- Modelling integrated multi-trophic aquaculture: Optimizing a three trophic level systemPublication . Granada, Luana; Lopes, Sofia; Novais, Sara C.; Lemos, Marco F. L.As a fast-growing food production industry, aquaculture is dealing with the need for intensification due to the global increasing demand for fish products. However, this also implies the use of more sustainable practices to reduce negative environmental impacts currently associated with this industry, including the use of wild resources, destruction of natural ecosystems, eutrophication of effluent receiving bodies, impacts due to inadequate medication practices, among others. Using multi-species systems, such as integrated multi-trophic aquaculture, allows to produce economically important species while reducing some of these aquaculture concerns, through biomitigation of aquaculture wastes and reduction of diseases outbreaks, for example. Applying mathematical models to these systems is crucial to control and understand the interactions between species, maximizing productivity, with important environmental and economic benefits. Here, the application of some equations and models available in the literature, regarding basic parameters, is discussed – population dynamics, growth, waste production, and filtering rate – when considering the description and optimization of a theoretical integrated multi-trophic aquaculture operation composed by three trophic levels.
- Trefftz methods with cracklets and their relation to BEM and MFSPublication . Alves, Carlos J.S.; Martins, Nuno F.M.; Valtchev, Svilen S.In this paper we consider Trefftz methods which are based on functions defined by single layer or double layer potentials, integrals of the fundamental solution, or their normal derivative, on cracks. These functions are called cracklets, and satisfy the partial differential equation, as long as the crack support is not placed inside the domain. A boundary element method (BEM) interpretation is to consider these cracks as elements of the original boundary, in a direct BEM approach, or elements of an artificial boundary, in an indirect BEM approach. In this paper we consider the cracklets just as basis functions in Trefftz methods, as the method of fundamental solutions (MFS). We focus on the 2D Laplace equation, and establish some comparisons and connections between these methods with cracklets and standard approaches like the BEM, indirect BEM, and the MFS. Namely, we propose the enrichment of the MFS basis with the cracklets. Several numerical simulations are presented to test the performance of the methods, in particular comparing the results with the MFS and the BEM.

- Silhouette Enhancement in Light Field Disparity Estimation Using the Structure TensorPublication . Lourenço, Rui; Assunção, Pedro; Távora, Luís M.N.; Fonseca-Pinto, Rui; Faria, SergioThis paper presents a method to improve disparity maps computed from light field images using structure tensor methods, which tend to expand the borders of the occluding objects, enlarging their silhouette. The proposed method relies on the fact that such regions of the silhouette are defined by a mismatch between the disparity map edges, computed by the structure tensor, and those of the corresponding epipolar plane images (EPI) representing the light field. The proposed silhouette improvement method determines a correspondence between EPI edges and the disparity map edges, identifying the erroneous silhouette regions. The disparity map is corrected by using neighbouring values computed with high structure tensor reliability. The achieved results show that the disparity map is improved both around object edges and overall, reducing the MSE by 47.9% in comparison with other methods also based on the structure tensor.
- I am with you: a netnographic analysis of the Instagram opinion leaders on eating behavior changePublication . Saboia, Inga; Almeida, Ana Margarida Pisco; Lopes de Sousa, Pedro Miguel; Pernencar, CláudiaCurrently we are strongly influenced by the changes provided by Web 2.0. The number of users consuming and sharing online information about health and wellbeing is increasing. This is a new scenario and a fertile field to study, in which social networks and eHealth applications are powerful tools to support behavior change. This article explores the influence processes of online opinion leaders, such as health professionals and non-professional, on the food behavioral change of their followers on online social networks. We use a netnography observation method following user profiles on Instagram. Some groups and its characteristics and practices were identified. This paper focuses only on three opinion leaders categories: nutritionists, POLs and healthy lifestyle in Portugal and Brazil. Results show different opinion leaders acting as partners, but with different characteristics and practices.
- PontesPublication . Baptista, Mariana de Sousa Calaça Pereira; Albuquerque, Luísa Arroz CorreiaThe present thesis analyzes the Municipalities of Óbidos and Caldas da Rainha in their tourist, cultural and artistic complementarity in order to structure the work base of a project called "Pontes", name inspired by the original "Pontis" by Michael Pinsky in Halsend, Together, it prepares the analysis for the proposal in the Region of a narrative based on the common history of Óbidos with the city of Caldas da Rainha, from which it originates and whose approximation by the word, allows us to understand the same historical matrix that when uniting the two Municipalities creates a bridge that facilitates their urban, artistic and cultural understanding. The thesis analyzes the territory and the project proposes a concrete action that uses as base the study of the associations and human patrimony (software) and the infrastructures and their patrimonial value (hardware).
- Blockchain: A Tale of Two ApplicationsPublication . Ferreira, Micael; Rodrigues, Sven; Reis, Catarina I.; Maximiano, MarisaBitcoin continues to get more and more attention from the media, mainly because of the volatility of its value and insignificantly associated with the technological innovation. This cryptocurrency is supported by an immutable database and is distributed throughout a network of thousands of nodes, known as Blockchain. One way to ensure that all the concepts behind the Blockchain technology and infrastructure are seized is to conduct the development of one of the most popular context applications for it: a wallet for well-known cryptocurrencies. Yet Another Bitcoin Wallet (YABW) is a hybrid application available for both Android and iOS, which was developed with the Ionic and Angular frameworks. This application communicates with Bitcoin Blockchain to send, receive and store bitcoins; provides a set of features focused on security and user experience, and is available on the Play Store and Apple Store. A rather relevant issue that is becoming a major subject of current research is the application of the Blockchain infrastructure to other contexts that are neither directly connected to cryptocurrencies, nor are finance related. The implementation of a proof-of-concept application proposes the use of a blockchain for a specific case study: the exchange of meal vouchers of an institution amongst students. This is achieved using the decentralized platform Ethereum, which allows us to create a Smart Contract using the Solidity programming language to create a token that follows the Ethereum Request for Comment (ERC), the ERC-20 standard and represents the meal vouchers. This second application uses the architecture defined for YABW, reusing major components and custom developing specific modules to enhance the required features. There is still a lot of research to be done on the non-financial applicability of the Blockchain infrastructure and technology, but for the moment, we have left further evidence that it is possible and is a relative straight-forward process to accomplish from the technological perspective.
