reality and mobile learning. Thus, a synthesis of Portuguese and international research works and case studies on the use of threedimensional augmented reality is chronologically presented along with the evolution of information and communication technologies. The main goal of this knowledge mapping is to contribute to the state of the art in threedimensional augmented reality technologies in education. In addition, it is aimed at framing the creation and implementation of three-dimensional content in higher education, specifically in the field of mathematics. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2015.
- Augmented Reality: An Enhancer for Higher Education Students in Math's Learning?Publication . Coimbra, MMath. Teresa; Cardoso, Teresa; Mateus, ArturIn this text, we intend to answer to the following question: is Augmented Reality an enhancer for Higher Education students in math's learning? For this purpose, we define augmented reality and present a state of the art mapped mainly by studies that focus AR in educational contexts. We also describe our research, including methodological aspects in data collection and the creation of 3D contents in AR. Then, we synthesize the analysis of some preliminary data, briefly presenting perceptions and practices of students in math's learning with AR contents. Finally, we conclude that the challenges that are nowadays put to teaching methods, acquisition and subsequent knowledge consolidation may be met, to some extent, by the application of available technologies. These, in turn, should enhance a more complete understanding of contents, leading to knowledge endogenization and also to the internalization of more sustained competencies. Among those technologies, we highlight augmented reality since it can encourage motivation, comprehension and a higher involvement with the contents to be learned. Thus, it may increase the use of information and the access to knowledge, improving digital and info-inclusion.
- Blind Guide: An Ultrasound Sensor-based Body Area Network for Guiding Blind PeoplePublication . Pereira, António; Nunes, Nelson; Vieira, Daniel; Costa, Nuno; Fernandes, Hugo; Barroso, JoãoWireless Sensor Networks, in particular Wireless Body Area Networks, is a technology suggested by the research community as allowing elderly people, or people with some kind of disability, to live in a safer, responsive and comfortable environment while at their homes. One of the most active threats to the autonomous life of blind people is the quantity and variety of obstacles they face while moving, whether they are obstacles in the footpath or obstacles coming out from the walls of buildings. Hence, it is necessary to develop a solution that helps or assists blind people while moving either in indoor or outdoor scenarios, simultaneously allowing the use of the use of white cane or the Seeing Eye dog. In this article, the authors propose the use of an ultra-sound based body area network for obstacle detection and warning as a complementary and effective solution for aiding blind people when moving from place to place. According to the cost estimates of the solution and to the negligible setup time, this could be a real effective complementary solution for blind people.
- Children's reading aloud performance: a database and automatic detection of disfluenciesPublication . Proença, Jorge; Celorico, Dirce; Candeias, Sara; Lopes, Carla; Perdigão, FernandoThe automatic evaluation of children's reading performance by detecting and analyzing errors and disfluencies in speech is an important tool to build automatic reading tutors and to complement the current method of manual evaluations of overall reading ability in schools. A large amount of speech from children reading aloud plentiful in errors and disfluencies is needed to train acoustic, disfluency and pronunciation models for an automatic reading assessment system. This paper describes the acquisition and analysis of a read-aloud speech database of European Portuguese from children aged 6-10 from the first to fourth school grades. Towards the goal of detecting all reading errors and disfluencies, we apply a decoding process to the utterances using flexible word level lattices that allow syllable based false starts and repetitions of two or more word sequences. The proposed method proved promising in detecting corrections and repetitions in sentences, and provides an improved alignment of the data, helpful for future annotation tasks. The analysis of the database also shows agreement to government defined curricular goals for reading.
- Digital Technologies adopted by universities to support entrepreneurial students spin-offsPublication . Figueiredo, Ronnie; Dias, Álvaro Lopes; Sousa, Maria JoséThis paper presents a theoretical approach based on the systematic literature review (SLR) method. The objective of the study was identifying the digital technologies adopted by universities to support entrepreneurial students’ spin-offs. We identified 98 studies in the first round of Scopus database, in the period from 2004 to 2022, and conclude the analysis with 42 papers, after others rounds. Data collection was performed through the Boolean technique, using the keywords ‘digital innovation’ and ‘university’. The results point to several technologies, in special MOOCs and mobiles application. The study contributes significantly to future research in the field of entrepreneurial universities, which encourage the generation of digital businesses, from the development of spin offs working to the entrepreneurial students.
