- Fotopolimerização de hidrogéis de ácido hialurónicoPublication . Duarte, Stacy; Pereira, Rúben; Campos, Carlos; Vaz, Daniela C.; Paulo Flores et al.O ácido hialurónico (HA) é um polissacarídeo amplamente presente no organismo humano e constitui um material com potencial para ser incorporado em hidrogéis direcionados para aplicações biomédicas. No entanto, as fracas propriedades mecânicas, rápida degradação e libertação in vivo do HA não reticulado solúvel limita muitas aplicações clínicas diretas. Deste modo, com vista melhorar as suas caraterísticas materiais procedemos à modificação química do HA com anidrido metacrílico (MA), com formação de ácido hialurónico metacrilado (MeHA), com propriedades fotopolimerizáveis, combinado ainda na presença e ausência de agente gelificante extra, tal como o polissacarídeo natural iota-carragenina. O HA utilizado foi caracterizado através de espectroscopia de ressonância magnética nuclear (RMN) e de dicroísmo circular (CD). Os hidrogéis produzidos foram analisados via testes de absorção de água e de degradação em meio aquoso, bem como através de análise mecânica dinâmica (DMA) à compressão. O estudo conduzido permitiu verificar que, enquanto os biofilmes de HA se mostraram quebradiços e com fracas propriedades mecânicas, o MeHA não só foi capaz de formar hidrogéis, por fotopolimerização, como a adição do iota-carragenina à formulação, possibilitou a formação de IPNs (Interpenetrating Polymer Networks) e de semi-IPNs com melhores propriedades físicas e mecânicas.
- Radio frequency and microwave numerical simulation techniques based on multivariate formulationsPublication . Oliveira, Jorge F.Simulating modern wireless communication systems is today a hot topic. Serious difficul ties arise when these systems are highly nonlinear heterogeneous circuits, combining radio frequency (RF) and baseband analog circuitry and digital components, operating in widely distinct time scales. This paper briefly reviews some recently proposed innovative tech niques based on multivariate (multidimensional) formulations, which were especially con ceived to efficiently simulate modern wireless systems, as a whole, at the circuit level. In order to evidence the achievements brought by the multivariate strategies into the field of RF and microwave circuit simulation, as well as their most relevant limitations, sev eral powerful numerical techniques, operating in time, frequency, or hybrid (combination) domains, will be addressed.
- Modeling and inferring the attenuation induced by vegetation barriers at 2G/3G/4G cellular bands using Artificial Neural NetworksPublication . Gómez-Pérez, Paula; Crego-García, Marcos; Cuiñas, Iñigo; Caldeirinha, Rafael F. S.Modeling vegetation is a recurrent problem for wireless communications industry. The raising number of available frequency bands increases this issue, since most of the existing methods nowadays rely on measurement campaigns. The presence of vegetation in urban areas (such as parks or gardens) is bothersome for radio planners, which have to deal with an in-excess attenuation difficult to predict due to the large number of different cases (i.e. vegetation species, topologies of vegetation volumes, frequencies. . .). Usually, these vegetation formations appear in the form of forests or barriers, emphasizing the problem, since their impact in the transmitted power is not negligible. This paper proposes the use of Artificial Neural Networks as powerful tools to model and infer the excess attenuation induced by vegetation formations. The study is held at cellular frequency bands (2G/3G/4G) for different vegetation species and barrier configurations, where a multilayer perceptron has been trained over existing experimental data at 2G/3G frequencies. We demonstrate the efficiency of the model to predict accurately the attenuation in the frequencies for which it has been trained for, and to infer and extend the model obtained to new frequencies, e.g. 4G, while maintaining an overall low median error. The proposed framework, which is sought to be a powerful tool for radio planners to predict attenuation due to a vegetation formation, has been validated against measurements conducted in controlled environments at several mobile radio frequencies, but it could be easily extended to other radio frequencies, such as WiFi, WiMax or 5G frequency bands, as long as a proper training is performed, to include different propagation effects at such bands.
- On the “Smith is Huq” Condition in S-Protomodular CategoriesPublication . Martins-Ferreira, Nelson; Montoli, AndreaWe study the so-called “Smith is Huq” condition in the context of S-protomodular categories: two S-equivalence relations centralise each other if and only if their associated normal subobjects commute. We prove that this condition is satisfied by every category of monoids with operations equipped with the class S of Schreier split epimorphisms. Some consequences in terms of characterisation of internal structures are explored.
