- A bibliometric study of John Dunning’s contribution to international business researchPublication . Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Pinto, Cláudia Sofia Frias; Serra, Fernando Antonio Ribeiro; Santos, João CarvalhoThis article offers a review of John Dunning’s contribution to international business (IB) research, so as to assess the impact of Dunning and of the Eclectic paradigm on this discipline. The contribution of Dunning and of the Eclectic paradigm – usually referred to as OLI – are a core reference to current international business research, namely for studying location decisions, foreign investment, entry modes and internationalization, and for the multinational enterprise theory. First, we review the conceptual foundations of Dunning’s academic contribution. Second, methodologically, we carry out a bibliometric study of articles published in 14 respected academic business magazines over a period of 31 years, between 1980 and 2010. A sample of 697 published articles that refer to Dunning’s work supports the analysis of citations and co-citations matrixes and of relevant themes, allowing us to verify the influence of Dunning’s work on the international business and Management disciplines. This study allowed us to identify the network of connections between Dunning’s Eclectic paradigm and a variety of international business theories, concepts and authors, as well as with the main subjects studied in the discipline. We observed the connections to the transaction costs theory, resource-based view, industrial organization and evolutionary theory. This study also contributes to scholars’ better understanding of the development of the discipline and of the structure of knowledge within connections between theories and authors. Through their contributions, scholars such as John Dunning leave their imprint on the way in which disciplines and knowledge evolve. Dunning’s work, in the Eclectic paradigm, systematized three conditions that guide the internationalization of companies – and is now a reference for entrepreneurial activities, scholars and research.
- Culture and Hofstede (1980) in international business studies: a bibliometric study in top management journalsPublication . Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Serra, Fernando Antonio Ribeiro; Pinto, Cláudia Sofia FriasHow countries differ in their fundamental cultural traits and how these differences impact firms and businesses has been a recurring topic in international business research. Geert Hofstede’s (1980) work on culture and the cultural dimensions has had high impact on research carried out in international business studies and has been used in a wider array of business/management disciplines to delve into a large variety of phenomena. In this study, we conduct a bibliometric analysis of the articles published in eight top ranked business journals that quoted Hofstede’s work, over a period of thirty years. Hofstede’s work is used as a key marker for culture. In a sample of 655 articles, we conducted citation and co-citation analyses to better understand the ties binding scholars, theories and ideas. Moreover, a longitudinal analysis of both cocitation and research topics allow us to observe and better understand how much does Hofstede – and culture – matter in international business studies and how research emphasis has changed over time. For instance, we noted how the emphasis of research has shifted from methodological concerns to help explaining, contextualizing why firms made the choices they did, and how operations ought to be managed. We discuss broadly the results, pointing some implications, especially for theory and scholars.
- Publishing in co-authorship: A comparison of the motivations between more and less prolific Management scholars in BrazilPublication . Ferreira, Manuel Portugal; Falaster, Christian Daniel; Pinto, Cláudia Sofia Frias; Canela, RenataIn this study, we investigate what more and less prolific scholars – that publish more or less scientific articles – search for in their co-authorship ties. Specifically, we seek to understand if and how there are differences in the motivations presiding to co-authorship between more and less prolific researchers. Research on co-authorship is of interest to the academia, since the majority of the articles are published in co-authorship and co-authorships may have an important impact in the scholars’ career. We have collected survey data with 171 Brazilian management faculty, about their motivations, pressures, and choices for co-authorship. We identify significant differences on the perceived pressures to publish, source of pressure, motivations to work in co-authorship and the contributions warranting co--authorship across more and less prolific researchers. We contribute to the debate on the development of scholars and the formation of co-authorship ties, suggesting that co-authorship may be strategically managed and evolving along the professional path of the researchers, and leaving the possibility that scholars’ networks of co-authorship evolve strategically as they seek different goals.