- Disruptive Future of Radar Based on All-Digital PN Signal ProcessingPublication . Ribeiro, Carlos; Ferreira Gil, João; Caldeirinha, Rafael; Reis, Joao R.; Sardo, Andre; Duarte, Luis; Leonor, NunoThis paper presents the first results on the design and implementation of a real-time and high resolution monostatic radar at 24 GHz, based on the sliding correlation of pseudonoise (PN) sequences. The real-time radar, with a high time resolution better than 4ns, is used for moving target identification (MTI) in the presence of highly dense clutter, under harsh environments and severe weather conditions (fog, snow and fire smoke or plume). A radar signal processing based on alldigital PN sequences is proposed, which represents a quantum leap in radar future front-end architecture. Results obtained in a controlled environment, inside an anechoic chamber, are presented and a benchmark with a commercially-of-the-shelf solution is presented. © 2019 IEEE.
- Effect of Preventive Exercise Programs for Swimmer’s Shoulder Injury on Rotator Cuff Torque and Balance in Competitive Swimmers: A Randomized Controlled TrialPublication . Tavares, Nuno; Vilas-Boas, João Paulo; Castro, Maria AntónioBackground: Over the season, competitive swimmers experience a progressive imbalance in rotator cuff strength, predisposing them to a significant risk factor for a swimmer’s shoulder injury. Objectives: Verify the effectiveness of two 12-week preventive programs on the shoulder rotators’ peak torque and conventional/functional ratios. Design: A care provider- and participant-blinded, parallel, randomized controlled trial with three groups. Participants: Competitive swimmers aged 16 to 35 years with no prior clinical issues related to their shoulders. Interventions: Twice a week, over 12 weeks, the two experimental groups performed five exercises where the only difference was executing the program with weights or elastic bands, and the control group performed a sham intervention. Main outcome measures: The concentric and eccentric peak torque of the internal and external rotators of the dominant shoulder were assessed before and after the intervention using an isokinetic dynamometer Biodex System 3, at 60°/s, 120°/s, and 180°/s. Results: Among the experimental groups, only one test indicated a reduction (p ≤ 0.05) in rotator peak torque, while the control group showed a decrease (p ≤ 0.05) in five tests. Swimmers who completed the prevention programs demonstrated less imbalance in conventional/functional ratios than controls. Conclusions: Implementing a 12-week preventive program minimizes the progressive shoulder rotational imbalance over the season in competitive swimmers. - Effectiveness of Wearable Devices for Posture Correction: A Systematic Review of Evidence from Randomized and Quasi-Experimental StudiesPublication . Caixeiro, Diogo; Cordeiro, Tomás; Constantino, Leandro; Carreira, João; Mendes, Rui; Silva, Cândida G.; Castro, Maria AntónioIntroduction: The increasing development of wearable devices for postural monitoring (provide feedback on posture) or correction (mechanical or biofeedback to promote change) is partly driven by the rising prevalence of poor posture in the general population and its impact on pain perception and functional capacity. Objective: Examine the effects of wearable devices on posture correction or prevention and on related outcomes, including postural alignment, muscle activity, pain and functional performance. Methods: The review followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Searches were performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and PEDro for studies published between 2012 and 2025. Eligible studies included randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental designs involving participants with postural deviations or at risk of developing them, who underwent interventions using wearable devices that provided vibratory, auditory, visual, or tactile biofeedback. Results: Eight studies reported immediate improvements in postural alignment, body awareness, and self-reported pain, particularly with devices providing vibratory or visual biofeedback. Functional task stability improved, and muscle activity during risky postures decreased. However, the strong heterogeneity across devices and protocols, small sample sizes, short intervention durations, and, in some cases, the lack of independent control groups limit the strength and generalizability of these findings. Conclusions: Wearable devices have potential as complementary tools in physiotherapy due to their autonomous and potentially effective nature. Nevertheless, current evidence remains insufficient to support definitive clinical recommendations.