- Selecting and Optimizing a Heat Exchanger for Automotive Vehicle Rankine Cycle Waste Heat Recovery SystemsPublication . Santos, Helder; Morgado, Joel; Martinho, Nuno; Pereira, João; Moita, AnaThis paper contributes for the selection and optimization of an adequate compact heat exchanger (HEX) for an automotive vehicle Rankine cycle Waste Heat Recovery Systems (RC-WHRS). Both tube type and plate type HEX were considered. Among the different HEX designs available, a robust cross-ow tube heat exchanger (CFT-HEX), with the working fluid circulating inside the tubes was selected. The selected HEX accomplishes with the specific pressure drops limits on both exhaust gas and working fluid side. The compactness of the CFT-HEX strongly depends on the optimization of the HEX pre-heater section, which mainly depends on the augmentation of the working fluid heat transfer coefficient. The present study data reveals that a transitional flow regime with a working fluid Reynolds number, Re > 3200, allows a significant increase of the Nusselt number (Nu > 20) as compared to laminar flow regime.
- A Two-Dimensional Ray-Tracing-Based Model for Propagation Through Vegetation: A practical assessment using ornamental plants at 60 GHz. [Wireless Corner]Publication . S.; Garcia Sanchez, Manuel Garcia; Fernandes, Telmo R.This article aims to practically assess the point scatterer formulation to characterize the electromagnetic behavior of ornamental plants with varying thickness at 60 GHz. The proposed propagation model uses various point scatterers with specific radiation characteristics, distributed within a computational area, to describe the effect of the plants present in the radiowave propagation path. Additionally, a ray-tracing-based engine is used to gather all the interactions between the point scatterers present in the simulation channel. The performance of the proposed modeling approach is assessed against reradiation measurements of single and isolated plants, performed in the 60-GHz frequency band, inside an anechoic chamber. Additional model validation is obtained from reradiation measurements of several clumps of plants, mimicking specimens with varying thickness.
- Gaussian Scale MixturesPublication . Felgueiras, Miguel Martins; Martins, João Paulo; Santos, Rui Filipe; European Society of Computational Methods in Sciences and Engineering (ESCMSE)In this paper we present a parsimonious approximation of a Gaussian mixture when its components share a common mean value, i.e. a scale mixture. We show that a shifted and scaled Student’s t -distribution can be approximated to this type of mixture, and use the result to develop a hypothesis test for the equality of the components mean value. A simulation study to check the quality of the approximation is also provided, together with an application to logarithmic daily returns.

Nobre, CristinaDebruçar-me-ei sobre o texto de Afonso Lopes Vieira, intitulado por mim As Três Glórias de Leiria [GL] , que faz parte do seu espólio manuscrito e corresponde, seguramente, a uma conferência. Nela assistimos à rotação do escritor da portugalidade para o regionalismo, a "piquena pátria dentro da Pátria grande" [GL: 33 / Nobre, 2005, II: 681]. Lopes Vieira vai enaltecer as três glórias de Leiria — o castelo, o poeta Francisco Rodrigues Lobo e o herói Mouzinho de Albuquerque — a coberto de um programa de comemorações da cidade a que assiste o próprio Bispo de Leiria. Com todas as probabilidades, tratou-se das "Festas do Duplo Centenário e Exposição Distrital de Leiria de 1940", festejos nos quais é convidado a participar ativamente (e a ajudar na decoração do recheio e legendas) pelo principal organizador, Horácio Eliseu.

Nobre, CristinaA comunicação Leituras de Camilo Pessanha por estudantes chineses parte das interpretações de poemas de Pessanha feitas por alunos dos cursos de Tradução e Interpretação Português-Chinês – Chinês-Português, Língua Portuguesa Aplicada e Língua e Cultura Portuguesas, da ESECS do IPL, durante os anos letivos de 2014-15 e 2015-16, para chegar a algumas caraterísticas culturais orientais da poesia de Clepsidra. Os poemas selecionados pelos estudantes foram: Viola chinesa; Branco e Vermelho; Ao longe os barcos de flores; Imagens que passais pela retina; San Gabriel I; Rosa de Inverno. A comunicação toma-os como corpus de trabalho e procura partir deles para as reflexões conclusivas.
- Todos diferentes, todos iguais!Publication . Nobre, CristinaOs estudantes da UC de Literatura para a Infância criaram um texto a tentar caminhar para o literário, apenas através da imersão num contexto rico de outros textos e de um repositório elencado aos autores mais canónicos. ‘Todos diferentes, todos iguais!’ faz uso da linguagem quotidiana e das ilustrações, para nos mostrar como nem sempre a dificuldade de inserção tem a ver com o que pensamos. O texto foi já abordado por diferentes meninos e meninas, em situações de prática pedagógica, que usufruíram das potencialidades do livro, pondo à prova a conceção do objeto pela reação do público-alvo. Ainda que a igualdade não seja total, ela também não é uma necessidade frontal e vital. Com uma menina bastante diferente de todas as outras pela cor (Luana é angolana, e negra), atinge-se o público da lusofonia e oferece-se-lhe um motor de justificação nas suas aspirações a uma inclusão bem sucedida.
