- Characterisation of Portuguese RC Precast Industrial Building StockPublication . Rodrigues, H.; Sousa, R.; Vitorino, H.; Batalha, N.; Varum, H.; Fernandes, P.; Liu, ZaobaoThe construction of a vulnerability model requires reliable information on the features of the buildings in the study. The purpose of this work is the characterisation of the precast industrial buildings in Portuguese industrial park, based on the survey of 73 design projects of existing buildings. The collected data are based on a previous study on the features that influence the seismic response of this type of buildings. The parameters collected are associated with the global geometry and specific elements characteristics (e.g., column dimensions, reinforcement ratios, and connections details), to the mechanical properties of the materials and other parameters that can give some important information in the characterisation of the buildings (e.g., construction year and localization). In the end, a comparison with other available databases, namely, from Italy and Turkey, is done in order to conclude about the similarity. This information is important to define representative experimental specimens and numerical simulation to conduce seismic risk analysis.
- Development of a Web Application for Historical Building Management through BIM TechnologyPublication . Rodrigues, F.; Teixeira, J.; Matos, R.; Rodrigues, H.Nowadays the built heritage has been recognized as one of the main sectors that can support the economic and sustainable development of countries. In the last years, the built heritage has been subject to several levels of interventions, being now clear its need for a proper maintenance and conservation management. However, in several cases, the maintenance faces lack of building records, which makes the maintenance a harsh, long, and expensive process. Therefore, there is an opportunity and need to apply new technologies, like Building Information Modelling (BIM), as supporting tool to the management of historical heritage. By so, the aim of this work was the development of a management system to be used as a supporting tool to the maintenance and conservation of the existent buildings, in historical context, facilitating to the interested parties the automated and digitized information needed to carry out the most varied tasks, with the particularity to be directly connected to the 3D-BIM model of the building. But in order to test the developed system (its applicability and functionality), it was in an early phase, applied to a pilot project with the significant heritage value. This work follows a development methodology applied to the case study and had different phases: (1) the case study was modelled in Autodesk Revit software, in whose model was inserted all the parametric information and associated metadata; (2) then, a support database of the management system was developed in Microsoft SQL Server, which will support all the information exported from the BIM model; (3) a web application was developed in C# through Visual Studio 2015, which works through and application programming interface (API) allowing the communication between the web application and the BIM model, allowing not only the interaction with the parametric information of this one, but also, a persistent access to a data management system (drawings, inspection reports, specifications, etc.) that has been created. The development of the management system and its application to the case study allows us to show its potential as a tool for the historical heritage management, contributing to its permanent and constantly updated management and cross off the fragmentation and loss of information therefore reducing the consequent investment in data collection.
- Efficiency of different retrofitting technichs for RC columns under biaxial loading: Experimental studyPublication . Rodrigues, H.; Furtado, A.; Rocha, P.; Arêde, A.The main purposes of this work it to present an experimental campaign of different strengthening strategies of RC columns, and evaluating benefits concerning their structural behaviour cyclic loading. 9 RC columns were tested, two of them original and the rest composed by strengthened columns by CFRP and steel plates jacketing. The aim is, therefore, to contribute for developing and calibration a procedure that enables the evaluation of the efficiency of the strengthening strategies, their possibilities and application. It was also an objective of this work to explore the possibility of use this techniques on the improvement of existing buildings performance.
- Seismic behaviour analysis and retrofitting of a row buildingPublication . Barros, R.S.; Costa, A.; Varum, H.; Rodrigues, H.; Lourenço, P.B.; Vasconcelos, G.Rammed earth is one of the oldest building materials in the world, and it is present in Portugal with a particular focus in the South of the country. The mechanical properties and the structural behaviour of rammed earth constructions have been the subject of study of many researchers in the recent years. This study is part of a broader research on vernacular seismic culture in Portugal. Numerical analyses were carried out to assess the influence of different retrofitting solutions in the behaviour and seismic performance of a rammed earth building, representative of the vernacular heritage of Alentejo region. Understating the structural fragilities of this type of constructions allowed determining the most appropriate retrofitting solutions.
- Seismic fragility functions for Portuguese RC precast buildingsPublication . Sousa, R.; Batalha, N.; Silva, V.; Rodrigues, H.Fragility functions are fundamental for the assessment of seismic safety of structures or the loss assessment of a portfolio of assets. The present paper describes a procedure to derive fragility functions representative of Portuguese reinforced concrete precast buildings. This goal was achieved following an analytical methodology considering the result of hundreds of nonlinear static analyses, whose building models reflect both mechanical and geometrical characteristics of the Portuguese industrial building stock. Considering the specificities of this typology, and in particular the connections between the structural members, a recently developed macro-element was employed, which enables the explicit simulation of friction and dowel mechanisms. The fragility analyses considered both structural and non-structural limit states, and the findings indicate a poor seismic performance, even under low seismic demand.
- Seismic vulnerability of vernacular buildings in urban centres-the case of vila real de santo antónioPublication . Vasconcelos, G.; Lourenço, P.B.; Rodrigues, H.; Varum, H.Following detailed studies of Portuguese vernacular building typologies, this paper deals with buildings located in historical urban centres. An analysis of the history of the urban centre and, in particular, of some vernacular buildings is enhanced. Additionally, a discussion on the influence of changes of the geometry, and on added built volumes to original buildings in the seismic vulnerability of the buildings is also provided.
- Structural conservation and vernacular constructionPublication . Lourenço, P.B.; Varum, H.; Vasconcelos, G.; Rodrigues, H.Modern societies understand built cultural heritage, including vernacular construction, as a landmark of culture and diversity, which needs to be protected and brought to the next generations in suitable condition. Still, a large part of this heritage is affected by structural problems that menace the safety of buildings and people. In the case of vernacular construction, deterioration due to abandonment is often present, making the phenomena of urbanization one of the most important menaces to this built heritage. The developments in the areas of inspection, non-destructive testing, monitoring and structural analysis of historical constructions, together with recent guidelines for reuse and conservation, allow for safer, economical and adequate remedial measures, as discussed in this paper.
